File source problem with File:Note-2-backlink-a.png edit

Thank you for uploading File:Note-2-backlink-a.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 11:17, 6 September 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:17, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Notes vs drafts edit

I have left a message for the templator, in it I deprecate this particular use of {{Userspace draft}}. I also say "There might be value in finding or creating a {{Userspace notes}} template, or in Geo using a group notice on his pages, but now that is drawn to his attention, I suggest you leave it to him. "

Rgds, Rich Farmbrough, 17:24, 15 September 2010 (UTC).Reply

Template:Editnotices/Group/User:Geo Swan will appear at the top of all your user pages (and Template:Editnotices/Group/User talk:Geo Swan for your user talk pages) - that is what I meant by "a group notice". I would keep that short and succinct and link to the text you just created, for more detail something like "These user pages may contain working notes and historical material not suitable for article space, and do not purport to encyclopedic values. For more detail see..." Rich Farmbrough, 18:42, 15 September 2010 (UTC).Reply
I also created the notes template:

  • Thanks. I was not familiar with this feature. When I tried to edit that page it said I was not authorized to do so. I think I have figured out what I would like, for starters anyhow. Can you suggest what I need to do to get access to edit the page? Or, if it simpler, could you put the following in there?
You are editing rough notes, in user-space, not a wikipedia article. It has not been subjected to the same scrutiny, or written to the same standards as an actual wikipedia article. See User:Geo Swan/An introduction to the notes on subpages under User:Geo Swan for more details.
Thanks again. Geo Swan (talk) 19:06, 15 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please be careful edit

In reply to your recent message on my talk page. You carelessly uploaded an image of a person and added it to the article Calvin Gibbs. The person in the image was not Calvin Gibbs and i removed it. Please be more careful in the future and please do not blame other for your mistakes. Controversial edit? That is laughable. IQinn (talk) 23:15, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

copyright edit

Wikipedia takes copyright policy very seriously. Please take care, we do not need to have a picture in our articles, non free images in a BLP are pretty much a no no, also take care with claims of PD, pretty pictures are nice but we need strong clear free to use media or it is more trouble than it is worth, adding of files that belong to people can diminish that pictures value immensely, please take care with copyright. Off2riorob (talk) 14:51, 20 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

As I wrote on the recent discussion, I am going to assume you were in a hurry, and you failed to notice that the Washington Post explicitly credited the US Army.
I think I already take copyright seriously, thank you.
I am going to take the liberty of disagreeing with you on several points.
  1. In my opinion relevant images, add to the value of our articles. If you think you can explain why they do not, I'd be very interested in reading that explanation.
  2. WRT your assertion that fair use images in biographies "pretty much a no no" -- are you able o cite a wikidocument that backs up this view?
  3. WRT "more trouble than it is worth"? I found this portion of your note unclear.
I am going to close with a request. Could you consider avoiding the use of dismissive terms like "pretty pictures"? We are supposed to have real discussions, civil, collegial discussions, where we really consider the possibility that we are wrong, and our correspondents are correct, or are making valid points. I suggest that the use of dismissive terms like "pretty pictures" can give the unfortunate appearance that you have a closed mind, and are not really prepared to consider that one's correspondent can offer valid counter-points. Orphaned non-free image File:Calvin Gibbs, from his high school yearbook, via the Washington Post.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Calvin Gibbs, from his high school yearbook, via the Washington Post.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk 04:39, 23 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

How to challenge File:Calvin Gibbs, from his high school yearbook, via the Washington Post.jpg edit

Off2riorob cut and paste a message I left on User talk:Off2riorob about a fair use image they characterized as a copyvio, and placed my comments here.

In the interests of prevening confusion I have cut my original comments, leaving only their reply, which I have indented, as per our talk page conventions. Geo Swan (talk) 21:44, 23 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have removed it again, please don't replace it, is is a non fee image in a BLP when go getting one is totally an option. Please be aware that disputed images in BLP should better be removed while the issue is resolved. Off2riorob (talk) 21:05, 23 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia:Non free content is a good start and this is a bit more specific Wikipedia:NFC#UUI - Please be aware that commenting here and there and me not replying is a likely sign that I have not seen the post, I recommend if you want to discuss anything with me, please contact me on my talkpage to guarantee I see it, regards. Proposed deletion of Abdul Haq (Northern Alliance translator) edit

The article Abdul Haq (Northern Alliance translator) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:N and WP:BLP1E. Someone without any information about him, who is named in one document about one incident.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
