Help with a small thing at David Marchick

Hey Dkriegls, happy new year! I have a small thing that I'm hoping you might be willing to help me out with. I just heard from folks at David Marchick's office and, apparently, his date of birth here on Wikipedia is still incorrect. Although the year of his birth is now correct, thanks to your help, his office tells me that he was actually born May 14th, not January 1st.

Unfortunately, I don't have a source for this date, so I'm not sure what the best course of action is. Methinks the best thing is just to remove the date and leave the year of birth, unless you're willing to make the change based on what I've been told (and I'd surely understand if you didn't want to trust that alone). So, I've been thinking about it. I hate leaving a birth date blank once it's out there. The reason is becasue once Wikipedia puts it out there, removing it doesn't correct the error. The internet worm has already propagated it and the only way to correct it is to give the internet worm a new birth date to replace the old. Just one of the curses of Wikipedia being a top information source. I've seen this happen on biographies I've work with. However, my only source is you (OR). But I think our role in propagating an incorrect birthrate is a (BLP) issue that supersedes (OR) in this case. I'm wikilawyering myself here, but it's why I just went ahead and corrected the date. General question

In Wikiproject Cities Guidelines: Notable people it says the list is there for people "born in, or lived significant time in"... what is "significant" in that context?

The problem came up due to an issue of an army officer who served for less than a year (1853-1854) at Fort Humboldt, in Eureka, California. He wasn't famous when he was there. He left the Army ( a career-changing move ) because of his hassles in Eureka. As best I can remember his name has been on the Eureka notables list since before I started editing. Recently someone took him off; I reverted - they got nasty. I decided to stop caring if that particular person was on the list or off the list because of the nasty nature of the arguers against. Later, thinking about it, I decided to go over to the guidelines page and see if I could find someone to ask "what is significant?" What about the case of a serial killer who turned himself in to the police in a particular city and became big news. He's not "from" there, or lived there a long time, but his name is forever associated with the place, should he be on the list or off? And so on... if a child was born in the hospital in Eureka, but the family is from Garberville, is that a Eureka notable or a Garberville notable? So many questions, such a short list of names! You are right. Living in a place is also to "be from" there. To solve the problem I just moved the whole list to a stand alone list. There's a lot more clean up that needs to happen to that list. Great! If you have any questions about format, feel free to ask. I find that when we get these lists into a table format, we get a lot fewer red links being added. Nicknames

I understand, and even agree with your point in an abstract sense, however I think we need the specificity in the city guidelines. This came up during the last few weeks on the Cleveland article, where an editor wants to include "Mistake by the Lake". If you look at the LA and DC pages, you'll see that they also include pejorative names. I just feel that we need to make it as clear as possible, which simply citing NPOV doesn't do. Mentioning that LA and DC both mention pejorative names makes me even more skeptical of using this project to institute a new policy. I would imagine editors at both those cites spent a lot of time considering the inclusion of what constitutes a notable nicknames. Therefor, if you think a policy should be implemented, you should work to build consensus first, because simply editing a policy page will not get you any further with your desired result, even if I hadn't reverted it. I'm not "blocking" you. I'm simply stating that you citing an edit on a policy page that you and only you implemented would not impress other editors to agree with your desired edit. --Dkriegls (talk to me!) 05:51, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

It's not a notable fact about the town. The article you cited was about Club 251 as a whole, not about the town's role. While the town's role is mentioned, Wikipedia policy for what is notable is not met but the limited coverage. If you go to fbi.gov and type in Christopher Lorek you can read FBI Director's Eulogy. Chris was indeed awarded the Memorial Star by the FBI Director at the Memorial Service at the Quantico Marine Chapel on May 21, 2013. Chris did many missions all over the world for the FBI HRT team, which is part of (JASOC) Joint Special Operations Command. Few of these missions are ever made public. Missions that were noted in newspapers: In 2011 Chris was part of team that apprehended a Somali man who prosecutors say is the highest-ranking pirate whom federal officials have ever captured. He was also on team that rescued nine hostage held at federal prison in Talladega, Ala. by Cuban inmates who were rioting. Chris's last mission was in Feb. 2013 in Arkansas where he was on the team that rescued a 5 yr. old boy from an underground bunker where he was being held hostage by a 65 yr. old man. The kidnapper was killed by FBI HRT operators. Chris is indeed an American Hero. FBI HRT are the quiet, humble saviors of our American freedom; their motto serve vitas is the Save Lifes. I completely understand the confusion. While the Medal of Honor was awarded at at PUBLIC ceremony at the Capitol by the National Law Enforcement; the FBI Memorial Star was awarded at a PRIVATE ceremony at the Marine Corps Base Quantico Chapel. This was awarded following the Eulogy, which explains why it is not mentioned in the eulogy itself. While I have a copy of the program and pictures of the Memorial Star presentation, I think you require official confirmation which you should be able to acquire by contacting the FBI Office of Public Affairs,which should confirm that both SA Christopher Lorek and SA stephan shaw both were awarded the FBI's highest award the Memorial Star on May 21, 2013. After reading through an enormous stack of newspaper articles I did find one that notes the Memorial Star awarded to SA Christopher Lorek HR31 It appeared in the National Eagle Scout Association magazine: Eagles Call Official Magazine Eagle Scout [nesa.org/eaglegodandcountry], Spring 2014 It reads: NESA salutes the Eagle Scouts below who serve our nation in all branches of the armed forces: Special Agent Christopher William Lorek, 41, was killed in May 2013 during a maritime counterterrorism exercise off the coast of Virginia. The Hostage Rescue Team is a part of the Critical Incident Response Group, a military-like unit that serves alongside Navy Seal Team 6 and Army Delta Force as a part of the Joint Special Operations Command. Lorek who earned Eagle rank in 1985, was awarded the FBI's highest award, the Memorial Star. Also [2] of honor Christopher Lorek's name was included on the FBI Wall of Honor. A Question

My bad, my cut and paste failed. The person who was changing the U.S. Grant stuff on the Eureka Notables list, made edits to Humboldt County adding Whipple and Viale and Grant to the county as well, but Whipple was mostly in Arcata, and Viale is buried in Eureka with no other connection to Hum Co. I don't want to start an edit war especially sick, but could you take a look at Humboldt County, California and its history and tell me what you think? So sorry for the mis-paste on the other image. You said that Whipple was mostly in Arcata, California, I'm not sure how that disqualifies him from being listed on the Humbolt Country page. Isn't Arcata in Humbolt? As for Viale, if someone is buried in a town, other than in something like a military cemetery, I assume they lived there. Just my assumption. Did I do something wrong?

On the Notables of Eureka, CA, I was trying to find photos of everyone and had gotten as far as Betty Chinn (after finding a US-gov picture online). Then I had to go back to work for a couple days and couldn't add the rest of the pictures. I was just trying to copy your Park Ridge, Illinois format! Did I do something wrong? Great Job. Those tables can be a bit tricky the first time around. But you nailed it! Just needed some capitalization of the sentence fragments (WP:Manual of Style/Lists#Bulleted and numbered lists). Finish out the rest of the list and then get more detailed with the information and this list will be one of the better ones out there. A good lead section would round it out nicely. My 16 year old son needshelp

I've been researching and researching. I'm running out of options. Such a long story, in short I believe my son is highly psychic yet based on his journals from last year he appears to have experienced possession. It's as if they are trying to turn him away from all that's good. Hard to grasp, I'm tired of the psychiatric route amongst so many other factors. This does not appear to be an easy fix. He needs help. Who can I contact!

Your first reasonable step would be to try to take the child to some form of psychological evaluation. Particularly for children in early puberty, when the brain is developing most rapidly, it is possible for them to have access to data we aren't aware of, and, also, mentally make connections between ideas that might not be considered connected by others. Speaking as someone who has been called, at various times, "psychic" in some form or other, I know that I almost certainly am not, but just am a bit more observant than others, a bit more intelligent (IQ at genius level) and capable of a bit more intuitive luck than many others. It may well be, and I think likely is, the case that your child is similar. If that is the case, then the concerns would be almost purely behavioral, and could probably be resolved as easily as such behavioral issues ever get resolved. Exorcism is always a last step, particularly within the Catholic church, as is said in the article linked to, which tend to take the process more seriously than some other newer groups, and only to be taken when all other steps have already been tried and there seems to be strong evidence of some sort of external influence. At this point I think the best thing you can do is try to set up the child for a psychological evaluation and see what the results of that are. John Carter (talk) 16:30, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Art Spiegelman article and Ladybelle Fiske

Hi-- Perhaps this is the wrong place to write to you, not sure. Art Spiegelman, whose page you said you felt I was not notable enough to merit mention on, had a long and intense relationship with me and with Quarry Hill. If you look at his new book, Co-Mix, there is a strip called "Grain of Sand" comics. Down the side of one of the "I"s in this title are the words, which may need to be read with a magnifying glass"-- "I love you, Ladybelle."

There are also many photos, quite a few of them presently available on FAcebook (run a Google search on Art and me and look for Images and you will probably see them) showing Art and me together.

Our relationship was probably the closest thing Art had to a marriage before he met Françoise Mouly (while he and I were again engaging in a renewed love affair, but I didn't know of her till later, when we became friends). Many of our mutual friends would affirm that I was a profoundly notable person in his life. I am not sure how to "prove" this, or even if it's worth bothering with, though I am working on a memoir in which he is mentioned. While I would personally have no problem adding a mention of your relationship, Wikipedia guidelines are biased against non-traditional relationships, and another editor would just delete the entry. This bias stems from our desire for vitrification; and sadly, traditional relationships like marriages are easier to verify. While I believe you when you say you were more than just a girlfriend, an "I love you" in print and some Facebook pictures are not enough to meet WP:Verifiability. I can sympathize with your frustration as I spent more than a decade trying to convince people that my lover was more than just a "girlfriend". Long ago editors decided that mentioning non-notable girlfriends was not encyclopedic information. What you would need: A mention of you in some significant way in one of his works (not identified by a pseudonym). What is significant? Not just a story about dating you, but about you being some significant part of his life. I know this is still vague, but if you find something, bring it to me and I will put give you some feedback, and put it in if I think it is proper. If you think I am being too timid on this point, feel free to petition another editor for help, but I will always be happy to review any edits you wish to have made. Cheers. HI Dkriegls. The last thing I can think of to say re Art Spiegelman and myself is that he has already noted me by name in MAUS (the Prisoner on the Hell Planet section). He says, "I had just spent the weekend with my girlfriend, Isabella. (My parents didn't like her.) Indeed, there was some question in both our minds whether his mother had (horrible!) killed herself because she disapproved of me as a "Goy) (My father was Jewish, but my mother was not). Along with all the other things that Art has said and done to mention me-- the mention of Quarry Hill and my father and "my girlfriend" in MetaMaus, pp 24-25, and all the other stuff, I feel he has made a case that I was an important person in his life. The fact is, no one else was with him when he went mad (as a lover) or when his mother died. We spent that year together and moved in together in Brooklyn in the fall. We spent the next year in a dark, Manson-like (no killing) commune in New York. Many friends of mine would be glad to affirm this relationship. I believe Wikipedia is too fussy about this stuff, whether it's that the editors are fearful that they will be sued or what. It seems obvious to me that I was important to him-- otherwise, why does he keep mentioning me?

I am writing a book about my life in which he will not be a major character, but he will exist in a space appropriate to that which he did occupy in my true life. We were friends till the mid 1990s. Thirty years! My husband and I took care of his kids on numerous occasions. I know that nothing I can say or do will convince Wikipedia that I was a significant person, but I just want to state it here because it is true. Thanks and good luck,

Greetings and thanks for your many good edits. I take issue with some of your recent edits to List of people form Ann Arbor, Michigan, along with your categorical statement: "Note: · Only people who already have a Wikipedia article may appear here. This establishes notability. · The article must mention how they are associated with Ann Arbor, whether born, raised, or residing. · The fact of their association should have a reliable source cited. · Alphabetical by last name please. · All others will be deleted."

While a WP article is evidence of notability, it is not the only evidence. Reliable third-party references may provide the same, according to WP:CITY and WP:LISTPEOPLE. I have tried to help with "inclusion guidelines" on the talk page for the list in question: "While a WP list should not include non-notables, it need not be limited only to those with Wikipedia articles. Many well-maintained lists allow individuals with reliable third-party references (NOT their own web pages or blogs). See WP:LISTPEOPLE As the header states, the list should not include those who merely attended the U of M (There is another list of University of Michigan alumni), but it can include faculty or alumni whose work and fame are associated with Ann Arbor. And please add inclusive dates, at least for deceased individuals!"

Among your recent deletions, artist Emil Weddige and organist Marilyn Mason were and are certainly Ann Arbor notables. Finn Froding (talk) 12:15, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

I don't disagree with any of that. The citation for Emil Weddige was this UoM faculty page. It makes no claims about the individual that meet WP:Notable people criterion. A quick google search produced no WP:Reliable sources. If you know the subject well and think they are notable, it shouldn't be too hard to find a good reference. Feel free to add the name back if you find one. The citation for Marilyn Mason was broken so I could make no assessment of their notability by it. I did a little digging and just found a Wikipedia biography for her though (my Google search wanted to go to the rock artist, so I didn't see it before).
