Caerulein-cerulein-cerulitide

I just entered an article on cerulein and now find your article on cerulitide. These and caerulein are the same molecule with different names. I am going to move my cerulein information to your cerulitide article, but would like us to consider changing the cerulitide article title to caerulein since this latter name gets more hits than either cerulitide or cerulein when "googled." Hamleteer (talk) 20:19, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Merging into cerulein into ceruletide, and moving to caerulein sounds fine to me. One consideration that occurs to me though is that pharmaceutical articles are preferably titled using International Nonproprietary Names, but I don't know if there is one for this chemical compound. -- Ed (Edgar181)
I have now merged the two articles. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:21, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

I note your blocking of User:86.5.103.188 for vandalism which is fine by me. However the reason given being BLP violation is difficult to sustain as Ian has been dead for a few years now.  Velella  Velella Talk   20:38, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

OK, I didn't catch that. I'll change the block reason to vandalism. -- Ed (Edgar181) 20:39, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Apologies

No, no, i forgot about sandbox. See for a school project, i making a mock list of obituaries and i was gonna remove it when i finished, but i now remember that there's sandbox, thanks for the 411! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.192.65.75 (talk) 20:44, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Article deletion

Hello Edgar181

There was an article that you blocked today from Bucsfan11, on Chris Taylor the game creator. First of all Thank you, Second It was a prank that some kids played on my son and I wanted to bring it to the schools attention that he goes to and I was wondering if you could send me on my private email the article and if you know who did it or any information regarding Bucsfan11. Or ever and IP address or the computer it might have come from whether it was the school computer or a private one. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated, and let me know how we can communicate so I can get the information.

Thank you Concerned mom —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.8.129.105 (talk) 02:29, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

I have blocked User:Bucfan11 and that account can no longer be used. I have also removed the offending edits from the displayed history of the article Chris Taylor (game designer). But because of Wikipedia's privacy policy, there are only a limited number of administrators that have access to information about a registered user's IP address and computer (see Wikipedia:CheckUser for details), and I am not one of them. To contact the individuals with the necessary access to this data, you or the school can email functionaries-en lists.wikimedia.org and explain the situation. I believe that someone there should be able to help you. If you have any further questions, please just let me know. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:16, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Balsaminol B

Hi, thanks for adding pictures and other info to my cucurbitane derivative articles!

I have a very weak knowledge of chemical nomenclature, but I believe that there is a discrepancy between the names of Balsaminol B in the lead and in the chembox. The compound seems to be a triol with a methoxy in 7β, and not a tetraol. Is that right? All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 02:17, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

You're right, I seem to have put the synonym of balsaminol A into the chembox for balsaminol B. Thanks for catching it. It's now fixed. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:02, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Privo - COPPA

Hi, I am an Officer of Privacy Vaults Online, d/b/a Privo. I would like to know why and when you deleted us from Wikipedia? We are an FTC approved safe harbor site which provides COPPA Compliance to websites attracting children. We have not reviewed the Wikipedia posting for us in quite some time and are ready to update it but now see that we are stuck from your actions. Our corporate website is www.privo.com - Please reply?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ttayloe (talkcontribs) 23:50, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

If you want to know why I deleted an article, you have to let me know more precisely which article you are referring to (Privacy Vaults Online has never existed, and there are no deleted contributions from your current account). Can you please let me know the exact title? -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:46, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

I labeled the question Privo - COPPA --- Privo is the name our company does business under. noone knows us as Privacy Vaults Online as we d/b/a Privo. If you look up Childrens online privacy protection act (COPPA) you will see where you deleted us.

OK, I see now. I deleted the article Privo over three years ago because it was a very short article that did not make any assertion of the notability of the subject. It therefore meet criteria for deletion (see WP:CSD#A7 for details). If you think Privo meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines for inclusion (see WP:CORP), you can write an article that contains sufficient information to show that it meets this guideline. Also, you might want to have a look at Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines, which seem to apply here. -- Ed (Edgar181) 19:13, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

202.108.50.75 proxy

Hello Edgar181. Recently you blocked this IP for two years as an open proxy. i suspect that there are other proxies in the same /24 range (as many as 10), and there is an open complaint at WP:OP about that. Can you say what port you think this IP is open on? Maybe they all use the same port. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 04:26, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

I based that block on behavioral evidence and its prior block as an open proxy, rather than any technical evidence. I came across it making the same edits to Ibotenic acid and other articles as another IP which was claiming to be an open proxy, and was already blocked as such. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:50, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. EdJohnston (talk) 19:10, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Request for help

Hi Edgar181... I have nominated rhodocene, an article I largely wrote, for FA status. At the FAC page, SmartSE suggested I ask you whether you could help to redraw some illustrations as .svg files. The images are:

I don't have access to the software or the source files to do the job myself at the moment, and as you can see the existing images are grainy / pixellated. Thanks. EdChem (talk) 08:49, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

I'd be happy to create those images as SVGs. I'll be away from the computer that has the appropriate software until Monday, if that's not a problem. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:52, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
Hi Ed! I'm already at it (see File:Protonated rhodocene.svg) and hope to do all four SVGs today. Cheers, --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 14:18, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Opinion

Hi Edgar181: Happy New Year! I think I have made some improvements in my article. Today I added few short quotes and referenced them appropriately. Please look at the article and see if you have any suggestions regarding those quotes. I tried my best to have those quotes "balanced". Please let me know what you think. I would like to keep quotes from critics, however if you think it's gonna raise an issue I am willing to remove it. Thanks for your help! Regards Sausa (talk) 04:40, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Semi-protection request

Hi, I try and keep an eye on several of the young Disney star's pages, and I noticed you recently changed the revision visibility for Zendaya Coleman due to some profanity. This has been an ongoing problem on her page since the semi-protection lock was lifted on her page, so I wanted to ask if you could semi-protect her page for a few more months to prevent at least some of the offensive edits that her page seems to draw from young viewers? Her co-leading co-star on the show Shake It Up is Bella Thorne, and her page has been locked until May 2011. I think a semi-protection lock until May would be a good idea for Zendaya Coleman's page as well (in fact, all the pages for the young stars of the show would probably benefit from being protected, but Zendaya's page seems to have the most problems for some reason). Thanks. Crakkerjakk (talk) 21:05, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

  Done. Looks like a good idea. -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:38, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
  • Thank you. The bots catch a lot of the tasteless edits, but they miss a lot of them too. I try and keep an eye on many of the young Disney Channel star's pages, since I know there are many younger children reading/editing them, but sometimes I'll check in and see a page has been left for hours with degrading, obscene, and/or offensive edits about the young stars and I'm actually embarrassed to think how many thousands (literally) of younger children have read the page in that period of time. Crakkerjakk (talk) 22:14, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Cocamidopropyl betaine

Hi Edgar181: You edited the article on cocamidopropyl betaine. You changed the molar mass to 342.52 g/mol when it is really 342.59 g/mol. I had changed this but you changed it back to the wrong number. Please change thi sback because in the edit i cant find the place to change it. Thanks. samforestell — Preceding unsigned comment added by SamForestell (talkcontribs) 15:28, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

I edited the article so that the molar mass is automatically calculated based on atomic weights and the molecular formula. This gives 342.52 as the correct mass. -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:31, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

The calculations must be coming out wrong. Using the IUPAC standards for each element (12.01 g/mol for Carbon, 1.01 g/mol for Hydrogen, 14.01 g/mol for Nitrogen, and 16.00 g/mol for Oxygen) you get 228.19 g/mol for carbon, 38.38 g/mol for hydrogen, 28.02 g/mol for nitrogen, and 48.00 g/mol for oxygen which adds up to 342.59 g/mol. If you could change it that would be great. Thanks, samforestell — Preceding unsigned comment added by SamForestell (talkcontribs) 16:28, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)Sorry, Sam, I calculated it independently, and I also get to 342.52. It is probably in the rounding, the masses that the calculation uses are the 'precise' ones, and rounding the end result to 2 significant figures. I hope this explains. --Dirk Beetstra T C 16:33, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
Yep, {{Chembox Elements}} does the calculation and uses values with greater precision (more significant digits, such as 1.00794 for H instead of 1.01), which accounts for the observed difference. It is best to stick with this higher precision. -- Ed (Edgar181) 16:38, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, thank you for pointing that out. That makes much more sense. SamForestell — Preceding unsigned comment added by SamForestell (talkcontribs) 16:39, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Mikey Way

Can you please tell User:EmryMaxwell to stop recreating pages for Mikey Way/Michael James Way? (She restores them both at the same time tho they're about the same person, and he shouldn't have an article because he's in only one band.) --194.150.65.47 (talk) 15:56, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Personally, I don't see the problem with having an article on this individual. If you feel subject of the article does not meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, you can nominate the article for deletion. But in any case there should be at most one article, not two. I would encourage you to discuss the dispute on the article's talk page rather than repeatedly reverting another editor. -- Ed (Edgar181) 16:04, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
His name is Mikey Way, you restored the wrong one. And thanks for forcing me to go through another unnecessarily long process, as if I don't have anything else to do. As an admin you should know the basic rule that band members who don't have notability outside of the band don't get an article but their name is redirected to the band's article. --194.150.65.47 (talk) 16:44, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Clearly your opinion about this person's notability isn't universal. I have nominated the page for deletion (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mikey Way). I have already added your comment there. Please feel free to contribute additionally to that discussion, and refrain from continuing to edit war over this. Thank you. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:34, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. --194.150.65.30 (talk) 22:37, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

JWH-201

Hi Edgar. An enthusiastic but fairly new contributor has made a page for JWH-201 as a redirect to RCS-4, another related cannabinoid. However this redirect is incorrect as they are not the same compound, RCS-4 is a 3-benzoylindole derivative while JWH-201 is its 3-phenylacetylindole homologue. RCS-4 is notable due to its use in grey-market "herbal smoking blends" intended for use as synthetic cannabis, and has been made illegal in Sweden because of this. JWH-201 on the other hand is unlikely to ever become notable due to its low affinity for both CB1 and CB2, hence it is not likely to be used either for scientific research or be subject to abuse. I'm thinking the JWH-201 redirect page should probably just be deleted, what are your thoughts? Meodipt (talk) 10:54, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

If someone wants to recreate the article with content about the correct chemical compound, notability can be discussed then. But for now, the incorrect redirect should go, so I have deleted it. Thanks for catching the problem. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:54, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Deletion of article on Peter Newmark

I see that you deleted the article on Peter Newmark.

Before creating a new article about Peter Newmark, I wanted to check with you. The article I intend to start is about Peter Newmark, a linguist and important contributor to translation theory. The note about the article being deleted cited lack of relevance as the reason for the deletion - this leads me to suspect that the article was not, in fact, about the linguist Peter Newmark, but about some other person. Please let me know what you think.

- Riccardo (Bartolo58)

The entire contents of the article I deleted in 2007 were "Peter Newmark is a linguist who specialises in translation", so it probably was the same individual; but it didn't have enough content to really even identify the subject. Please feel free to recreate the article. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:11, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Page Deletion

I am curious to know why the page for Vanguard Cinema was deleted. This is a Film Distribution company. I wrote the page with the company's history info and mission statement, and a few factoids about them. I am new to this and cannot figure out why this was deleted. Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mschmidgall (talkcontribs) 21:40, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

I deleted Vanguard cinema because it was written in language that came across unambiguously as advertising. Wikipedia articles must be written from a neutral point of view (see WP:NPOV for details). If you think Vanguard meets Wikipedia's inclusion guidelines (see WP:CORP) and you feel you can write a more neutral article (using your own words, rather than the company's own mission statement, for example), please feel free to recreate the article. -- Ed (Edgar181) 22:19, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi Edgar,

Thanks for your comments on records at ChemSpider.org. Unhappily I have to say that it's my fault that the incorrect names and links were made - Looking at it I can't think why I would think the cis structures were trans. Anyway, I've created cleaned up the cis structures on ChemSpider and added records for the trans structures and put the correct info into the ChemBox. Hi,

I am trying to unblock the username driversselect for the company driversselect, but it says that you blocked our username due to the association with the driversselect article. I was not with the company when this happened back in July 2009, but it has come to our attention that we need to tell the story of our company. We have no intentions of promoting our business; we just want people to have a resource for knowing about who we are. Is there any you could help with getting our username unblocked? Britt mich (talk) 02:53, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Britt mich

Wikipedia does not permit usernames that match the name of a business, so there is no point in unblocking driversselect (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). Since you have already signed up for an account of your own, that is all you need to do to start editing. Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors

Hi! Since you've been identified as an Awesome Wikipedian, I wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.

If that sounds like you and you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors during the current term, which started in January and goes through early May. If that's something you want to do, please apply!

You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 21:35, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Semi-Protection Request

Hi there. I messaged you a couple weeks ago about a semi-protection lock for the Zendaya page, and I wanted to write again to ask if you would consider putting a semi-protect lock on the Jake T. Austin page as well. He's another popular young Disney Channel star, whose page seems to attract quite a lot of childish vandalism and unverified gay rumors, etc, and his page just seems to constantly need reverting. Again, the bots catch a lot of it, and I know there are several other dependable editors who are also doing their best to catch the objectionable edits as quickly as possible, but I just wanted to ask if you would please consider a semi-protect lock for his page just to make everyone's life a little easier.. Structure of Cryogenine

I'm working on disputed-chem files, saw that you had marked commons:File:Cryogenine 3d structure.png as having incorrect attachment points. It looks like the correct structural isomer to me, could you clarify exactly which is wrong? DMacks (talk) 22:01, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Looking more closely, I still think it's the same structural isomer as commons:File:Cryogenine.svg...but different stereo (H at the ring-fusion). And .svg matches scifinder, so moot point "wrong is wrong". DMacks (talk) 22:11, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Actually I think there are more differences than that. If you look at the nitrogen heterocycle, the phenyl group should be attached at a carbon adjacent to the nitrogen, but in the disputed structure it is attached at the second carbon away. Also, the ester group should be attached at the point "para" (3rd carbon away) to the nitrogen, but in the disputed structure it is attached at a "meta" position (2nd carbon away). I put some notes on the image on Commons to point to the positions I'm referring to. -- Ed (Edgar181) 22:19, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Ah yes, now I see that. Great use of annotation tool too! DMacks (talk) 14:32, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Vandalism of Page

Hello Edgar,

You were helpful when vandals attacked a page on Wikipedia in the past. One of the vandals has returned. Here is what I wrote in the comment section of the Joe Viglione page:

The page has information on a film director, Joe Viglione, who produced cds and a DVD by Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane, is published in over eight books, with numerous articles naming his interviews with Brad Meltzer, Michael Moore, Ray Manzarek of The Doors, comedian Margaret Cho, and more according to Google. Google also has information he co-produced Grammy winner Buddy Guy including contributions from Bruce Springsteen guitarist Nils Lofgren, Aerosmith's Joe Perry, Genya Ravan of Ten Wheel Drive and others. If anything the site needs an update, not a deletion. Joe Viglione is also noted on the web for being a 2010 "Producer of the Year". It should also be noted that the first posting on this "discussion" is someone who may have vandalized this site years back. Someone should update the page with the correct information. Thank you for looking into this, Edgar.

Long term potential vandal

Hello, long time no write. This is because it's a long time since I'd last contacted you or our Indonesian misinformation friend must be out of commission for a little while (the guy last struck about ten days ago).

Anyway, this new one I'll be reporting to you is actually not the guy, but is a long-term vandal nonetheless. Noted vandal back to his old tricks...

Hello.

Remember the vandal using the now blocked address 121.54.42.150 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) (archive link)? He had just reared his ugly head again today , this time using his same MO using several addresses on the 121.54.54.32/27 range (so far, it's from the 121.54.54.4x, 121.54.54.5x, and 121.54.54.6x range), all in within 1:00-2:00PM (UTC). Here's the list of the addresses he used that I found (who know what else he used just in that hour):

Incredibly, two edits by two of the addresses above are done a minute apart! Who knows what method he used in this madness. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 16:09, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

I blocked the range 121.54.54.0/24 for a month. IPs in this wider range appear to be problematic as well. -- Ed (Edgar181) 18:19, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Hello! I noticed my page was deleted and I know it was not that good lol but it was the first thing I researched into trying to make a page on wikipedia. Do you have any advice on how to make it better? The reason why I wrote about it, was, well, it all started when my friend asked me if wumbus was a word so I searched what is a wumbus and found that page and was like yay! first wiki project i could do because its not on wiki. I also did not want to sound like I was advertising it and I did not want to bash it (as I read in the guidlines the page has to have a nuteral bias) So i just picked the most neutral details and put them on there. So any thoughts??? Also I hope I did this wiki talk thing write, and thanks for any and all advice in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Levya88 (talkcontribs) 21:09, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

One Tree Hill Cast Page

It said to contact you, well I think haha, i was looking to update some of the character pages by making main pages for the cast that have been promoted to Main, is that okay ?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by YounMcKee (talkcontribs) 22:48, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I can't tell what you are trying to ask me. There is an article on One Tree Hill (TV series), a long list of characters at List of One Tree Hill characters, and even articles on individual characters in Category:One Tree Hill characters. Can you please ask your question again, but with some specifics or some context? ("It said to contact you", for example, is meaningless without context.) -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:52, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Mass revert

Hi Edgar, I notice you just did a mass-revert on the density thing. I was working on the removal as well with Huggle—but on a tedious one-by-one basis. Your way seems a bit faster, so I guess you have a different tool for this? - DVdm (talk) 20:53, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it is Wikipedia:Rollback feature. You can request access to this feature at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Rollback. -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:05, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Ha, but I do have (and use) rollback since quite a while. I was only trying to find a way to make multiple rollbacks at once. Is there a standard way to rollback—say—the last 500 edits of a bot (or person) that has somehow gone berserk? - DVdm (talk) 22:37, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Oh, I see. I don't know of any way to do mass rollbacks without individually clicking the "rollback" button for each edit. -- Ed (Edgar181) 22:44, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) There is User:John254/mass_rollback.js, but if I remember correctly, it is pretty messy as it opens a new tab for each rollback it does. SmartSE (talk) 23:02, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Uh-oh... a memory hog - let's not try out then :-) - Cheers and thanks for the tps. DVdm (talk) 23:52, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Potassium Chloride

Hi Ed, I noticed that the chemical formula fo this compound is wrong and i can't figure out how to change it. The chembox says ClK but it should be KCl. Do you think you could change this. Thanks.--S.G.J. Forestell 22:30, 4 February 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by SamForestell (talkcontribs) --S.G.J. Forestell 22:31, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Well, they are the same molecular formula. But I agree that KCl is better than ClK, so I have switched it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 22:45, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Another request relating to rhodocene FAC

Hi Ed... I am still working on getting rhodocene to FA status, and I want to add a discussion in response to some of the comments on a structural characterisation. In the paper published in Organometallics 1998, volume 17, pp. 1716-1724 there is an ORTEP diagram of the cation labelled 10b+ on page 1719 which is the cation of [(η5-C5H5)Rh(η5-C5tBu3H2)]BF4. Would you be able to draw a diagram like this for me, with the carbon atoms labelled and (preferably) the rhodium to ring centroid dashed lines in a different colour? I have the paper and the supplementary data, if you need them emailed to you - just contact me. Thanks. EdChem (talk) 10:54, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

I'd be happy to create that image for you, if you don't mind waiting until Monday. Our library probably has access to Organometallics, but if you already have the article, it would helpful if you could just email it to me. -- Ed (Edgar181) 16:28, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Email sent. EdChem (talk) 13:59, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Got it. I'll make the image tomorrow. -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:30, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Here are a couple of possiblities. Let me know what you think. I'll make modifications as necessary, then clean them up a bit and upload a higher resolution final version. Is a skeletal structure like these fine? Is blue ok?
File:Rhodocene v1.png
This seems a bit busy to me, with all the carbons labeled. Are there just certains carbons that need to be labeled?
File:Rhodocene v2.png
This one has an orientation that matches the one in the paper. Less stylized, essentially traced from the published diagram. I can add labels, etc if you prefer this.

Hi Ed... I think we only really need C's 1 to 10 labelled, so that the diagram can be read in conjuction with the image File:Structure of cation of ((C5tBu3H2)Rh(C5H5))BF4.png. On the diagram, I was thinking of something more like an ORTEP plot rather than a skeletal structure – I was hoping for something more reminiscent of a crystal structure rather than a more abstract representation, perhaps based on CSD data. Is the something you are able and willing to do? I don't want to seem ungrateful as I do appreciate your work, it's just that I had an image much closer to the original in mind. Thanks. EdChem (talk) 13:05, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

PS: I have added the first image to the article on a temporary basis. EdChem (talk) 14:40, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
It's no problem for me to come up with something a bit different. I don't have any software that will do classic ORTEP diagrams, but what about something like this? (I can add labels, etc.) -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:59, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
File:Rhodocene v3.png
Thanks, that's much more along the lines I meant. EdChem (talk) 15:03, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
NB: the actual cation in the crystal structure is eclipsed, not staggered in conformation. EdChem (talk) 15:04, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
OK, it is eclipsed now. Thanks for catching that. The coordinates for the structure don't seem to be available as a file - only as text (which can't be cut-and-pasted) in the supplementary material pdf. So the model I'm working with won't have exact x-ray coordinates. I've added Rh-Cp bonds, but I'm not sure that is wanted or not. Which do you prefer? Also, the software I'm using doesn't handle atom labels nicely, so those can be added later with a graphics editor once the rest looks right. -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:39, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. If you look at the rhodocene article you'll see where the image goes. It supports the detailed data on bond lendths and angles. The "bonds" to the centroid are needed to illustrate the definition and statement about the centroid-rhodium-centroid angle being about 177°. It's a shame that the coords are inexact but I can use the caption to say "based on the crystal structure" and also that H's are omitted for clarity. As I said earlier, labels need not go beyond C's 1 to 10. EdChem (talk) 16:03, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
I'll put labels (C(1), C(2), etc.) on the Cp atoms and upload a final version to Commons later today. -- Ed (Edgar181) 18:30, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Great - thank you. EdChem (talk) 18:39, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
I uploaded it as File:1,2,3-tri-tert-butylrhodocenium.png. I can still modify it as you see fit. -- Ed (Edgar181) 01:30, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. My only concern is that the atom labels are hard to read. Perhaps either make them white or move them outside the atoms? What do you think? EdChem (talk) 05:00, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
I've been looking at it at a larger size, where it appears fine, but you're right that it is hard to read at the size typically used in an article. I'll move the labels to next to the atoms. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:53, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for the updated image, it looks much better.  :) EdChem (talk) 00:21, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

Deletion of James B. Morehead article

I would like to request you restore the deleted article. I just became aware of him today from the wikification of an entry in the US Aces. After checking the entry I put up the citation for his 8 kills.

He was a WWII ace which I thought was primae facia notibility

A quick google search has brought up a number of references, including a book he has written and other verification of his WWII exploits. I didn't have time to continue the work on the article this afternoon, and when I came home this evening I saw it deleted.

Wikipedia pays special attention to protecting biographies of living people, and this article has been the subject of vandalism for months, so I think the current protection is appropriate or perhaps a bit short. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:41, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

It is very common for IP addresses to change hands fairly quickly. So without evidence that this is a static IP, it's generally not a good idea to give long blocks for the first incidence of vandalism from an IP address. If the vandalism continues after the block expires, please don't hesitate to contact me or report at WP:AIV, and a longer block can be applied. -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:18, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

You're right, that was clearly a mistake. I'm not sure how that happened - it wasn't intentional. I have reduced it to 48 hrs, which is the block length I would typically use in this situation. Thanks for catching the error and letting me know. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:34, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Dydrogesterone

Hi - could you take a look at the stereochemistry in File:Dydrogesterone.png, a structure you drew some time ago? I've been verifying structures comparing ChemSpider vs Wikipedia structures, and this one popped out as having different stereochemistry at the junction of the two 6-membered rings. We have trans, but other sources have cis. I looked at a couple of journal articles, such as (Mutation Research/Genetic Toxicology and Environmental Mutagenesis Volume 419, Issues 1-3, 9 November 1998, Pages 33-41) and they seem to confirm the cis. Can you check where you got the structure from (if you can remember), and fix it if it's wrong? If you think it should be trans, can you let me know the source, so we can investigate further? Many thanks, Walkerma (talk) 05:11, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it does seem that the stereochemistry is reversed at the 9-position. I will fix it. Thanks for catching the problem and letting me know. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:36, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Indonesian vandal struck again.

The Indonesian vandal has returned to his old tricks again. Today, he used the address 61.247.31.118 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) and he seems to be gaga over Pokemon. He also vandalized the Little League World Series article, the semi-protection of which expired recently, and Children's programming on NBC, which he also frequently vandalizes. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 16:38, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

It looks like another admin has already blocked. -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:39, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
He also struck again today as 118.137.75.198 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log). Because of that, the 118.137.0.0/17 range has been blocked once again for another six months (its previous block expired a few days ago) and the three Little League World Series articles he kept vandalizing are again semi-protected, this time for a year. He must be really desparate; as you'd seen, he had "mutilated" several Pokemon articles (probably due to most of the Digimon TV seasons articles being semi-protected). Just to let you know. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 16:58, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Russian IPs vandalizing.

This is unrelated to the Indonesian vandal, but you should check the following IPs, all of which trying to put "anime" hoaxes and other misinformation and "connections" to the Philippine cartoon, Super Inggo at ang Super Tropa. I've also noted that users of these addresses (possibly a single person) have also put unsourced information and categories on other unrelated anime articles and several others. Here are the addresses I found so far (he may have used more):

To top this all off, these addresses are based in Russia. So obviously, the vandal surely couldn't provide sources for his edits as the said cartoon (if I'm not mistaken) has not been aired out of the Philippines. So can a block be imposed on either or both of the 92.100.128.0/17 and 91.122.80.0/20 ranges. It seems the addresses are from the same provider. - 14:45, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

I see the problem, but I'm a bit hesitant to block such wide ranges because it looks like the collateral damage might high. There are good edits from those ranges. The range block is only necessary if we want to encompass some IPs that haven't edited for months, and I suspect that this editor will end up using IPs that are outside the specified ranges anyway. This is an unavoidable limitation that we have when dealing with a problematic editor that uses highly variable IP addresses. So I'm wondering if there is may be a better way to address this. Perhaps with semi-protection of some of the targeted articles, for example. Any thoughts? -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:48, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
The article in question had been semi-protected before. The latest attack came long after the semi-protection expired. I've just "cleaned" it because there are many "residue" edits by the vandal that were left unnoticed the first time. For many of the other articles, the guy's edits are either one-time or done by adding some inappropriate genres, and other misinformation that can be rebutted by looking at the counterpart interwiki articles. 92.100.128.0/17 can be way too wide. As for 91.122.80.0/20, it's still too early in the game. This is all I can think of for now. For the meantime, I'll ask another admin for a second opinion. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 16:14, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Update: The Russian guy has restarted. Add 92.100.238.160 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) to the list above and is active right now. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 16:59, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

OK, I have blocked this IP address for now. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:00, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Here's an additional list, based on searching on edits that I unearthed today:

Strangely, you're partly right as he also seems to be a mixed bag, however; he does some good faith edits (especially putting valid ANN links) on one end and does his vandalism on the other. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 11:03, 23 February 2011 (UTC) Update: Here's an additional list, for your reference. Some of them were found after looking at TheFarix's edits and further digging deeper:

He's becoming a problem, despite the very minor valid edits, I should say. You can ask TheFarix as well. BTW, I've also forwarded the problem to WP:AN/I. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 14:51, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

A couple of questionable files

I'm still learning the ropes about images appropriate for Wikipedia, but there are a couple of questionable images that have recently been linked to pages I'm watching -

The first file is File:Nathan-kress+1.jpg - And I've listed the problems I believe there are with the image on it's Talk page. My first concern is obviously that the owner claimed doesn't really have ownership of the image at all (and I provide background information and links as to why I believe that), but my question is about Wikipedia's policy about images that have been heavily photoshopped (the way this one obivously has). Does extreme photoshopping like this (and not just the removal of a wrinkle or pimple by the original photographer/copyright holder) automatically disqualify an image from use on Wikipedia? I personally believe it should, but I just wanted to ask about the official policy on images that have obviously been heavily photoshopped.

The second file is File:182834 125956140810851 100001893969691 179971 847706 n.jpg - I see it's already been nominated for deletion, but my question is about celebrities uploading pictures of themselves (not that I believe this one was) - are images uploaded by a celebrity who really does own the license him/herself ever acceptable?

--- Crakkerjakk (talk) 21:11, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

The only way that a file like File:Nathan-kress+1.jpg would be acceptable would be if the person who took the original photo and owns the copyright to it was the one who uploaded photoshopped version. Otherwise, it is a violation of copyright law. If the info on the talk page for that image is correct, the image should be nominated for deletion. The photoshopping itself doesn't automatically disqualify its use on Wikipedia, but from an editorial point of view it would be less preferable than a more realistic photo. As for a celebrity uploading a photo of themselves to be used in a Wikipedia article, I don't think there is anything wrong with that at all (as long as the uploader is the one who owns the copyright). -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:45, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply. I know many professional photographers will photoshop out a pimple on young stars (or a wrinkle or two on older stars), and that's understandable, but this type of extreme photoshopping seems like it actually distorts the image of the subject (in this particular case the photoshopping completely "flattens" out all the star's features - losing most of the "identifiable" features of his face - including making his nose look about TWICE as wide as it really is, etc), so it seems like a case of extreme photoshopping of the image. I know Wikipedia doesn't allow links to Just Jared Jr., but I felt in this particular case it was necessary to link there in order to show the real photographer's name, so I listed the links without the http// prefix, but anyone reviewing the file and talk page can copy/paste the address and see the dates on the Just Jared Jr. pages (March 2010) and the date on the Facebook link the uploader provided (September 2010) show proof the Just Jared photo was posted about 6 months prior to the photoshopped Facebook image. I'm still learning all the Wikipedia "tags", etc, so can I ask you to please tag the File:Nathan-kress+1.jpg file as nominated for deletion? Or else can you tell me how I should tag it to nominate it for deletion? --- Crakkerjakk (talk) 22:28, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
For an image that is on Commons that is a copyright violation, you can add this template to it. Since I'm an administrator there, I just went ahead and deleted the image. -- Ed (Edgar181) 22:39, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I'll make a note of that tag for the future. I know Wikipedia is relatively quick about verifying copyright/licensing, but I just personally have a pet-peeve about images. Just plain bad/unflattering photos are one thing (I can accept that that's just part of the territory when limited to "free-license" photos), but in cases of extreme photoshopping like this was - it just seems like it verges on distorting/misrepresenting what the subject actually looks like. Thanks again for your help. --- Crakkerjakk (talk) 23:06, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Enphase Energy

To Edgar181:

I'm inquiring about the deletion of a Wikipedia page for a company called Enphase Energy. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Enphase_Energy&action=edit&redlink=1 The deletion appears to have been done by you on Sept. 29, 2008. There's a link to this deleted page from a page titled "Solar micro-inverter," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro-inverter which is the technology Enphase makes. I've been approached about creating a new page for Enphase and, out of respect to the Wikipedia community, need to know why it was deleted to avoid having that happen again. Any insight you can provide would be appreciated. OakleyCA (talk) 18:53, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

The version of Enphase Energy that I deleted was solely a redirect to the article Inverter (electrical). Because the two are not synonyms, nor was there any content about Enphase Energy at the target article, the redirect was inappropriate. If you think that Enphase Energy meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion (see WP:CORP, for example) I have no objection to an article being written about it. Can I ask what you mean by "I've been approached about creating a new page for Enphase"? -- Ed (Edgar181) 19:05, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Image request

Hi Edgar, if you have the time, would you be able to draw a chemical structure of a toxin for me to include in this article? The one I'm interested is shown in figure 2 of this paper which I can email you a copy of if you can't access it. Cheers SmartSE (talk) 13:00, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

I'd be happy to create an image for you, if you don't mind waiting until Monday. If you could email a copy of the article to me, that would be helpful. -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:24, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I've just sent you a copy. SmartSE (talk) 11:22, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
I just created the file, but when I went to upload it I found that a chemical structure drawing for thaxtomin A is already on Commons: File:Thaxtomin A.svg. -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:02, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
Ah crap! Sorry for wasting your time and thanks for finding it! SmartSE (talk) 14:28, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
No trouble at all.  :) -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:29, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

why do you keep blocking me?

There is something very creepy abput all this. I do not have a static IP so there is no pint in keep blocking the IP. When are you going to do something about DMacks? It is accpetbale to change the article fino. Fino is a Spanish not italian. Please at least look at this —Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.100.190.65 (talk) 19:46, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

The blocks are a response to your inappropriate behavior. Administrators will continue to block you, regardless of whether you are using multiple IPs or just one, for as long as you continue your harassment. -- Ed (Edgar181) 20:26, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

I am NOT harrassing anybody and I am getting increasingly frustrated. How is changing the word Italian to Spanish on "fino" harrasment? And it aint my fault that my IP changes so how can I be accused of using multiple accounts? 78.150.193.72 (talk) 20:37, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Your repeated personal attacks on DMacks are completely unacceptable. That is the only reason I have blocked you. Your behavior is determining what happens here. Until you realize that and stop it, nothing is going to change. If you stop making the personal attacks, you won't be blocked for it anymore and you'll have no reason to be frustrated anymore. It's really that simple. -- Ed (Edgar181) 20:59, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

I am not making personal attacks. YOu both do not allow anybody to change anything and then block them if they disagree with you. You should not have such privaleges and you still didnt answer me as to why you reverted the "fino" article and why do you delete my questions? Is there anybody else that can help? 84.13.109.97 (talk) 19:36, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

You have never been blocked because of a disagreement, but only because of your repeated personal attacks another editor. As for the edit you are asking about, if you mean this edit, it didn't seem right because you added the word "Apanish", which I didn't catch that you meant to be "Spanish". Since your edit broke the link, I reverted it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:54, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Deletion MOSEK

Dear Sir, You deleted the MOSEK page and the discussion that was related to it. I noticed that the MOSEK page has been made an deleted before? Could you please explain me the reason for this. In talk, I mentioned that I am ok with the deletion. Im just a student using their free academic license, trying to spread the word. I can even understand if you think its advertisement. Anyway, deletion is ok, but please explain why. So far the people who deleted it, have no relation with Operations Research as far as I can see, so I don't understand the need to delete the page. Thanks! StitchProgramming (talk) 16:20, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

From your comments on the article's talk page, it seemed that you were requesting deletion of the article, which is why I deleted it. Did I misunderstand? -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:15, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately yes, anyway I don't feel like putting the info back on. But I would like to know why people keep deleting MOSEK's page. Its a nice program, and they have free licenses(and support) for students, and they are one of the standards in the OR business. When I made the page I didn't see it was made twice already and deleted both time. When I got the message that it was marked for deletion I saw it was deleted already and so far nobody can tell me why. Anyway, Ill just accept the missing page on mosek and ill try to contribute on other pages. Thanks for your quick reaction. StitchProgramming (talk) 10:50, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

The first time the article was deleted, it was the result of this discussion: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/MOSEK. Basically, other editors did not feel that it met Wikipedia's notability guidelines for inclusion (see WP:N for details). The second time it was deleted, the content was seen as too promotional. The third time, I only deleted it because I thought that was what you were requesting (the author of an article is allowed to request its deletion if he is the only contributor to it). If you would like me to undelete the article, I can do that. Just let me know. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:39, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

That would be great, I will try to improve the content some more when I have more time. Regards, StitchProgramming (talk) 12:54, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

OK, I have undeleted it. I would recommend adding content that demonstrates that MOSEK meets Wikipedia's notability criteria (WP:N), using reliable sources to support it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:00, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

I don't have time today to complete the page, but I quickly inserted some references from 3rd parties that prove its notability. Also, MOSEK is mentioned on a lot of OR related pages already. Pages where you can look are modeling languages for solver engines and related solver engines. Thanks for your quick replies, StitchProgramming (talk) 13:14, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

It shouldn't be taken seriously at all. -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:07, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

Deliver, a WPP Company

Hi. I am new to Wikipedia. Now sure why this was deleted. Can you clarify so I can fix whatever I need to fix in order to repost about this company? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Deliver285 (talkcontribs) 15:26, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

I deleted Deliver, a WPP Company for several reasons. 1) It was a word-for-word copy of text from another website which is marked as copyrighted. (see WP:COPYVIO) 2) The text was highly promotional in tone and came across as mere advertising. (see WP:CSD#G11) 3) The text did not indicate that the company meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines (see WP:CSD#A7 and WP:CORP). If you think the company meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and you can write a neutral article in your own words, you can re-create the article. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:13, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

Mikalah Liviakis

This gentlemen has significance that people would be interested in as well as articles he has written. Why can't he have a listing on Wikipedia?

The first is this legal writing published in the California Initiative Review. Here is the link: http://www.mcgeorge.edu/Research_Centers_and_Institutes/Capital_Center_for_Public_Law_and_Policy_Home/Publications/California_Initiative_Review/Past_Initiatives_(Before_November_2005)/2004_November_Initiatives/_Proposition_67_.htm

The second and more important event:

He was the attorney that confirmed one of the first non-business chapter 11 cases in the Eastern District of California since the bankruptcy code was overhauled in 2005. This case resolved the issue of whether an individual debtor must comply with the Absolute Priority Rule. The Court found that the Debtor was not required to meet the absolute priority rule and the plan was confirmed, allowing the Debtor to retain their estate property without paying unsecured creditors in full. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamfrank82 (talkcontribs) 19:00, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

The article was deleted because it did not include any claim of notability. Based on the additional information you give here, I still don't think this individual meets Wikipedia's inclusion criteria, which you can read about here: Wikipedia:Notability (people). -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:56, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Requested "Revision history" deletion

Hi Edgar. I've contacted you a few times before about vandalism on some of the young Disney and Nickelodeon star's pages. I'm hoping you can do me a favor and erase/delete some edits from a couple of young star's "edit history" pages. The first edit can be seen on the Nathan Kress history page here [1]. And the same editor made a similar edit on the Jennette McCurdy page here [2]. I was hoping you could erase both edits from being viewable on their "history" pages, since these are articles about young teen stars with thousands of youngsters viewing their pages every day. I actually wouldn't mind if this editor was banned from making anymore edits, period, but I'll leave that up to you and the other admins. --- Crakkerjakk (talk) 15:44, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

OK, I have removed those edits and blocked the account. Those are just the types of edits that should be hidden. -- Ed (Edgar181) 18:19, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Indonesian misinformation vandal has returned.

The Indonesian misinformation vandal returned two days ago, using the address 118.96.55.130 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log). Among those he vandalized are Little League Baseball and two of his "favorites," XHGC-TV and List of programs broadcast by Televisa (their previous protection expired recently). It's only today that I discovered his edits. Sorry if I report this just now. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 03:24, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

OK, I semi-protected both articles for six months. The vandalism is relatively low-level and I wouldn't normally protect like this, especially so long, but it since shorter protection of the articles was tried and the problem just resurfaced, it seems worthwhile in this case. -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:10, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

Special:Contributions/Riezky_harbowo

Hi, Edgar.

Can you take a look at Special:Contributions/Riezky_harbowo? User has been warned repeatedly not to vandalize wikipedia articles abbout Miss Universe, but is once again adding Indonesia as a best national costume award winner on Miss Universe 2007[3][4] same edits user made on February 14 several times[5] [6] [7] [8] and on February 16 [9]. User has also vandalized Miss Universe 2006 thrice[10] [11] [12] and Miss Universe 2005[13] [14] even after source denied false information[15]. --John KB (talk) 21:18, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I don't know enough about those kinds of things to tell whether the edits are vandalism or not. Perhaps you can find another admin that might be better suited to helping out in this area. -- Ed (Edgar181) 23:22, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
Reference for 2005 is listed on the article here. For Miss Universe 2006 [16] and for 2007 there was no national costume competition. I personally added the reference for the 2005 competition, and can add more if necessary. Username has been adding the same misinformation since the account was created and a search on Google News prove they're fabricated. None of the sources list Indonesia as the winner in 2007 amd a runner-up in 2005 or 2006. --John KB (talk) 00:32, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi again

Hi again. I've contacted you several times before about vandalism on young actor's bio pages. I'm sorry to keep bothering you, but you've always been helpful, so I have another favor to ask. There's an editor who has been repeatedly editing the Davis Cleveland page with unsourced information. I've tried to be patient and just reverted the edits, but in the last few weeks this editor has become fixated on repeatedly adding unsourced rumors about this child and another young actor (latest example here [17]). I don't have any problems with actors who are gay, but today - just to see if I could verify this alleged "kiss" - I checked the Youtube video this editor has been going on and on about, and there is no kiss that I see, and even if there was, Davis Cleveland and the other actor, Mason Cook are both 8 years old, so even if they ever did have any history together, as this editor alleges, I hardly think it would be notable here. I've just taken a look into this user's editing history and I see their other edits, even when they're not adding same-sex "kissing" rumors, are less than constructive: removing sourced information, adding unsourced information, randomly changing people's places of birth - contradicting the reflinks that have been cited, etc, so I was hoping you might consider blocking this editor from posting, at least for a few months, to provide some time for them to "cool off" - and possibly provide some relief for those of us monitoring the pages this user seems to be obsessed with editing. Thanks. --- Crakkerjakk (talk) 23:43, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

If 74.138.219.176 is the only IP address involved, I think it is probably best to provide the editor with some warning before we considering blocking the IP address. I agree that their editing is disruptive, and they should be warned that if they continue they will be blocked from editing. For now, I have put that page on my watchlist and I'll help out there. And if the the disruptive editing continues, I'll block the IP address. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:00, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I see that since you responded they've been back again making the same edits that have been reverted a dozen times already, but I'll leave it up to you. --- Crakkerjakk (talk) 09:07, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
It looks like another editor has left a warning, and they haven't edited in the day since. It's probably best to just keep an eye on the article and the IP for now. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:28, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
Hi again. First I want to say thank you for watching this editor's edits and I see you've blocked them. Unfortunately, it seems they're back again today using a (slightly) different I.P. address [18], but once again removing information and references, and rearranging the filmography, etc (all basically the exact same edits they made under their now blocked I.P.) I was wondering can you block or template this user again? I would warn him on his page, but I don't know all the right templates. --- Crakkerjakk (talk) 00:42, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

User:Wetsoap

Hello. I encountered this guy today (Wetsoap (talk · contribs)) and not only did he unexplicably reverted valid reverts, but also left insults in my talk page ([19]) as well as that of a well-meaning anon ([20]), not to mention creating a weird redirect to an unrelated movie. I've already asked two admins to take action on him, and while warnings are issued, they took "wait and see" stances. Does this guy warrant a block now or does one have to wait before he acts up again? BTW, judging by when he created the said redirect, Wetsoap's account is at least a week old. Thanks. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 16:10, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

I see that Daniel Case has given this editor a final warning. He hasn't edited since, so it's probably best at this point to wait and see what happens. Any more disruptive editing and he'll be blocked. -- Ed (Edgar181) 23:10, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Youblocked Howard Comunity College??

I was at a computer at Howard Comunity College and when I tried to edit without logging in I got this message:

"Editing from 204.126.132.34 has been disabled by User:Edgar181"

When I tried to move to a different computer, even on the other side of campus, I got the same result. Did you somhow block the entire college?

Please explain,

Thanks. LutherVinci (talk) 17:25, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

That IP address, 204.126.132.34, has been the source of persistent vandalism for at least 5 years and has been repeatedly blocked from editing as a consequence. I placed only the most recent block, which is "anonymous only". Registered users who wish to contribute constructively to Wikipedia will still be able to edit through that IP address. This routine block is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and administrative practice. The extent to which this block affects various computers on campus is determined by the school's networking configuration and is not something I can discern. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:48, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Phosphonite

Hi Ed. The structure you uploaded does not really fit into the chembox IMHO. Do you want to take a look? --Leyo 17:29, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

I think the article and image were fine until the infobox was added. Since the article is about the functional group, the chembox with data for an anion is inappropriate. In my opinion the box should be removed and the article restored to the way it was before. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:41, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
OK, did so. You may want to update the structure (higher resolution, margins equal on all sides) anyway. --Leyo 21:01, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

Same MO. Like I've already implied, I can't go into details as of this minute. I'll tell more when I get back. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 20:33, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

Sorry about the late reply. This IP has now been idle for about 24h, so there probably isn't anything that needs to be done now, but I'll keep an eye on it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:43, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
I know. I only discovered his edits only this morning (my time), around the time I wrote the message above. So yeah, you have to keep watch. I don't know how full your watchlist is, but you might as well keep an eye on Pokemon (anime) and Ash Ketchum articles. As you might have known by now, he has added Pokemon to his vandalism fetish (for a lack of a better term). - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 13:08, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
OK, I have added those two articles to my watchlist and I'll keep an eye on them. -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:00, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Pat on the back

Hi Edgar, Just a quick THANK YOU for blocking the IP that has been continually vandalizing the Chillicothe, Missouri Wiki. I fear our "problem child" will return after the 24hr block wears off, but hope springs eternal as the saying goes. Thanks again & have a great Wiki kinda day! I'll keep an eye on the article and re-block if he returns. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:15, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing TPP

Thanks for fixing the display problems in TPP_thiazolium.svg! It's been bugging me for a long time. mcs (talk) 03:21, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Although I wish Wikipedia would just fix the way it renders text in SVG's for thumbnails. Having to convert it to paths really blows up the file size and makes it harder to change later. mcs (talk) 03:25, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I find it quite annoying too. SVG is ideal for chemical structure drawings, but Wikipedia's rendering problem often reduces the usefulness of this file format. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:19, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Edit war / Vandalism to MercerCounty, Missouri Wiki

Hi Edgar. Could you arrange for a temporary block on editing, or preferrably a block on editing by unregistered users, to the Mercer County, Missouri Wiki? The county was scene of a triple-murder suicide that made national news over the weekend, so I added it as relevant info to the countys history. Apparently someone(s) unregistered in the county doesn't care for it and keeps section blanking. The IP's of the perpatrators are in Mercer County and I suspect one is a dial-up that may bypass the individual IP block. Any help you can give much appreciated! Sector001 (talk) 20:51, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

It seems to me that both you and the other editor are edit warring. The anonymous editor's removal of the paragraph is not necessarily vandalism. In fact, I think there is a reasonable argument to be made that content about a recent news event isn't appropriate for an encyclopedia article. In any case, both you and the other editor should discuss the issue on the talk page rather than continuing to revert each other. -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:05, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks as always Edgar. I value your help & wisdom. I decided to just give it a few days to let emotions cool down. I suspect the unnamed IP was some relative or friend of the victims or shooter. As far as notability, considering that Mercer County has an infinitesimal major crime rate this sad event was quite historic and may have longlasting repercussions. We generally include such "newsy" items as major tornado damage/deaths, plant explosions and such in county or town Wiki's if they are something that has a big impact. I just view this as in that vein. I've had an expansion of the general History category for the county on my "to do" list for months, so right now my plan is to include as a subcat a mention of the event w/o the shooter & victim names. Have a great Wiki kind of day! Sector001 (talk) 18:31, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

OK, sounds fine to me. -- Ed (Edgar181) 19:40, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

user account and page deleted

Hi,

I'm new to wikipedia and was trying to draft a company page. I thought the page was in draft form and therefore not able to be seen/edited by anyone but me. However, I now find that the user name and page I drafted were both deleted, and the deleted page shows up in google search results for the company name. I would like to be able to log in to the account and delete the page as well as the account. I assume you need to unblock me for this to work? The user name is LMI Government Consulting. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jgglaura (talkcontribs) 18:25, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

I blocked the username LMI Government Consulting (talk · contribs) because Wikipedia does not permit usernames to match the name of a company. I have now blanked the talk page User talk:LMI Government Consulting, so it shouldn't show up in Google searches any more (though it may take a few days for Google's cache to disappear). If you would like a copy of the deleted draft article, please just let me know. I'm not sure that it applies here, but for your reference, you may also want to take a look at Wikipedia' conflict of interest guidelines. I hope this helps. -- Ed (Edgar181) 19:39, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I have had the same problem. I have now changed the username to sbratt, would I be able to add the entry now? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sbratt (talkcontribs) 15:06, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

I can't really answer that unless I know the name of the article you are referring to. In general, articles need to meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion (see WP:N) and must be written in a neutral way so that they are not overly promotional. -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:19, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

It was the Britannic Technologies article. I hadn't written much before it was deleted, which I assumed was because the username was too similar to the article title as there are very similar entries that haven't been removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sbratt (talkcontribs) 15:28, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Britannic Technologies was deleted once by User:Boing! said Zebedee because it was nearly empty of content (and therefore met speedy deletion criteria (see WP:CSD#A7), and once by User:JamesBWatson as advertising. Looking at the deleted content, in order for an article about this company to be kept, you'll probably have to show that it has been the subject some type of media attention that is independent of the company (a newspaper article, for example). -- Ed (Edgar181) 16:39, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sbratt (talkcontribs) 09:42, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Oxaziridine edit

Hello,

I don't think that the addition of the chemical info box is consistent with the preexisting article for oxaziridines. The unsubstituted oxaziridine molecule deserves its own page, just as ethylene oxide has a separate page from epoxides. (I know that the user before you added that aspect, but sicne you contributed afterward, I thought you might want to weigh in.) DMelvinKaphan (talk) 00:54, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

I think it could work just fine either as one article or as two separate articles. If you would like to split it (perhaps into oxaziridine and oxaziridines, for example) I have no objection. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:05, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Core Tex Records Entry

Hi Edgar, I was wondering about a page that I was in the process of creating for Core Tex Records. My mistake may have been in creating a user name for the page I wish to create - Core Tex Records User ID:14093182. My purpose for creating the page is to document a part of the Berlin culture and music scene. I have avoided any commercial interests and concentrated on the place as a live music venue and record label. Is there any way I can edit the page and add it from my user name (Thomas Chapman), as I have put in a lot of my private time in researching links and providing some information that I feel is of cultural relevance to modern Berlin. Thanks for reading, Tom —Preceding undated comment added 19:51, 14 April 2011 (UTC).

When I blocked the username Core Tex Records (talk · contribs), I was not making any kind of judgement on whether there should be an article about Core Tex Records or not. If you feel the organization meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion (see WP:N and WP:CORP for example) and you can write a neutral article about it, then I have no objection to you creating the article. -- Ed (Edgar181) 20:29, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for the feedback! --Thomas Chapman (talk) 21:01, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Mefloquine edits by Doc James

Ed,

I am very disturbed by the edits made ont he Mefloquine article by DOc James. Just because he has an MD does not mean he has the expereience to edit this page. He inexpereience as an editor here is really doing disservice to the readers who depend on Wikipedia for the latest information.

I have been posting second source peer reviewed papers that the miltiary and the4 drug comapny want to supress. Dr. Dow even asked me to take his papers to COngress and the VA which i did.

Doc James expereience is only base on his personal use for the drug. This is clearly not a double blind clinical trial, but is using that impression to remove actual peer reviewed papers.

The Brown university paper on Mefloquine conexin blockage was reviewed in the 17AUG2004 edition of PNAS vol 101 no. 33. Whitmans' paper on the marines in Libera was published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygene 83(2) 2010 pp258-265. Yu's paper about vestibular hair cell damage was published by Springer in Neurotox Res 22Sept 2010. Boudreau's paper from 1993 showing hard data on the 7 to 9 weeks was published in Tropical Medicine Parasitol 44(1993) pp. 257-265. Dow's paper discussing his research on the 4 analogs to Mefloquine was published in July 2004 in Antimicrobal Agents and Chemotherapy pp. 2624 and 2632. Dow's rat study was published in the same jouranl in MAR2006 pp 1045-1053. Dow's paper on the disruption of calcium homeostasis by Mefloquine was published in the Malaria Journal in 12 June 2003.

THese are all second source published peer reviewed articles by the top experts in this feild, yet he took all these articles down....

Even Ellen Embry's policy letter was distributed DoD wide to all the troops and you removed it and left the Surgeon General's letter in place. Either Doc James is ignorant to the difference between the two or he has an alterior motive.

If you like I can put you and Doc James in direct phone contact with all the current researchers at the Army and Navy.Moewackit (talk) 21:42, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

It seem that Moe is confused regarding what is a secondary source. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 22:12, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Alright, Doc James, educate me....why is Whitman's paper on the Marines in Libera as published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygene not considered a second source.......

Also, then please tell me why you remove all those papers and then insert Schlagenhauf et. al's paper Schlagenhauf, P; Adamcova, M, Regep, L, Schaerer, MT, Rhein, HG (2010 Dec 9). "The position of mefloquine as a 21st century malaria chemoprophylaxis.". Malaria journal 9: 357 when the co authors are all employees of Hoffman LaRoche adn she is a bought and paid for Roche researcher, and make no statement identifying them as such. So much for neutrality......

Additionally, you towe the Roche company line by saying neuropsych effects are "rare". THey love you for making it this vague and really does a disservice to the public using a very non scientific term like that when it should read that 1 in 10,000 will be HOSPITALIZED and 25% will have neuropsych side effects......Moewackit (talk) 02:03, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

In medicine, a primary source is a journal article written by a scientist or medical researcher and published in a scientific or medical journal. A secondary source will be something like a review article where an expert in the field will summarize the research and findings of multiple researchers within a field. The Wikipedia philosophy is to give precedence to secondary sources over primary sources. This is outlined in the guidelines at WP:MEDRS. The research that you are referring to are primary sources, and the ones that Doc James is using are secondary sources. This is why I think Doc James' edits to Wikipedia's mefloquine article are more appropriate. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:43, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

I under stand now. Thank you. I am an aerospace engineer, not a medical practitioner. I have a request however. It was wrong for Doc James to remove the letter from Ellen Embry that says for all of the Department of defense to switch to Doxy while still leaving up the arm surgeon general's (ASG) letter. The problem that came from the ASG's letter. Since he is army only, then the Air Force, Navy and Marines do not come under his command. Also, in Iraq and Afghanistan, the army can come under a joint command like CENTCOM which may be run by the Air Force or the Navy at any given time. So the joint medical types are able to ignore Embry is the Assistant SECDEF for health. Her letter covers all services. I am a retired Navy commander who served in these wars. I was permannetly disabled from taking this drug. So the reason why I have soent the last 8 years researching Mefloqine and personally interfacing with all the researchers whose papers Doc James removed. I am the one who put up the section on chirality. You should defer to my experience and not Doc James, particularly since he is a Canadian, to determine which of the letters should be posted. Please have him return the Embry letter to the article beacuse it does any US military member a disservice to no have it posted. Moewackit (talk) 16:21, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

That's something that you can address on the article's talk page. From what I have seen from Doc James, he appears to be quite willing to discuss. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:11, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Also, the researchers have essentially defined this drug as a serious neurotoxin that causes permanent long term nerve damage. They are on the verge of declaring specifically what it does in the brain and CNS. So what you are telling me is that this cannot be revealed to the public here in Wikipedia for thier own health and safety until someone writes a second article referencing the work? Most layman now read Wikipedia, and not the Malaria Journal.......Moewackit (talk) 16:21, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia doesn't aim to publish "breaking news" type research, but rather to summarize more established general knowledge. In any case, the issue of neurological effects is addressed in the article starting right in the first paragraph ("serious neuropsychiatric problems have been associated with mefloquine, and the US Army now uses doxycycline as its preferred drug for prevention of malaria") so this aspect of the drug is certainly not being hidden. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:11, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Seems you were blocking him a fraction before I did. I'm not sure if my block has upset yours or reinforced it. I 'hid' his edit at the school article which delayed me on the block... Peridon (talk) 20:29, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

As long as he's blocked, that's all that matters. Thanks for taking care of his edits, too. -- Ed (Edgar181) 20:31, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Deletion of CelsiusPro page and user

Hi Edgar, I understand why the user Celsiuspro has been blocked, as it is representing a company. However, I'd like to find out more why exactly the article has been deleted. CelsiusPro is a company, but what they do is very unique and, to my opinion, worthy of being mentioned. Especially since i see other companies that are more generic having a wikipage. It would be great if you could tell me a bit more on what's wrong with the article, since I'd love to work more on it. And in case you also happen to have the deleted file, it would be really nice if you could send it. Thanks a lot! Kind regards - Rosannevdw 09:19 April 18 2011 —Preceding undated comment added 07:20, 18 April 2011 (UTC).

The article CelsiusPro was deleted by User:Thryduulf. His reasoning was "Unambiguous advertising or promotion", which is one of Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion. This reasoning is related to the content of the article, but does not necessarily mean that an article about CelsiusPro isn't appropriate for Wikipedia if written in a neutral tone. If you have further questions about this deletion, it would be best to contact Thryduulf. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:15, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Circumvention of User Blockage?

Greetings. User 165.138.83.2, listed @ that User Talk page, vandalized Durian, today 18 April 2011. Since I saw no 'unblock' notice, and since you seem attached the the 'block,' I'm contacting you. Contacting that address seems pointless.

Regards, Tapered (talk) 18:56, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

That IP address was given a one year block in March 2010, so it expired a few weeks ago. Since every edit since the block expired has been vandalism, I have re-blocked that IP address - this time for two years. Thanks for letting me know. -- Ed (Edgar181) 19:32, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
You're welcome. I didn't even go back to check to make sure that the block was 2010. Subconscious wishful thinking--trying to roll back the hands of time. (-: Tapered (talk) 01:14, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Questionable file

Hi there, I see a new image has been added to a page that I've been watching and it looks like to me like a copyright violation. Although this editor claims this photo is his "own work", the image appears to be copyrighted by Bob Charlotte at Exposay.com. The article page it's used on gets a lot of daily traffic (thousands of views every day), so I just wanted to drop a note to ask you to review the image before it stays on the article page for very long. Thanks --- Crakkerjakk (talk) 04:35, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

It is clearly a copyright violation. It looks like someone else removed it from the article, and I have now deleted it from Commons. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:23, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

If you have no issues...

...then would it be alright if we unblock User:Green America? Thanks and regards. Wifione ....... Leave a message 16:41, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Yes, that's fine with me. -- Ed (Edgar181) 20:07, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks but I was also wondering...

Thanks for taking action on this User but I had a question about part of this edit. I haven't seen the OW template before but was thinking that it basically deletes the outdated information (even though it does leaves it within the edit/page history). I had read Archiving warnings a while back and it implies that collapsing is preferred. But since the WikiProject isn't an actual guideline, I guess individual editors doing clean-up on an IP's talk page are allowed to deal with the stale warning clutter as best as they can, right? (And thanks again) --Shearonink (talk) 18:32, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

I've seen it done both ways, and as far as I know there isn't a consensus for one or the other. Either works fine, but personally I think simply removing old warnings is "cleaner". I'll take a look at the page you link. Thanks. -- Ed (Edgar181) 23:45, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Chillicothe school students repeated vandalism

Hi Edgar. Saw you had to block that IP again, User: 204.185.70.235. FYI they also vandalized the Trenton, Missouri Wiki today too so I fixed that. I wonder if a case could be made for an indefinite block? On one hand its an institutional IP and would affect a large number of students, but on the other hand the Chillicothe school district seems unwilling to try and stop it. Two weeks ago I e-mailed the district superintendent with a very detailed history of the vandals and asking her to work with the district's webmaster or someone to put a stop to it. Evidently she did not. Have a great Wiki kinda day! Sector001 (talk) 20:08, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Based on the history of edits from that IP address I agree with you that a longer block is a good idea. Indefinite blocks on IP addresses are generally considered inappropriate though. So I blocked the IP for 3 months which will cover the rest of the school year. The IP address can be re-blocked for longer if the the problem resurfaces at the start of the next school year. -- Ed (Edgar181) 23:50, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

protection

Hi ... I was just wondering whether the vandalism at the Kevin Youkilis page is now (again) at a level that calls for semi-protection. Best, and tx.--Epeefleche (talk) 22:57, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

On most pages, I wouldn't consider that much vandalism excessive, but for a BLP that has been targeted before it's probably best to err on the side of being protective. So I have reinstated the semi-protection. -- Ed (Edgar181) 23:57, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Makes sense. Many thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 00:13, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
