What was learned from doing the Wikipedia extra credit?

I am really interested in hearing what you learned in the process of doing this extra credit on Wikipedia, whether it was about learning how to use the Wikipedia system itself, seeing how you are connected with information, what it is like to be an active editor with the wide world here, or something else about how information and evidence works in an open and accessible way. I would also love to hear if any of you plan to continue with this in any way!

Any replies to this will be appreciated and helpful in my understanding what resonated. @Sisiqin: @Shuer: @Scarlett90: @KentView: @Erikagpaul: @Ev790: @PurpleMercury: @MMMcS: @Yunye2017: @Xl2085: @Pn612: FULBERT (talk) 09:51, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

I think I got many things from doing this extra credit assignment. First, I think it helped with the mindset needed to write the research proposal, especially the importance of avoiding direct quotes and instead relying on your own brain to read the material and express it in your own words. Along with your encouragement, I think the "be bold" encouragement you get as an individual Wikipedia editor (even though we were only just starting we have the same opportunities to contribute as anyone else) carried over for me and increased my confidence that I could write a research proposal. I think there's also a lesson in how to take constructive feedback thoughtfully, not personally. Overall I think this extra credit was a great complement to what we learned in class! Monica 16:34, 20 October 2017 (UTC) (talk)

Thanks for the feedback, MMMcS; quite helpful. Hope you consider continuing with it in some capacity! FULBERT (talk) 17:56, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

Somehow super pride of myself. publish things that can be seen by all over the world feels great. Overall, i think i learned a lot. I really appreciate everyone's work. Also, this extra credits helped me to think through my proposal paper. really helping on practicing APA format. PurpleMercury (talk) 17:05, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for sharing this PurpleMercury; all the best with continuing!! FULBERT (talk) 17:58, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

I learned how to edit wiki items and add viable picture to a concept. During the research, we can edit a page tiny step by step, which makes a concept explanation more accurate and reliable. Yunye2017 (talk) 14:30, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

Good points, Yunye2017! Appreciate your time spent on it over the course! FULBERT (talk) 17:59, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

Some other topics that were reported include the need to respect Wikipedia naming conventions (accounts are those of people, and should not appear like companies or organizations), along with an acknolwedgement that people were not aware editing was open to everybody, edits and errors were so quickly changed and reviewed by a vast army of volunteers, that contributing to this now and in the future is all free and accessible to anybody with Internet access, and that it was so doable, even given the wonky coding that is needed in places. Week 1 by Miranda

Hi professor, exploring the usage of Wikipedia is pretty fun, never thought I would do things like this since I had never edited anything on Wiki or attempted to. I was amazed by how accurate the data are and how comprehensive Wikipedia is. Now I want to contribute more to Wikipedia and b part of it. I have found a lot of great materials that related to my topic.Mirandacst (talk) 18:53, 4 November 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mirandacst (talkcontribs) 18:51, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

Week 2 Assignment: Jodi

I have completed the article evaluation and left reflections in my Sandbox for your review. Interesting to see the types of messages various folks leave for each other on Talk pages. Not always nice! Hmm. Spsjaggy1 (talk) 21:07, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

Agreed Spsjaggy1. Talk: pages can be a useful way of engaging in public discussion, and given their somewhat permanent nature, it is generally good karma to be polite and (to some extent) professional, IMHO. Replied to you there as well. FULBERT (talk) 15:22, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

week 2 by Miranda

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Mirandacst/sandbox The link above is the Sandbox article review for week 2, I found the guidance really helped and the Sandbox really helped me brainstorming while I am gathering information. Mirandacst (talk) 19:04, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

Thanks Mirandacst! Sandboxes are a good place on Wikipedia to do work (and still be able to link to it) and readily access it as a link on the upper right of the window here. BTW, I replied to yhou on it. FULBERT (talk) 15:34, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

Week 2 Yike Chen

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ykekaixin Hi professor, exploring Wiki is interested. I find for my interested field that I can have chance to do something to help people know better if I find reliable and accurate reference. Ykekaixin (talk) 05:53, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

I replied to you Ykekaixin, though that review should be in your Sandbox. Please move it there and then reply to be here again and I will check it. FULBERT (talk) 15:40, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

Week 4 Assignment: Jodi

Hello! I added content to the page on Ageism. In the section on Employment, I added 2 sentences (and 3 references) about how midlife women may be discriminated against due to appearance - in line with my research topic. Whew! Spsjaggy1 (talk) 22:16, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

Great edits, Spsjaggy1! FULBERT (talk) 15:18, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

Week 3 Assignment - Arwa

I just completed some minor edits on the Airstrikes on hospitals in Yemen article. I restructured the article to have a timeline and subheadings. I also added some dates to make it easier to follow. Overall, it felt like a great first step! There are so many articles on the topic, it would be great if someone was able to bring them all together! --Arwaaliriani (talk) 16:34, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

Excellent edits on the article Arwaaliriani; the edits held and are still current! To your suggestion about bringing them together, you can always look at How to create your first article and consider using the Article Wizard! Would certainly count toward this extra credit if you want to discuss. FULBERT (talk) 15:23, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

Week 4 Assignment - Arwa

I just finished adding a sentence to the Airstrikes on hospitals in Yemen article. Under January 2016, I found that there was an undocumented event. I cited the event using two news articles. I also posted some comments in the page's talk section. Looking forward to adding more! --Arwaaliriani (talk) 17:11, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

Excellent work, Arwaaliriani! FULBERT (talk) 15:24, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

Week 3 Assignment: Jodi

Hello from chilly Rhode Island! I have completed the week 3 assignment. I went back to the impostor syndrome article and made an edit to a section of the text that I felt could be phrased better. I left a comment on the article's talk page as well. Have to admit, I was super nervous to click the save button. Ha! I guess we'll see if the community is ok with my copy edit... Spsjaggy1 (talk) 05:14, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

Great edits and usage of the Talk: page. Here a week later, the edits are still current! Can you mention a bit about what made you nervous to click the save button, Spsjaggy1? FULBERT (talk) 15:16, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
Oh, you know - the whole "I made a change" thing! :-) It was the realization that I was contributing to something much bigger than myself! I guess I got over that whole thing when I actually added content this week...ha! Spsjaggy1 (talk) 16:44, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

Week 3 Assignment Yike Chen

Hi professor Jeffery,

I have made a change in my week2 assignment. I think I did it right and meet your requirement, please check! Thank you!

Last week, I find someone already add the 2017 NYC marathon info in the wikipedia. I reviewed the page, and find the 2016 NYC marathon race result is still empty. Now you can see my contribution on NYC marathon page! !!!New_York_City_Marathon I have added winners as well as the citation, and I am soooo excited. Does this mean if someone search the 2016 NYC marathon result, they can see my edition? That is so cool!

Hi professor, I have edited the Wikipedia pageSport_in_China. I added another heading named "Sports industry stages" under the "sports business" part. I cited Jie Zhang's article using the doi,(Doi :10.1080/09523367.2015.1022720) and the wiki page automatically generated a citation for me. So cool!! Please take a look at it. Week 5 Assignment: Jodi

Hello again! I added a new section and various content to the page on GE. In the section on Marketing initiatives, I added a section about GE's recent advertising campaigns to feature women in STEM careers. I also added a short paragraph to the Ageism article in the section on Related campaigns regarding a new movie project which will feature the perspectives of a middle-aged woman. Spsjaggy1 (talk) 07:42, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Great changes. I hope you subscribed to it, as you would have seen your changes were reverted. What thoughts do you have about it Spsjaggy1? FULBERT (talk) 01:42, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
Yeah. Saw the page and the comments by the lovely (NOT!) Wikipedian who reverted the changes. I figured that adding content to a page for a multi-national corporation might be risky...and I agree with the dude that my content was 'essay-like' (that's the academic influence) and that I should have not used the particular source, but I didn't think it was 'spam'...Looks like I'm not alone in my feelings about this guy's online behavior. I replied to him with my thoughts on the article talk page. ;-) Spsjaggy1 (talk) 03:17, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
OMG. This guy is relentless! We've been having an interesting back and forth on the article talk page, but I'm done. He can insult me all he wants...I'm taking my toys and going home. ;-) Spsjaggy1 (talk) 05:53, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
I will reply here once. I am not your TA but if I were I would point out to you that your use of a source that was blatant hard-selling reflects digital illiteracy; it is almost worse that you "didn't mean to". The internet is full of good things as well as garbage and lots of things in between, and in 2017 if you cannot sort out what is high quality from what is speech intended to persuade without regard for truth you are in serious trouble. I find it concerning that your instructor said this edit was "Great". That is all your business, however.Jytdog (talk) 16:47, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
This is an extra credit assignment as part of a research class and it is supposed to be a learning experience. Your comments (as negative as they may be) are helping me learn to be a better digital citizen. Thanks again for your feedback. Spsjaggy1 (talk) 16:51, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Hi! I've left some feedback on the student's page and a response on teh talk page. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:42, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Basically, the student's content did need work. The content contained marketing material and things that could be seen as marketing prose, plus some of the sourcing came from places that posted sponsored content - in other words, news pieces that were written because the company paid for them. I do think that removing the content was the right thing to do - it's what I would have done, honestly. I do think that Jytdog could have explained things more thoroughly to the student and could have phrased it better, since the student did take it the wrong way. However I will say that Spsjaggy1 could have responded better - basically, "keep calm and Wikipedia on" because getting upset makes it harder to communicate. I've left a draft on the student's page that takes out the worst of the promotional content, but it still needs work to clean up the promotional terminology. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:08, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback Shalor. I appreciate your suggestions. I think I was so taken aback by the negativity of the individual that I responded to it similarly. Lessons learned. Spsjaggy1 (talk) 20:11, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for your help and guidance Shalor. Appreciated! FULBERT (talk) 16:18, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 5 Assignment - Arwa Aliriani

I've assigned myself two articles related to the proposal we've been working on in class. The first article is Intellectual capital. I added a couple of examples of methods of intellectual capital measurement (there were previously none mentioned). The second article I chose is Voluntary disclosure where I added intellectual capital disclosure as an example and provided a brief definition. Looking forward to your comments! --Arwaaliriani (talk) 22:51, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, AkhterMonir for fixing it! FULBERT (talk) 20:31, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 3 Md Hussain

Hi Professor

I have assigned myself an article name Touch_ID, and read through it. I have made a minor change to it under the section of [Impact]. Before it was "US National Security Agency" Now it read.."US Government National Security Agency (NSA)". AkhterMonir (talk) 03:07, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

I saw the change you made and saw it was reverted. I agree, it was accurate before your change and, with your change as you made it, it did not read smoothly. What are your thoughts and feelings for making the change and having it reverted, AkhterMonir? FULBERT (talk) 20:34, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 4 Md Hussain

I have assigned myself an article name Mobile Security 'Mobile Security' and added few lines under Attacks_based_on_hardware_vulnerabilities to help enhance the article. Jail-breaking and rooting is a big part of mobile data security. AkhterMonir (talk) 02:03, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Great edit AkhterMonir. You may notice, if you are watching the source, how I went in and fixed the citation / reference formatting. FULBERT (talk) 20:39, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Please add another edit to an additional article per the assignment AkhterMonir and I will take a review of them FULBERT (talk) 20:41, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

I have edited second article name Mobile app and added few lines about the Opera Mobile Store under Others to enhance the articles. Thank you. AkhterMonir (talk) 03:08, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

Thanks AkhterMonir. I fixed the citation for it. I could only encourage you to explain what that means in a bit more depth! FULBERT (talk) 17:43, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 5 Assignment Yike Chen

Hello, I assigned myself in 2 article and also did the summaries and added citation . The first one is Beijing MarathonBeijing_Marathon and the second one is Shanghai Marathon [[1]]. I added the start line and finish line for Shanghai Marathon.

For the Beijing Marathon wiki page, I added two sentence to update info according to Beijing Marathon's official page. However, I also leave one message about the history part. The only one heading under Beijing Marathon wiki page is the 2012 Japanese entrants, which is related to political issue about Diaoyu Island between China and Japan. I personally think it is not appropriate that this is written on the wiki. Therefore I left a note on talk page, hope someone will apply to me. If not, I would delete this part.Ykekaixin (talk) 05:10, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Great changes and suggestion. Keep an eye on this even after the course Ykekaixin! FULBERT (talk) 17:49, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 6 Assignment Yike Chen

Hello, I insert a picture into Beijing Marathon Wikipedia page. The picture is 2014 Beijing Marathon Medal, and I took it by myself! [[2]]

I did not notice that it is very hard to find a proper picture! At first, I wanted to find a picture that meet the wiki's needs and I failed, even the picture on the Beijing Marathon official website has its privacy rules that I could not use (I did not know it before, I thought inserting picture is much more easier task than editing sentence on wiki). Finally I decided to use my own picture and upload it in wikimedia commons. I uploaded two pictures and edit pic's name and description. It immediately shows when I searched Beijing Marathon on wiki edit page! How fast! Hope this pic can show how special a Chinese marathon medal can be because the design is special and different from other medals in America. And hope I can be a better photographer in the future. Ykekaixin (talk) 17:13, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Glad to see you found a need and took concrete steps with your own picture to meet that need. Great share, Ykekaixin! FULBERT (talk) 17:51, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 2 Assignment - Qingyi Wang

Hey Professor here is my Week 2 assignment in the Sandbox section. Let me know if you need any changes! Qingyiwang (talk) 19:40, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

Great you started on this Qingyiwang! FULBERT (talk) 17:54, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 3 Assignment - Qingyi Wang

For the assignment of week 3 I made a minor change to the Kopi Luwak page, specifically under the section Production. I felt that there was an awkward sentence so I rephrased it. Hope that's what you were looking for. Let me know if I need to do anything else!Qingyiwang (talk) 20:17, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

Great edits to aid in clarification Qingyiwang. FULBERT (talk) 17:55, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 6 Assignment: Jodi

I went a little rogue and edited a page that isn't related to my research topic. It is, however, related to me as a musician since I have performed at the venue and was an employee there for 12 years. I added information about the recently deceased co-owner and also added a photo from Wikimedia Commons to the page. Hope this is ok! Spsjaggy1 (talk) 21:04, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

Instead of going rogue, BE BOLD, Spsjaggy1! Great edits. FULBERT (talk) 18:13, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 3 Assignment - Lu Yuan

I made this change in Public opinion on climate change. For this minor change, I modified grammar and perfected sentences. Please take a look. I will modify it more in further assignment.--Ly1072 (talk) 23:21, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for cleaning up part of this article, Ly1072. ---FULBERT (talk) 18:27, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 5 Assignment - Lu Yuan

In the article of public figure, I made the change to describe what is a public figure more deeper. In the List of environmental films, I add the Before the Flood in it and lists its theme and author. Here is the link of my work. --Ly1072 (talk) 03:10, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Great changes on both, Ly1072. It would have been especially helpful if you would have provided a citation for the public figure edit. Any chance you can go back and add one? ---FULBERT (talk) 18:36, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
Yes, I already add a citation on this change. Please take a look. Thank you for let me make my work more academic. --Ly1072 (talk) 21:32, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

I updated the article Public opinion on climate change because its information is outdated. I add some newest information about public opinion on climate change or global warming in the United States from 2015 to 2017 with a citation. It is about the percentage of Americans who concerned about global warming as a great deal. I found it is needed to update because people should know about newly public opinion. --Ly1072 (talk) 00:20, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Your changes were fine, Ly1072, but this part of the assignment was intended to be on a new (different) article than you worked on in the last assignment. Can you make some edits to a new (additional) one, as well? ---FULBERT (talk) 18:32, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
I already made another change in a new article celebrity branding, I add few advantages in celebrity branding to enhance it a little bit and with a citation.--Ly1072 (talk) 21:23, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Ly1072! ---FULBERT (talk) 02:07, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 4 Assignment- Qingyi Wang

Updated the article Maan Coffee. Added company information from the company website on to the Wiki page. Let me know if you see anything wrong or if there's more for me to do! ThanksQingyiwang (talk) 22:34, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

I saw the changes you made Qingyiwang which were then reverted by Another_Believer as you did not use secondary sources. Qingyiwang, can you add any support to this by using verifiable and reliable sources? Part of this means we need to use sources that are other than those an organization self-reports about themselves. FULBERT (talk) 18:04, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
Yes, I welcome article expansions using newspaper articles. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:16, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
I updated the old version with a secondary source that talks about maan coffee. Is that the way to do that or should I take out my previous information from the company website and only put the secondary source?Qingyiwang (talk) 21:15, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
That was already reverted; did you see the revision history that Another Believer left when it was reverted, suggesting to include news sources that do not include the homepage itself? Qingyiwang Add those more objective secondary sources as citations back in ---FULBERT (talk) 02:13, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

Week 5 Assignment - Qingyi Wang

Hi Professor, sorry for the late update but I updated the article SPR Coffee as well and I just realized I forgot to post it here. I added information as well as a logo. It got reverted yesterday due to secondary source issue like my other article and I added a support for that. Let me know if this is okay. Thanks.Qingyiwang (talk) 21:26, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Those were also reverted for the same reason Qingyiwang. Go back and add secondary (news or published research) sources that are independent of the company itself ---FULBERT (talk) 02:15, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for making a report about 45.114.118.154 (talk · contribs · block log) on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, it appears that the editor you reported may not have engaged in vandalism, or the user was not sufficiently or appropriately warned. Please note there is a difference between vandalism and unhelpful or misguided edits made in good faith. If the user continues to vandalise after a recent final warning, please re-report it. Thank you. Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 18:25, 24 December 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for looking into this Coffee. Can you help me understand how to sufficiently warn somebody or provide feedback for when they are editing without providing evidence when they are not logged on and are only available via an IP address? I want to provide feedback so the user learns proper behavior and so the issues in question ceases, though am at a loss as to what to do as a next step. Thanks for your guidance.
