Disambiguation link notification for January 9

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited RAF Grove, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Grove (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

RAF Peterhead

Hi there Gavbadger, I've nominated RAF Peterhead for DYK at Template:Did you know nominations/RAF Peterhead. If possible could you reword the article to avoid the citation needed tag, so that the article can go on the main page? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:36, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Done I think you may need to change the DYK as it implies that Peterhead is still in use by the Royal Air Force which it isn't. Good Luck. Gavbadger (talk) 12:24, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
 • Added as an ALT, thanks. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:39, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
Funnily enough and somewhat bizarrely, I landed here to ask if you would be kind enough to have a quick look at RNAS Longside to make sure it was okay from the 'Military history' point of view as I've expanded it a bit and I have no experience or knowledge of that type of article. My idea was to possibly put it forward for a DYK as well, so any thoughts would be gratefully appreciated.
PS: I do still have more info to try to include in RNAS Longside! SagaciousPhil - Chat 13:08, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
One obvious is the naming since the title and lead says Longside yet everything else says Lenabo, so would a name change be in order? Otherwise a lot of the text would need to be changed. Otherwise it looks fine. For the DYK you could say about how It was the most northerly air ship station in Britain, but it's up to you as i never (apart from above) do anything to do with DYK. Good Luck. Gavbadger (talk) 18:07, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Brilliant - thank you so much for doing that! I've changed the text to read 'the base' or 'the site' rather than Lenabo except when referring to the land, so hopefully that now works. Old habits die hard as it's just called 'Lenabo' locally but it's surprising how few people (even locals) actually know the history of the place. I don't know all that much about DYK either but I'll give it a shot. Thanks again for your help, it's much appreciated! SagaciousPhil - Chat 09:02, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

RAF Thornaby

Hi, i have a couple of problems, where do i have to sign the posts? and the elevation and coordinates of the airfield. The RAF had the elevation of Thornaby at 60 feet which i tried to change but it keeps changing back and, the coordinates the RAF had were 5432 North and 0118 West, which i have not tried to change. Also i'm in possession of a motor race program produced by the Middlesbrough and District Motor Club dated 9 August 1959 which contradicts the claim that the first race meeting took place on 6 September 1959, Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.4.91.211 (talk) 19:49, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

1. When you post on talk pages you should add ~~~~ which automatically says who you are and when you posted the message so other people know who is talking (which is what we call signing), for example if you look at your own talkpage for my messages it adds my name and time i posted the message so you can tell who said what and when
2. The convert template "18 m" is used to turn metres into feet since everyone on Wikipedia uses a different type of measurement. In which reference does it says the elevation of the airfield? As some books use the centre of the triangle runways and some use the location of the airfield headquarters as the elevation point which often varies in height.
3. The exact co-ordinates of 52 32 00 N 001 18 00 W puts the point where the E/W runway crosses over the NE/SW, which today is just east of the roundabout with the full-size replica Spitfire aircraft at the junction of Thornaby Road, Bader Avenue and Trenchard Avenue. The centre of the three runways was located 54 32 05 N 001 17 44 W which is currently Blenheim House (according to Google Street View) however if you wish to change it go ahead as we cannot use satellite imagery/street view as a reference.
4. The motor sport section is currently without a page number within the reference as the person who added the information did not put one in, so i have moved the reference before the part where it says "There is some evidence that one race meeting was organised by Middlesbrough & District Motor Club, they produced at least two of the race programs, 1959 and 1960" then you can add the reference at the end of the paragraph.
5 Also why do you not want to have a proper wikipedia account since you can do more like being able to add RAF Thornaby to your watchlist and edit certain articles which people without an account cannot?
Hope it helps
From Gavbadger (talk) 20:37, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
1 I'll have a look on the talk page, i think i know what you mean.
2 The elevation was given on the Thornaby sign on the tower which read AMSL 60 feet, its also given as 60 feet on period aeronautical maps, although i have a flight map from 1951 which gives it as 61 feet. There's a picture of the sign on the tower on UK control towers and airfield photographs of WW2.
3 If you look on Aerial Views of UK Airports and Airfields you can still see part of the peri track which runs into the West end of the E/W runway at Bader Avenue (left of the Spitfire). If you look across to the East end near the woods part of it is still there behind the club in Tedder avenue. The NE/SW runway ran from Wolsingham drive, along Trenchard avenue and ended at blackbush walk, Blenheim house is north of the E/W/ runway.
4 Ok i'll have a look at that.
5 I did a couple of years ago but can't remember if i gave a password or not, if i did i'd never be able to remember it, could i join twice?
Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.4.91.211 (talk) 21:18, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
Hello, 2: Infobox changed to 60ft, 3:Ok, If you want to change the coordinates, go ahead, 5: Yes. Gavbadger (talk) 21:50, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

2. Cheers, 3. Ok, will do, i would'nt usually be fussed but there's a well known photograph taken in the crew room with, Thornaby 5432N 0118W, and all us anoraks have it! 5. Ok i'll join again.... Many thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.4.91.211 (talk) 22:01, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks a lot ...

... for the barnstar. The ISO codes for regions of the UK can be found on this page. And by the way, if you use "region:GB-" (hyphen followed by nothing) in a coord template or in a "coord_region" infobox field, it shows up as an error in this log, which is why I was attracted to the articles in the first place. It's better to use just "GB" unless you know the specific subregion code, and often that's quite sufficient. Deor (talk) 20:36, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Longside

I had just noticed the changes when I got your message. I don't have the book any longer as I'd got it from the library. Phoned a local and was told soo would be more likely to be pig, so I've changed the article to be on the safe side. SagaciousPhil - Chat 18:34, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Ok, Thanks. Gavbadger (talk) 18:41, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Sandbox installation template

I seem to have fixed the issue and have gotten the other location parameters to display. With a bit of luck, and the exception of the airfield map coordinates section - which may not be required - all that is needed now is some tricolation (dialect: "tarting up"). GraemeLeggett (talk) 22:47, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

I wouldn't bring out the banner just yet as i have just checked the testcases page and when the "switch" is changed only the airfield information header disappears and nothing else, which is quite a problem! Gavbadger (talk) 22:53, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
How are you getting on? Noticed you're having a go at the elevation at the moment. I haven't looked at the current code so apologies if you've already tried this. In pseudo code, I see it as going something like this.
If elevation-m or elevation-f or elevation (are present)
Then
if elevation (is present) then (show in infobox) "Elevation: elevation" Else
(show in infobox) "Elevation: elevation-m metres / elevation-f ft"
There probably ought to be a couple more Ifs to avoid putting in the m and ft if theres no value for it.
Alternatively (or as well as) the code could if the airport switch is used display the elevation next to the runway info and in other cases put it next to the map. Though that might be going a bit far... GraemeLeggett (talk) 19:18, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
All i did for elevation, was to put the actual parameter in as it was missing and then used the simple convert template to get it to convert, nothing else. Since elevation only came from the airport infobox and nothing else i cannot see why it should be moved since it looks fine with the runway information. The real issues with the infobox are the runways and map (or lack of). Gavbadger (talk) 19:59, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Shipdham

Thanks for the reply on Shipdham Airfield. Sadly this civil airfield seems to be staggering towards returning to agriculture rather than building on the early hopes. No more ATC, no more runway lights, no license any more, no more flying school, no gliding club any more and no more ai shows. Along with Norfolk County Council using taxpayers money to block private investment at Coltishall these are sad days for aviation in Norfolk. DiverScout (talk) 20:23, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Indeed, i have already liked RAF Coltishall for some reason. Gavbadger (talk) 20:32, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

template sandbox testcase

I felt I had to reset the parameters in the Compatibility section of the testcases. The section is to check how far the new template would be a seamless transition for the airport one and to compare the new template side by side with the current one, the inputs have to be the same. RNAS at Caldale, Orkney

Hi, I just noticed an editor made a change to RNAS Longside as there was an airship base at Caldale on Orkney, so it seems the plaque at Lenabo is wrongly stating it was the northern most. Being naturally curious (OK, just downright nosey) I did a quick spin on google for it as I couldn't find anything on Wikipedia? I'm sure you already know about it but I thought it might be something you would be interested in. I managed to find a book with preview on it here. Seems it was closed after a couple of fatal accidents. I thought you might want to do an article on it? Sorry in advance if I'm being inappropriate and feel free to completely ignore me! SagaciousPhil - Chat 18:39, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

I noticed it as well, but I only went as far to look on here. I will create the article, thank you for telling me. Gavbadger (talk) 19:05, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
You're welcome - my forte has always been delegation (aka:avoiding doing any work myself  ). It does sound interesting though, doesn't it? SagaciousPhil - Chat 19:49, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
It's at RNAS Caldale. It's alright, it was closed because of the wind and there was a kite repair centre post Jan 1918. I personally prefer Second World War military installations more but I am willing to work on the WW1 era installations. Gavbadger (talk) 20:43, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Installation template

Do you happen to have a timeline on when this will be finished? I know myself, and possibly a few others, are waiting until this template is finished before we update anything, so any timeline to completion would be great! Thanks! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 21:44, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

I believe everything bar the co-ordinates part is working (Although I have no idea what is wrong with the co-ords). I have just left a message on Graeme's talk page asking about them but there's a notice there saying he is busy in real life. I know it will be finished by July 2013 but the sooner the better will help me out a lot, since during the upcoming June B-class drive I hope to change a large amount of 8th AF USAAF station infoboxes over. Gavbadger (talk) 22:42, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
What exactly is the issue with coordinates? Kevin Rutherford (talk) 23:20, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
I have no idea. Sorry. Gavbadger (talk) 08:14, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
Sorry about not putting time in on the issue. I have laid out my thinking as to why coordinates are an issue at Template talk:Infobox military installation/sandbox. GraemeLeggett (talk) 10:18, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
Do we know any people who might be experts in this who would be willing to help us? Kevin Rutherford (talk) 01:37, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
I personally know no-one that could help. We might have to try the Mil:Hist project. Gavbadger (talk) 00:15, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Hucknall Aerodrome Entry

Hello Gav Badger,

My name is Colin Anthony, the information for the Hucknall Aerdrome entry is coming from a book - Notts and Derbyshire Airfields in the Second World War book by Robin J Brooks and a further book Twenty-One Squadrons by Leslie Hunt (504 sqn included) and google searches. I also have a fair amount of first hand witness knowlege from local individuals. The books I am of course just removing the key points.

Thanks for helping me with the project, it quite heavy going but do you think it is shaping up okay?

Best Regards.

Colin. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Guernsey13!! (talkcontribs) 11:37, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello Colin
It looks fine at the moment. However the referencing side is troubling me somewhat. In the article you say use have used "Google searches" you need to actually say which website and when you looked at each individual one. I have added a template you need to use, to both the article and below in this message, also "first hand witness knowlege from local individuals" is a BIG no-no on Wikipedia, unless it has been published by a reliable source it shouldn't go into any article at all regardless of their reputation. The books you used are fine but you need to remember they are subject to copyright so you need to completely re-write the information you get from them.

I have set up for you one of the referencing techniques we use on Wikipedia for the two books.
The "Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Airfields in the Second World War" book is below:
The first line provided is the line reference which you put after the information. You just need to fill in the page numbers twice in each reference.

The second sentence is all about the book and only needs to be placed once in the bibliography section of the article (which I have already done for you)
*

The "Twenty-One Squadrons - The History of the Royal Auxiliary Airforce 1925 - 1957" book is below
The first line provided is the line reference which you put after the information. You just need to fill in the page numbers twice in each reference.

The second sentence is all about the book and only needs to be placed once in the bibliography section of the article (which I have already done for you)
*
For websites you use the following:
This reference goes after the information and (relevant punctuation such as a full stop or comma, if applicable). The publisher should only be wiki linked "information" if the subject is notable by Wikipedia standards.

Good Luck. Gavbadger (talk) 15:25, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Tagging rollbacks as vandalism

Hi Gavbadger, For the 2nd time today you tagged my edits or creations as "vandalism" and rolled them back. I feel you should have just edited them and not rolled them back. And, certainly using the Vandal tag was over the top. See: RAF Bruntingthorpe and Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground. Maybe it was accidental, if you're using some tool for the rollbacks, but the Vandal tag is what is coming up. Checkingfax (talk) 21:06, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Good Evening Checkingfax
When I reverted your edit for the RAF article I wrote "soon to be filled" adding onto the default message in the edit summary and top of the page it says "If you are undoing an edit that is not vandalism, explain the reason in the edit summary" i clearly wrote the reason for the revert showing it was not vandalism and it shows in the page history.
For the proving ground article I changed the redirect by just normally editing it there was no revert tool used at all. The page history clearly shows this: [1]
Roger that. Thank you. Checkingfax (talk) 21:24, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Template on Operation Herrick

Hey, Gavbadger. The template that I removed from the Operation Herrick page is for redirects only; it's supposed to be used on pages that were turned into redirects as a result of a merge. That's why the #REDIRECT Page name bit is there; it doesn't make any sense for that redirect syntax to be in a non-redirect. Anyway, jusdt letting you know that I've gone ahead and removed it again; it's really not supposed to be there. 98.231.213.113 (talk) 14:51, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

World War II

Women of World War II memorial, Whitehall.

With regards to this edit. I think you are mistaken in assuming "World War II" is not British English. See for example "The Women of World War II" memorial in Whitehall (close to the Cenotaph]. Or take this [British Legion FAQ which quite happily uses both "Second World War" and "World War II" in the text (and a Google search of ["world war II" site:gov.uk] returns thousands of examples of World War II and Second World War, not infrequently on the same page).-- PBS (talk) 22:06, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Jefford

Are you using the 2002 edition or the 1988 edition? And any reason why you're using an out of date template like wikicite when cite book supports harv referencing probably more easily than wikicite. NtheP (talk) 17:38, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

1988, used to have 2001 edition but was damaged beyond repair, there is another user who is using the 2001 edition (with cite book) mainly on articles concerning RAF bases in Northern/Western Scotland. I never knew wikicite was out of date, and prefer wikicite since when you click on the citation it goes straight to the book in the bibliography. Gavbadger (talk) 17:45, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
The ISBN is wrong for the 1st (1988) edition. Citebook will give you the same clickthrough if you use sfn footnotes rather than <ref name=> NtheP (talk) 17:55, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I will update the referencing styles to sfn and cite book. But on the RAF Castletown article I cannot get it when you click on the citations in the references in goes to book in the bibliography. The reference is No. 10 and I have put in your cite book in the bibliography. Can you help please? Gavbadger (talk) 18:17, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
Sorted it, I couldn't get the link either then worked out the problem - for |ref=harv to work properly the surname of the author has to match and of course Jefford is not the same as Jefford MBE. Quick tinker with the ref parameter sorts it. NtheP (talk) 19:10, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. I will start changing them over. Gavbadger (talk) 19:17, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

List of ISAF Installations in Afghanistan

Gavbadger- Thanks for the heads up and corrections on the List of ISAF installations in Afghanistan. I assume you are the original author, if so thanks for cataloging all the info and publishing. I have a format idea I'd like to pass by you, check out my sandbox I think it will make the page a little easier to navigate.

Regarding the US Army to USA - I completely agree with you, having the official acronym the same as our country code is a little silly. I'm on board with your criticism. Thanks

Cheers VTCofC (talk) 02:30, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, it looks fine. You'll need to add a quick message to the article talk page to say what you are doing since i'm not the only other person to edit it. I see "Type" has dissapeared i wasn't too sure if i liked it there or not. Good luck. Gavbadger (talk) 03:30, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Gavbadger - Look at my sandbox, I like what you did I took it one step further and made it a little more organized - let me know if you want my edits or not, I see no point in working on this if it's just going to be undone. Thanks VTCofC (talk) 01:35, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

My issue is that i thought we were dividing into RC's and no further, having a table for one base looks silly add 3 or 4 tables together i think would look better and adding extra provinces for where their might or might not have ISAF bases in them seems unusual. What do you think? Gavbadger (talk) 02:06, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to RAF Northolt may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "{}"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Convert in infobox

Just an FYI re AAC Netheravon and RAF Syerston: I monitor Category:Convert invalid options and noticed that convert was complaining about a missing value in these articles. It's no problem, but if you are adding more of those infoboxes, you might consider commenting-out unused converts as I did: example. Johnuniq (talk) 03:11, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Thank you, i'll change my prepared code. Gavbadger (talk) 12:57, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
