Hey Riley! Thanks for these thoughts. You don't have to apologize - not your fault. I don't feel comfortable sharing my first user name. I'm still trying to decide whether to do a final follow up on a situation or just not bother.

All that said, like I said, thanks for the welcome. --Charlie Inks (talk) 16:04, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia: check out the Teahouse! edit

Hello! Charlie Inks, you are invited to the Teahouse, a forum on Wikipedia for new editors to ask questions about editing Wikipedia, and get support from peers and experienced editors. Please join us! Sarah (talk) 00:22, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you edit

Thank you for the warm welcome, Sarah. I'll check out the Teahouse. I think given that my experience was not exactly filled with sunshine and light the first time around, I'll be looking for a mentor this time. It took for ever to find it, but I have found that page. I just need to find time to go through the people offering their time and approach one or two and see.

In the meantime, if I have other questions, thank you for offering to help me. I'll ask on your talk page, as you suggest.

Have a great weekend :) --Charlie Inks (talk) 16:00, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Also, I've just seen that you've had troubles with previous experiences on wikipedia. I'd rather these sort of troubles didn't happen, but I'm sure they do. Unfortunately, being one of the males here, I am likely to miss situations where gender problems occur based on male attitudes.
What I can tell you though is that that I'm an administrator on the encyclopedia and have a lot of experience and so depending on what happend, I may be able to help. What's more, I've mentored a lot of new editors through the trials and tribulations of starting to edit the encyclopedia along, so I might be able to help there too. Either way, let me know if there's anything I can do. If you'd like to talk about your previous experiences, but feel uncomfortable sharing it on wiki, you're also welcome to email me, using the email user functionality. Also, I've answered your follow up question at the teahouse ;) WormTT(talk) 12:01, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your reply Charlie! Whether you choose persue things or just go ahead and move along with your time here is wholly up to you. I do know that Wikipedia is dominated by men, ~93%, and anything we can do to improve the situation for women should be looked into, it's been mentioned as a goal of the Wikimedia Foundation, the not-for-profit company who own Wikipedia. Having said that, generally when I get myself involved in a problem, I look at it from all sides and explain things to all parties - I like to go for the win-win factor! It might be that it just means me having a little chat with both sides would be enough to prevent future problems.
In any case, feel free to drop any questions on my talk page - they'll get answered there, even if it's not by me (I've got a lot of people who keep an eye on my talk page). If you want a really fast response though, I've always found the Teahouse to be a really friendly place to go. WormTT(talk) 14:42, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
As requested, your sandbox is now merged into the article. I've also blanked the sandbox, so you can start work there again. If you ever need a new sandbox, just search for it in the wikipedia search box and it'll give you the option to create the article. So for example, if you put "User:Charlie Inks/Another Sandbox" into the search box, it'd offer you the chance to create the page. Good luck with the future endeavours! WormTT(talk) 16:24, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Charlie Inks. I left an answer for you at the Teahouse talkpage. Cheers, --Rosiestep (talk) 18:14, 5 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Are you referring to this? You may wish to ask for protection at Wikipedia:RFPP, but it seems to me that the user was being constructive.

SwisterTwister talk 01:49, 16 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello SwisterTwister, I hear you, but no, it wasn't helpful. Why? Because I was in the middle of working on it, and as a result of what happened - I completely lost my train of thought. I got a message saying that there was an editing conflict and that none of my changes would be saved because someone else had made a change to the page. I'm not a coder. I'm not a geek. The message at the top said, unless I compared BOTH and did some moving around of text, I'd loose the whole page! I can't tell you what my anxiety level was - because I'm dyslexic, and I literally couldn't see what was being changed. I've been working on this for days. A lot of effort is going into it. Maybe there are other reasons wikipedia makes all content changeable by all editors all the time - I do understand the principle - but it seems to me creatively, intellectually, this is a big mistake when it comes to user sandboxes. Username:sandbox creates the impression that there's some kind of control you excercise over developing ideas in a space that other people can read, but can't change - while you're working on it. I think that's perfectly reasonable, but I guess not for the people running wikipedia. Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep it in mind - but if you know any powers that be or can recommend a place where I can post this suggestion, I'd appreciate it. It's enough for me to put in citations and the like - split screens with coding, I'm totally out of my depth on that.... Not all of us have the ability to code and literally see the way every body else does. Thanks, --Charlie Inks (talk) 17:42, 16 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Charlie! One thing you could do is create User:Charlie Inks/Sandbox.js (or add .js to the end of any subpage). That way, only administrators and yourself could edit it. On another note, when you do receive an edit conflict, the information you tried to add will appear at the bottom of the page in a box. You can copy that information and then you will still have it. On another note, hopefully editing will become a lot easier in the next year or two. Try out mw:VisualEditor:TestRyan Vesey Review me! 17:56, 16 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi Ryan, I really really appreciate this! Cos I can't tell you how stressful that situation was - and, every respect to the other user, I'm pretty sure that's not what that user intended at all.... As you may know, dyslexia can seriously play havoc with visual perception (for me it's particularly bad with numbers (citations without templates can get a bit hilly for me, depends on the day) and colours, lines (line breaks, certain types of codes) are very hard for me to see sometimes too). And finding stuff through the wikipedia portal/style guide: not easy sometimes, stuff is put in what doesn't - to me at least - seem logical places. But that's another story. Anyways, that's what really freaked me out - because the instruction said everything below the line will be deleted - or something like that. And what I saw was all my work was below the line! Dyslexia or...? Don't ask me friend, cos I don't know. I was sweating machine gun bullets ...I thought the whole page was about to go up in smoke. I will check out that link you've posted here later this week - and your suggestion about adding .js (Hopefully I can develop enough geek genes to do that - lol) I totally understand the principles of collective editing, but I'm doing this in my own sandbox because mostly I'd like to work with all the material I've collected (I've been doing A Lot of research). You know: think, try things, change things, see what it all means when it's put together. Another editor - sorry I can't remember the guy's name just now - had suggested I do this (in my sandbox) because I know some of it will be controversial. His suggestion to do that and post a link to Jimi's wiki's talk page once it's ready for review by other editors who watch that page, made a whole lotta sense to me. I totally defer to The Wisdom of Men Who Have Had Full Spectrum Lightening Thunderbolt Moments of Colourful Enlightenment on Wikipedia because All of You Are So Experienced! Seriously. :D I didn't plan on contributing quite this much to Jimi's wiki - it's just kinda happened. I can't stop now because I keep finding more stuff that's I do think is relevant and/or finding errors in his wiki (some of which I still haven't had time to correct - but I've got all the citations.) And Jimi, the man, the human being - not the musician alone - is entirely worth the time and the effort.
All to say, Thank You, Ryan, for clearing a bit more of the path for me to walk through the...purple haze.... purple haaaze..... :D Cheers,

--Charlie Inks (talk) 19:34, 16 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Swister Twister,

I took another look at that link you posted here of the changes made by the user. That information - 1968 Artist of the Year, Billboard Magazine - was already in the table, with a citation. Did I miss something? Cheers, --Charlie Inks (talk) 21:45, 16 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Teahouse talkback edit

Hi Charlie! I replied to your post at the Teahouse; however, it's only a very partial reply because I don't know the answer to the majority of your questions. I gave you some information about the gendergap mailing list. Ryan Vesey Review me! 02:28, 21 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ryan! Thank you for this and for those links! :) I posted my response at the Teahouse. I'm glad you stopped by here too because I did followup on some other suggestions you'd made to me about coding. I did check out your visualeditortest - I'm sorry I couldn't quite figure out where to leave feedback. (I now I'm pathetic. :) I checked it out twice, and it was amazing to see how the content had changed the second time around. You are clever, aren't you? :) But here's some feedback: I did find it easier to read and do stuff using the editor. The layout, the way you've designed it, it was the simplicity that worked for me - and because of my dyslexia, scanning it visually - the layout and the colours, I found it very easy to follow. Re creating sandbox pages that other editors cannot edit, I also tried out your suggestions for that. (creating pages with .js at the end) It was really easy (I'm always amazed when I can do stuff like this. :) But the interface didn't work for me because the words went right off the edges out of the grey box so I ended up not using it. I like this type of interface more because its wysiwyg. In the end, I've just put a note at the top of the pages I'm working on that I'd prefer no one else edit. I realize - as another editor said on here I think (dashboard feedback) - that I can ask for protected pages. I don't know - seems to me like that's going a bit too far. So far, people have respected the note :) Isn't that great? Anyways, hope you're doing well. :) Take care & cheers :) --Charlie Inks (talk) 11:36, 22 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hey Ryan - one last thought here, if you'd like me to post some feedback on your visualeditortest in the right place (! i.e. not on my talk page! :) just give me a link, and I'd be very happy to do that, yeah? 'K, cheers :)--Charlie Inks (talk) 11:50, 22 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hey Charlie, I'm afraid I missed this comment. Just to note, I had nothing to do with the creation of the visual editor (I only wish I was that smart). You can leave feedback at mw:VisualEditor/Feedback. The discussion style on MediaWiki is a bit different from the English wiki. It uses threaded discussions and you don't need to leave a signature. Just click start a new discussion, give it a section heading, put in your content, then hit save page. Ryan Vesey 16:15, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hey Ryan! You wish you were that smart?! You and me both! Hey no problem re missing the comment. I'll followup on this and post some feedback there, yeah? Cheers :D Charlie Inks (talk) 16:36, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Women on Wikipedia edit

Hey Charlie, I saw your message on the Teahouse boards and the thought-provoking discussion that followed. I just wanted to say hi as a fellow female editor! I totally understand how much of a "boys' club" Wikipedia can be, but if you'd like, I can point you in the direction of some other experienced female editors I know. I'm sure any of us would be happy to help you with anything, maybe collaborate on a project, or just talk. Again, welcome to Wikipedia, and I really do hope you stay. All the best, Keilana|Parlez ici 17:22, 22 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Keilana, Thank you for so much for stopping by here and for your thoughts! You're sweet! I've been doing a lot of thinking about all this...still not sure what I'm going to do. I haven't checked back to see if there was any other comment at the Teahouse - and frankly, no, I won't be doing that today - I don't have the energy (This can be a very draining place.). I'd love to be connected with some other female editors to be able to talk privately. I appreciate that wikipedia has its problems (from what I've read in the last few days, on multiple fronts), but as I made fairly clear, I think, at the Teahouse, I don't really care about wikipedia. What I care about is the impact it's having on peoples' heads.
I'm not a girlie-girl at all: no interest in Kate Middleton's wedding dress, makeup (although I did paint my stubby nails a funky shade of purple to channel some Jimi to log back in here - just sayin'), or creating Sex-in-the-city articles (I actually have never seen an entire episode.).
Was it a mistake for me to randomly happen to be reading Jimi Hendrix's wiki one night and start finding gaps and errors in it? I'm willing to bet - and maybe I am wrong - no one else who's edited that article has funky purple nails right now.... Pray for me, Sister :D
Especially as a woman of colour, why would I want to volunteer my time and join a community where I spend hours, days, weeks, or longer, researching something in detail and finding sources, write about it or add it in to an existing article, help reference other peoples' material (which I do) and then well, you know can happen.... It's different for girls. And different in a whole other way for coloured girls.
I don't have the automatic authority given to a straight/straight/acting white man, now do I? I didn't want to be in a closet this time, and I wonder what the price tag of that choice will be?
What's the company line for answers to these types of questions, I wonder.... When wikipedia's leadership is reincarnated, I hope the Goddess makes the individuals women with skin thinner and darker than the coverings on an over-ripe tropical fruit, so maybe they get a taste of what life's like for "the rest of us" when they come back to The Forest.
Seems like wikipedia's official approach is all about (proto-feminism/proto-anti-racism) which was how the people left out (I'm saying this loosely - it's not absolute) have to fix the problems of the majority. Which regular women have got time for that? Really. I've got my own life to deal with - which is more than enough, thanks.
But the thing is I do care about Jimi Hendrix! (He's trouble!) It's all Jimi's fault. And I'm not even a hardcore fan. :) (Or wasn't till this happened.) This man's music was the soundtrack to my girlhood. His wiki is mostly about "Gi-Tar hero" - what about the rest of him? It's all of those parts of Jimi, all his experiences, that made him such an astonishing artist, it seems to me. That's how I feel about it. Is that a "female perspective"? Is this where my contributions get deleted?
Anyways, if there's a way for us to talk privately I would really love that. I'd love it.
I'll leave you with a little tune, I adore. (Please note all the purple lighting! :D Who would've thought this would work? In case that's not your style, try this - Sister Sledge.... Hopefully one of them will work for you, yeah?
From a woman who never even wanted to be a girlie-girl,

--Charlie Inks (talk) 21:38, 27 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi again! It's good to hear from you - and I can't begin to tell you how much I adore Pavarotti! :) I'm not much of a girly-girl either...I don't believe I've ever touched an article about fashion on purpose. My thing is astronomy - and yeah, it's really frustrating to just have your stuff removed without good explanation. That happened to me a couple times when I first started out and it sucked. I don't know if that "female perspective" is why your writing gets removed, but I do know that this place needs to be friendlier to women. If you wanna talk in private, you can email me at keilanawiki gmail.com. I'd love to hear from you! All the best, Keilana|Parlez ici 15:41, 30 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Your userpage and purple edit

Hey, Charlie, I see that you seem to want a purple userpage. Well, you'll be glad to know that that's possible! Try copying and pasting:

{| style="width:100%; background:#993399;"
|style="color:#FFFFFF"|

at the very top of the user page, and it'll give you a purple background with white text. You can change the colors around, too: try looking at this chart to see the different possibilities. All you need to do is change the numbers in the above thing to the numbers that match the color you want; change 993399 to change the color of the background, and FFFFFF to change the color of the text. (You'll see that those two numbers already match up with the color values on the chart.) Hope this helps! Writ Keeper 15:34, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hey Writ_Keeper! Thanks for this! :D I've got a couple of people with suggestions about how to make my user page purple - so I'll have to check it out! Love the user name - such a variety on here, yeah? :D Cheers! Charlie Inks (talk) 15:45, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
*facepalm* So you do! Knew I should've read the rest of the talk page... It's actually kind of funny: I originally created this account purely as an excuse to use this as a username. There are some really good usernames floating around; one of my favorites is User:Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, which always irresistibly reminds me of this picture. Writ Keeper 15:51, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
You like it huh? Well it kinda just happened. Although Charlie is a name I've loved for some time now. Love the picture! How do I know there's somethin' that guy's wearing that is purple, and it's gonna be that kinda of Purple the Pope wears once in a while, you know? The feathers or the sash, eh? :) Or maybe, it's His MousTache! You don't need to waste any time reading my talk page! I babble on, sometimes, there's stuff in there about purple.... That's all. :D Charlie Inks (talk) 16:02, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hey Writ Keeper! I tried your code to turn my user page purple - and It Worked! I'm just surprised that I could do this - I know it was cut and paste - but computer coding and I really are from very different planets.... And just looking at numbers and letters with symbols starts to make me very nevous. Thanks again, yeah?! This has made My Day! :D

Google links edit

Hey Charlie, great work at Jimi Hendrix, thanks again for putting in the effort to improve the article. I had a little tip you may enjoy:

When we add a google link much of the code at the end of the link is excess, for example, I see you added this url as a source: http://books.google.ca/books?id=UlDZcIpBYuoC&pg=PA107&lpg=PA107&dq=curlers+1966+jimi+hendrix&source=bl&ots=EVBT4_MBGx&sig=J8Z69TzAJhAD4htDaXTkW2F5P38&hl=fr&sa=X&ei=_YgZUML7DoiN6QGkm4DQDQ&ved=0CDQQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=curlers%201966%20jimi%20hendrix&f=false

This can be trimmed down to: http://books.google.ca/books?id=UlDZcIpBYuoC&pg=PA107&lpg=PA107&dq stopping right after the first occurance of "&dq". This helps clean up the mark-up a bit, its not written in stone to my knowledge but I find any excess data that can be trimmed from the mark-up typically should. Again, this is just a suggestion that I thought you might appreciate. Cheers!~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 21:11, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hey GabeMc! Thank you for this suggestion and for stopping here! I will do my best to include what you're suggesting here. Just want you to know though, I'm not a coder and I'm dyslexic - not making excuses here, but just letting you know: w/out templates, I don't think I would've been able to even contribute as much here. Your suggestion is totally reasonable. I always get worried that the link won't work, and sometimes I forget to check the citation to make sure I got it. You know? I'm like you: I care about what's said about Jimi on here - it's that simple. I've got time right now - not for too much longer - but I do right now, so I'm happy to do this. Seriously, you know? His music was part of the soundtrack to my childhood, and I'm getting to learn so much about him. No need to keep thanking me. Somewhere maybe Jimi's in his embroidered sky-blue kimono, not high, not drunk, not surrounded by anyone trying to take another piece out of him. He's just writing another lyric or working on a new riff, and having a Good Laugh about all this wikipedia stuff, yeah? :D Anyways, thank you GabeMc for stopping by! It's great to hear from you! :D Charlie Inks (talk) 21:30, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, his music was part of the soundtrack to my childhood as well, a big part. I hear you on the dyslexia issue, it runs in my family as well, so don't worry about the excess code now, just do what you feel comfortable doing, your improvements are a huge net asset to the project and I don't want you to get hung-up on or discouraged by the minutia that is perhaps best left for others. As I said, I would love to pitch in some edits so I'll be looking at ordering a few books in the next couple of days. Great work once again! Cheers! ~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 21:36, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
You know - it's great to hear you say this! Thank you! If you do order books, btw, certainly, I'd highly recommend Steve Roby & Brad Schreiber's book and definitely, Charles S. Murray's Crosstown Traffic - he's a very gifted writer and he's done a lot of really deep thinking about Jimi's music. I'm wondering whether you're thinking about ordering Charles Cross's book. I'm only asking cos he's the guy who said (wrongly) that Jimi claimed to be gay to get out of the airborne. I've almost finished it. How much of the rest of it is reliable, I wonder? Anyways, if you find any other books - other than Leon's book and Al's of course ( I still haven't read either of them.) - that You think would be good to read, please do let me know. I'm completely hooked! Other than online research, I'm real-time reading fairly randomly, based on what I'm researching. In fact, I found a Kid's Book about Jimi! Can you Believe It?! It's Gorgeous and Such A Testament to the poetry that Jimi could create! I keep meaning to add it to the "further reading" section. It's on my growing list of things to add. It's called, Jimi: Sounds Like A Rainbow, by Gary Golio, illustrated by Javaka Steptoe. What would you make of this book? After reading so much about his childhood, for me, this book was frankly a Relief. A Relief b/c in addition to Jimi himself who somehow, went on to become this astonishing musician who would do all the great things he did, here's someone else who found the stream of joy in Jimi's horrific childhood... and Wrote About It and made a Beautiful Book! :D Cheers, Charlie Inks (talk) 22:11, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hey thanks for the tips, I'll be sure to check out the books you mentioned later and I'll share my thoughts after I have done that. The children's book sounds great, I'll have to order it. Which templates are you currently using? Are you familiar with sfn or harvnb? Take a look at Paul McCartney or Pink Floyd for examples of how to apply these templates. I find this to be by far the easiest way (for me anyway) and it makes sourcing things a breeze. When you have time, take a look and let me know what you think. Cheers! ~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 22:18, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
It's entirely my pleasure Gabe! I'm definitely not a Jimi expert, literally, discovering, as I go along. The kids' book truly - is so Worth It! If you love Hendrix, you'll probably love this book. I use the templates in the wikipedia standard editing interface. I'm completely out to lunch re even figuring out that there may be other templates? lol I'll check out those links you've given me and get back to you for sure. Cheers! Charlie Inks (talk) 22:49, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

sfn template edit

For example:

Starting in November 1966, the band adopted an experimental attitude during recording sessions for the album.[1]

  • Lewisohn, Mark (1992). The Complete Beatles Chronicle:The Definitive Day-By-Day Guide To The Beatles' Entire Career (2010 ed.). Chicago Review Press. ISBN 978-1-56976-534-0. {{cite book}}: Invalid |ref=harv (help)

So that after entering the book data in the refs list, one need only write {{sfn|Lewisohn|1992|p=1}} thereafter to cite to the book. While there are many acceptable templates, I find this one minimises my all too frequent spelling mistakes. ~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 23:03, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

This is very helpful. Cos I know I went to I can't remember where just now - the Village Pump? the Style Guide? - to look for how to cite a source multiple times, and it seemed to be basically saying what not to do. So this is really helpful! Thanks for this! I'll definitely use it - cos I'm finding there are a few "greatest hits" sources that I keep going back to but I don't know how Not To Create A Coding Mess...but yes, I want to make sure the citation is bullet-proof, right? :D Okay.... Thank you Gabe! :D Take care, yeah? Charlie Inks (talk) 23:25, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Jimi Hendrix and summary style edit

Hey Charlie! The Jimi Hendrix article is a bit long (and was too long even before you started editing). It's currently 175,556 bytes. It currently contains 82 kB of prose. We have a guideline called Wikipedia:Article size that recommends splitting any article with over 60 kB of prose. You can create some articles in this process, since it should follow the summary style. Give some information in the Jimi Hendrix article and include all of the information in a new article. I'm not entirely sure how to split this one though. Perhaps a Tours of Jimi Hendrix article would be appropriate. In addition, I just found Timeline of U2. Maybe you could create a Timeline of Jimi Hendrix. The U2 article also splits of their awards and achievements. It may be possible to do so with Jimi Hendrix. Ryan Vesey 18:01, 3 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hey Ryan! Thanks for getting in touch about this. I've thought about this myself for some time now, b/c I haven't even added all the things that I'd like to propose be added in here. There are several key things that are missing from this article, but I do see what you're saying about length. I don't have time right now, anyways, to create a JH Timeline, although that certainly sounds like something of great value. I'm going to look into the links you've suggested here and perhaps take this to the T-House and see if anyone else has other suggestions. In the meantime, you may want to check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:LongPages I appreciate I'm biased - I care about how Jimi Hendrix is portrayed here - but compared to 394,120 bytes on Dungeons & Dragons(!) or ‎Glossary of cue sports terms ‎(324,113 bytes) or ‎List of other fictional United States Presidents ‎(360,613 bytes), an article about a man who is widely considered to be the world's greatest guitarist may be few more relevant bytes? Cheers, Charlie Inks (talk) 18:20, 3 August 2012 (UTC
I think you would actually be doing the world's greatest guitarist more justice by splitting up the information intomultiple articles. That way, you could go into more detail! I will try to read the whole article sometime this weekend and come up with some suggestions. hajatvrc @ 18:31, 3 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hey Hajatvrc, Isn't this the type of thing that everyone watching the page should decide? Isn't this where "Consensus" comes in? Just asking. I won't be writing those pages alone (Do you know how much work that would be?) I've been trying so hard to conserve as much of what's in the article already b/c other editors created it. And I know what can happen in this environment - I've already died once. I'm not up for hazing. As you know - from revision history - I've added citations to other ppl's work.
Just try and understand that, please. Thanks. And ppl keep telling me you can't just remove stuff b/c it's unreffed. To me, hey anyone wants to give me permission, I can cut that article down by at least 500-800 words right now, possibly more, if you think it's okay to splice off into other articles (For instance, why not take out all TJHE stuff that's not related to him personally out and stick in the TJHE article? It could get tricky cos they're not so easy to pry apart, but if there's a link and a written direction, ppl will find it.). Sure I could do all that, but will I be alive at the end? And won't that be breaking all kinds of rules? Just asking cos all these rules seem awfully contradictory to me sometimes.... Charlie Inks (talk) 01:18, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
I noticed this thread and I would like to weigh-in. 1) Charlie is making great efforts to clean-up a very messy article, that should be commended. 2) Charlie is a relatively new user and I think some of the suggestions above could possibly be a bit overwhelming for a new user. They certainly would have been for me anyway. 3) Lets be careful not scare off new users still learning how to improve articles. Sure, the Hendrix article is too large right now, but as its a very long way away from FA, is this really an issue to push onto Charlie at this time? It sounds like because the article is currently too large that Charlie should be discouraged from adding material. I disagree in principle because how do you make the judgement that the material Charlie is adding is not appropriate for the article? How do we know the article isn't too large due to other excess material that needs to be removed? To assume that no new material can or should be added to an article that is too large is overly simplistic thinking. Perhaps Charlie is adding the appropriate material yet much other inapporpriate material should be removed. Anyway, as I said, Charlie is a newer user and I think the above suggestions may only serve to discourage their improvement of the Hendrix article, so I strongly advise caution in that regard. ~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 00:17, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also, consider using the notes section to remove important and/or interesting but excess detail from the article body. Try: {{refn|group=nb| This material is important enough to retain but is better off in the notes.(1) }} ~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 01:44, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi Gabe! Thank you for weighing on this! There's more rules in this place than... I can't think of anything clever right now, but you know what I'm saying. I can't break them all or even one, I'm sure, w/ the number of ppl following my every move on this site, but WOW... where does the content in all these rules get to Just BE? Thank you for acknowledging I didn't write this article. (The sentence about Al's six fingers wasn't mine - I just copy edited it.) Yes, I've added content, and where I've been able to and felt comfortable, I have deleted stuff. Anyone can check the record and see. You've been really generous to tell me how much you've valued my work - and that meant (and continues to mean) a lot to me b/c this - rock/pop/blues artists - are part of what you edit.
I've decided I'm not adding any content to Jimi's article till I get a sense of what else I've contributed substantively will be deleted (No, I'm not attached to every word, but yes, I have limits to what I'm willing to endure this time. I've already died on wikipedia once. This is my resurrection.). It takes time and effort to research something, understand what it's saying, what it means, and write it up, with citations and coding.... If someone else has time to volunteer their time, their mind, their energy for to do all this and watch it all get deleted - hurray for wikipedia. I don't. My work isn't stone tablets, but - it's all sourced, w/ live citations that ppl can look up. Thank you also for noting how the issue of length being raised with me now is discouraging. Because, yes, it is. Thus far, the content I've added does add important things that was missing, little details like six Grammys for instance and researching and correcting things like the fact that Jimi did not claim to be homosexual to leave the army and what happened to the Hendrix/Zappa guitar.
As I've noted elsewhere, there are Entire Paragraphs unsourced, still in his article. Some of them, IMHO are not only complete speculation, they're actually unsourced malice (The people adding that stuff are lucky Jimi's dead.). Why is this material still up there? I checked the records and some of it's been up there for Three Years! Also fascinating to me how many judgments are being made about the material I'd like to include w/out editors knowing what the material is....
I had no plan to come here today - but there was something that did get changed in Jimi's article that I really had to at least try to correct. That Jimi! :D Maybe that will get deleted too. Oh well. Take care, Gabe. And once again, I appreciate your support for my ill-advised efforts. I am beginning to realize just how stupid I have been for sticking so many of my thoughts, mind and research, into an article where it really wasn't that welcome in the first place, was it? A price will be extracted for that, I sense. I won't be here much for the next little while, but again, I really appreciate what you said re newbies and rules. w/ wikilove, Charlie Inks (talk) 02:12, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hey sister! Saw this and wanted to weigh in, hope you find it helpful. I definitely think you can keep adding to Jimi's article, no worries there. But I do agree, readers would benefit even more if you split it off into articles, because then you have so much less to worry about with devices regards to space and the reader gets so much more detail. When I worked on history of timekeeping devices we had to split off history of timekeeping devices in Egypt so we could treat it in the detail it deserved. Plus we got a DYK for it! So yeah, when you have the time, consider splitting it so you can go into really extensive detail...and get your work on the main page! Thats pretty cool. :) Keilana|Parlez ici 00:46, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hey Keilana, thanks for this and your thoughts further down. I'm very tired right now - hadn't planned to be here today, but I appreciate the example you're giving me here. I'm taking a break from wikipedia, but whenever I'm back, I'll look into the articles you've suggested, yes? Cheers! Charlie Inks (talk) 02:47, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
GabeMc, if you have been following our help of Charlie in the past you know we've never asked her to do something when we did not explain how and why. I agree that it might have been interpreted the way you say, but if she had responded "okay, I'll try to do that", we would not have just let the subject go until later like that. But no, she said, "perhaps [I will] take this to the T-House". Charlie knows when to ask questions and get the help she needs. That and her motivation are what make her such an amazing Wikipedian.
Charlie, I hope you did not think we expected you to take this on by yourself. I told you I would read the article this weekend and give you some help. This is the end of the Summer semester for me so I do have final exams this week, but I will not forget you! hajatvrc @ 01:38, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry Hajatvrc, I won't be editing or adding anything to Jimi's article.
Good luck with your exams, and I won't forget you either! Take care, Charlie Inks (talk) 02:28, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay Hajatvrc, I am sure you are correct. Taken out of context it looked like perhaps advice to attempt tasks not yet learned, and without some guidance this can be discouraging, well it was in my personal experience anyway. I'm glad to know that you are not just giving advice without offering the needed practical help. I too see great potential in this editor so I was only trying to help "look out" for them during this crucial first year. It appears I have missed most of the important context that would have made my above suggestions redundant. Thanks for the clarification Hajatvrc! ~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 01:49, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi Gabe, I identify very much with your personal experience. Yes, I appreciate practical help. I don't know how long I'll be here, but you'r another person I will not forget. None of your thoughts here were redundant. Not to me. Thanks, Gabe. Charlie Inks (talk) 02:30, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

The Tea Leaf - Issue Five edit

Stop by for a tasty glass of wiki-iced tea at the Teahouse, today!

Hi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteer who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
  • More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all here.
  • Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in here.
  • New Teahouse guest barnstar is awarded to first recipient: Charlie Inks. Using the Teahouse barnstar designed by Heatherawalls, hosts hajatvrc and Ryan Vesey created the new Teahouse Guest Barnstar. The first recipient is Charlie Inks, for her boldness in asking questions at the Teahouse. Check out the award in action here.
  • Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania! The Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania this past month, where editor retention and interface design was heavily discussed. Sarah and Jonathan presented the Teahouse during the Wikimedia Fellowships panel. Slides can be viewed here. A lunch was also held at Wikimania for Teahouse hosts.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

In response to your feedback edit

Doubtful it's Wikipedia, as websites don't ping people. You might have picked up malware some place. Try using TCPView to check your incoming/outgoing connections (for Windows users): http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx

Hey MarcusBritish! Thanks very much for this! Funny how after you responded it stopped for a while, and not long after I logged on today, it's happening again. But as a complete alien in the world of geeks - yet another reason why I wonder WTH I'm doing here - I'm very thankful ppl like You Are Here! Cheers! Charlie Inks (talk) 02:33, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Again? Sounds like a HTTP persistent connection which shouldn't last more than a few minutes. Besides, if it's only pinging, I wouldn't worry too much... that's just computers/servers saying, "Are you there?" ... "Yes, I am" to each other, while determining the send/response time. If your computer starts to lag, or your browser crash frequently, or anything else strange then I would be concerned about malware, a trojan, etc. In which case, run a full virus scan and check you have a firewall on. If not, then not to worry. Gave to have helped, Ma®©usBritish{chat} 07:41, 18 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Jimi Hendrix—what I'm working on edit

Hey Charlie, I just wanted to give you a heads-up of what I'm doing in case you come back in the middle of it and are confused. The major thing I'm doing right now is reducing the clutter of the citations. Right now, about a third (or maybe more) of the citations appear more than once and are fully documented each time. There is actually a way to only document a citation once and have it appear multiple times as in-line citations in multiple places. Once I am finished this, the file size of the article will be a lot smaller, as a significant portion of it is just citations. This is pretty hard work so it may take me a few days, but our computers and the Wikipedia servers will be thankful for the reduced load.

Regarding splitting up the article, I do not think it is entirely necessary right now. I think if I can clean it up by reducing the redundancy of the citations, we will have more room to add information without the file size getting too big. As I work through the sections one-by-one, I am removing some irrelevant information, such as one of Jimi's family members having six fingers on one hand. It is a cool fact, but takes away from the information about Jimi himself.

One of the big things that has to be worked on is the order in which events are presented. There are many examples, such as at one point it talks about Jimi's brother dying and then continues to talk about things his brother did in the rest of the section. Information does not have to always be in chronological order between sections, but within a section that serves only to narrate a story, it should be as ordered as possible. All big articles have this problem when so much material has been added in such a short time, so it is not an immediate issue. Over time we can take it section-by-section. The information all belongs, we just need to create some consistency within sections.

This is going to be a Featured Article one day, I am sure of it. How could Jimi Hendrix not have an FA? :D hajatvrc @ 00:30, 6 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hey Hajatvrc, I was just taking a look at the article and was thinking the same thing. Charlie, if you want some help with the citations, I'd love to teach you how to do it for the future. And I agree, it'll definitely be an FA! Keilana|Parlez ici 02:23, 6 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hey Charlie, I saw your note. Did you read mine in this topic?hajatvrc @ 01:22, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
I want you to know that I plan to work on this article with you, as I know it is important to you. Don't worry, you won't be hazed. The only people I know of who are active on Jimi's page already adore the work you are doing. hajatvrc @ 01:25, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and about TJHE stuff, I do think a lot of it can be moved to the other article, but again, don't try to do it all by yourself. No one would want to do that all that by themself as it is a heck of a lot of work. Also, I see that you are concerned about taking out things that other people have written. Wikipedia is a wiki meaning anyone can and should edit other people's work. If those people added the information to get "the credit", then they do not have Wikipedia's or Jimi Hendrix's interest at heart. You can BE BOLD and do whatever you think will improve the article, and if someone has a problem with it, then they can engage in conversation with all of us. Content can always be added back or reverted after it is taken out or edited. My advice is to keep your own goals and not let other people scare you out of them. Last time you did not have a good experience, but this time you have many other editors who are on your side. All of the hosts love you, and if you had a problem I could solicit all of their help in one afternoon. hajatvrc @ 01:51, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you to anyone I forgot to thank - see you when I see you edit

I hope I responded to all talk here - but I'm now exhausted. I had no intention to be here today, but that darned Jimi - I saw something that had to be changed that I had to at least try to correct.... Anyways, if there's talk on this page I forgot to respond to, I'm sorry.

Have a nice break Charlie, its good to step away sometimes, just don't forget about us. When you come back try to step away before it gets overwhelming/exhausting, as this place can often be. There is no need to attempt to absorb everything so quickly, becoming a good wikipedian takes time, years even, Rome and all that you know. Cheers! ~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 03:03, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Before wrecking the Hendrix page you might have tried reading some of the authorative works written and the major Hendrix authority on him, Glebeek. Much of what you have added is innacuracy and POV from publications not dedicated to the study of Hendrix, that are clearly only using his story to fit in with their chosen theme, without much attention to the source. We can all flood the Hendrix page with cited rubbish revision from dodgy publications if you want. I suggest reverting back to where you started.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Jameselmo (talkcontribs)

Replied there, I suggest you discontinue making baseless accusations. Ryan Vesey 04:05, 4 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Charlie, I hope you'll ignore this man's message. If you look at his talk page, he has repeatedly been warned for his disruption on Jimi's page. Ryan Vesey 04:12, 4 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Agreed with Ryan, replied there as well. hajatvrc @ 06:40, 4 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

The Tea Leaf - Issue Six edit

Hi! Welcome to the sixth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.

  • Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
  • Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
  • New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the hosts page and become a Teahouse host today!
  • Host lounge renovations nearing completion. Working closely with Teahouse hosts, we've made some major renovations to the Teahouse Host Lounge - the main hangout and resource space for hosts. Learn more about the improvements here.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

Main Page appearance: Jimi Hendrix edit

This is a note to let the main editors of Jimi Hendrix know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on March 4, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/March 4, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Jimi Hendrix (1942–1970) was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. Despite a relatively brief mainstream career spanning four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. Born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1963, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee, and began playing gigs on the chitlin' circuit, eventually moving to England in late 1966 after being discovered by bassist Chas Chandler of the Animals. Within months, Hendrix had earned three UK top ten hits with the Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", and "The Wind Cries Mary". He achieved fame in the US after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and in 1968 his third and final studio album, Electric Ladyland, reached number one in the US. The world's highest-paid performer, he headlined the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 before dying from barbiturate-related asphyxia on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27. ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
