Image rationale

Thanks for your efforts on adding the templates to all those images the spamming Betacommandbot has flagged. I no longer support images on Wikipedia and one of the reasons for this is the rationale information that I gave for the many book images I've uploaded over the years was perfectly acceptable 6 months ago but because it no longer looks "pretty" images are being flagged for deletion. Unless I am paid I'm not wasting my time reinventing the wheel. The reason I'm dropping you a line is you've intercepted a few delete templates relating to images from the "Saint" book series (Simon Templar). I, along with a member who quit the project a year ago because of the image policy, among other reasons, uploaded book images for all 50 of the Saint books. I've only received Beta's spam for about a half dozen of these so presumably the rest will follow. If you have the time to kill, please feel free to jump ahead and "fix" the image pages for the rest of the series. The list (with links) can be found either on the main Simon Templar page linked above, or on the template included with the various book articles, such as Enter the Saint. Can I second the thanks from 23skidoo, you have done sterling work on these and many other Fair Use Rationale issues. I have loads of sympathy with 23skidoo about the "spam" messages although I can see the ultimate value of the template, i.e. making monitoring and automatic management of the FURs easier. However this messaging of editors in volume just puts people off, our Saint and Matt Helm editor a case in point. Thanks for the reply. I guess what annoys me is with the exception of a few images I uploaded back in the early days, all my rationales already have the information that the bot is demanding. It's trying to create a policy where none exists -- there is nothing saying that template must be used, only that the information be included and I have done so. I will never upload any further images because as far as I'm concerned, in 6 months some tin god will decide what we have now isn't good enough, change the rules (unilaterally, probably) and we'll have to do this song and dance again. My viewpoint has now become if Wikipedia is so paranoid about image use (and no one has ever indicated one single bit of evidence to suggest anyone outside WP even cares, yet alone has made any sort of legal challenge over the use of an image), then it should become all-text. It would make WP look amateurish and stupid, but at least it would remove what I consider to be the No. 2 source of bad blood between WP editors, surpassed only by the "deletionists vs inclusionists" conflict that was recently profiled by the Associated Press.

Re: List of disputed non-free album covers

Not at all, you can put links to any maintenance lists in my userspace wherever you want. I also maintain similar lists for other image types (see list of film posters with disputed fair use claim or without fair use rationale, list of DVD covers with disputed fair use claim or without fair use rationale and list of book covers with disputed fair use claim or without fair use rationale). I'm glad if they will be useful to somebody. I can create other lists on request and modify the way they are updated so let me know if you have any suggestions. I was a bit annoyed by the bot's threat to delete it since I figured it was so obvious that fair use would apply here and I didn't feel I had the zest to do this myself. One for you

Another user has added a more detailed image rationale for the lead image at The Illuminatus Trilogy which I uploaded more than a year ago but I fear it won't be good enough should the bots find it. When you have a moment, although to my knowledge it hasn't yet been tagged, could you add the full template? It'll probably save me (and you) from getting the bot message later. It might not hurt to contact the editor who made the change, too -- if this person is adding these partial rationales to image pages, and they're not good enough for the bots, it's probably a waste of the person's time unless he/she starts using that template. • My understanding is that, while the rationale template is not mandatory, the lack of said template is what's triggering the bots. That's one reason, so I understand, why people are so annoyed at Betacommandbot and a root cause of my own frustration. I've heard your good at writing large numbers of FURs for images. User:East718/DFUI/Logos has been pretty much my one-man operation for the last month. I'm starting to get burned out and a good 50% of the images are sourced and just need a backlink/generic rationale. Partially as a result of your vote to keep the article, the AfD resulted in "no consensus". Since you are convinced that Wikipedia should have an article on Jacen Solo, please stand by that and help get this article to the bare minimum encyclopedic standards. This includes a complete rewrite from a non-in-universe perspective, accompanied by reliable, third-party secondary sources.

If however the article has not been brought up to this bare minimum within the next 4 weeks, I will consider resubmitting it for deletion.

Book image

The book image for The Castle (novel) just got deleted. It was not one I had uploaded so I never got the notification for it. My concern is I think the image was of a pre-1923 edition so it shouldn't have been deleted in any event. Maybe you can put this on your to-do list to check out when you have a chance. It's already had the effect that I no longer upload images to Wikipedia, though and I am not alone in that. No, I didn't scan that one (wish I did - that book is worth about $500). It was one of the first images I ever uploaded, I believe, and I think it was provided to me by the webmaster of a site that included pics of the various editions of Burroughs' books. Could you please check this image page?

Things seem to have quieted down on the BC bot side. I got a minor flood from another bot a few days back regarding some orphaned images, but in those cases it was because the pics wre replaced by images of first edition books, which was OK by me. I can only hope that now that the deadline has passed we've seen the end of this unpleasantness. That said, I do have one image page that I was wondering if you could take a look at here. It has no "rationale template" but it's unusual as in that case I actually was able to get direct permission from the copyright holder of the image to use it. Maybe there was something there that let the bot skip over it, but now that we're in the era of "speedy delete" I'd hate for some bot or enthusiastic editor to come along and deep-six it. Do you think the template is needed there? (PS. Question from Horsebird

Hello Blathnaid - Thank you for your welcome note. I am a bit confused about the first article I contributed - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Miller

The note you left on the top of the article says, "This article or section includes a list of references or external links, but its sources remain unclear because it lacks in-text citations. You can improve this article by introducing more precise citations."

I have listed active web links as well as feature articles about Steven Miller from well established magazines. The reference materials and links provide support for the content in the article as a whole. Placing in-text citations would be quite random.

It is especially confusing since many articles in the general category "American record producers" have even more detailed information included in the articles but in fact have no references at all. For many record producers and audio engineers who are notable enough to be included in Wikipedia, links for their credits (which are included in the Steven Miller article) are the prime documentation. It has been my understanding that frudulent information gets sniffed out quickly by those in the know. For instance, these articles have no references but if there was bogus info, people within that business would take note and suggest changes to content.

Tagging conflict

So, the great cross-tabbing is done and there is a list of 700 images at User:Betacommand/Sandbox 3 that show images classed as both free AND non-free. Obviously, an image can only be one of the two, so if editors could go through and correct the images, striking them out on the master list it would be great. Thanks. Thanks for the nice message. When writing the article, I generally reasearch as I go, so no, nothing really in particular. I'm actually quite busy recently, trying to tackle the 10,000+ missing Burkina Faso stubs and the 4,000+ French cantons, making the List of earthquakes not look so crap and writing and expanding the earthquake articles so that earthquakes are just as well covered as tropical storms, putting Leon M'ba, Felix Houphouet Boigny, and Hells Canyon National Park to at least GA, and of course the Tourism and Crime series in Africa. The short answer: When wondering what to skip, just try the bluelinks. (: I'm an Editorofthewiki^{[citation needed]} 19:04, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

If you think my effort countering systemic bias is large, talk to User:Blofeld of SPECTRE. Before I (and later User:EJF) came along, he basically single-handedly had to craft millions of stubs on towns around the world that Wikipedia was missing. Question

Hello. I've seen you also started articles from the Tourism in ... series. I recently blocked a disruptive editor who've been deliberately avoiding discussion and warred here. Continent specific templates are created, like {{Tourism in Africa}}, similar to other ones as {{Politics of Africa}} or {{Geography of Europe}}. I see no point in having a huge Tourism template, including links to tourism articles of all countries plus other tourism topics articles. I think we should use only "Tourism in ..." specific templates. What do you think about it? Thanks. I added the link to the template. Basically there is no conflict here, only one certain user are adding that main template to country-specific articles and country-links to it. He's the only one who does so, all other users share your view on this issue. I suggest adding {{Tourism}} to your watchlist to prevent repetitive addition of these links. National Parks

Hi great work on Sapo National Park. I don't know if you;ve noticed but I've been creating a national park series of templates by country. I started or expanded a few articles too such as Minkébé National Park andNechisar National Park. What my aim is, is the get all of them up and running and connected and try writing each of them to B class. It also ties in with my work on Wildlife of Africa which I will get around to. Andrew Cuomo

On his page there is a looooonnng paragraph in the controversies section about his going after Usenet groups due to child pornography. It seems extremely biased and seems to give way to much undue weight to the subject given that Cuomo has done many other things in his career. I did work editing it and shortening it but it seems that their are many editors with an agenda watching that page and adding MORE bias statements to it. Sapo National Park

Thank you for editing the article to address the GA reviewer's concerns. Personal circumstances forced me to abruptly stop editing Wikipedia for about two months, and I'm thrilled to see that the article passed GA review with your improvements. I think your changes have really improved the article's flow and comprehensiveness (e.g. moving geographical data out of the "History" section, the entire "Flora" section), and I want to thank you again for your great work. Thanks I've used it to create Template:National Parks of The Gambia. Now look what I found here. German wikipedia has all 66 forest parks and we didn't even have one national park. English wikipedia in many of the most important areas is quite an embarrassment. I've lost count how many times I've used other wikipedias to get articles on real world content on here which the germans and the dutch seem to regard as rightly more important. Yes I;ve noticed other areas of The Gambia are much more developed than us too, must be a specialist who works on that country. It is not good to see the small wikipedias with full content and us lagging behind in area that really count!! Yes it is a good un. I woudl also require journals and books to write an FA on them. There is enough info ionline to get us some GAs but if we want the best articles possible we need to conduct research properly. Just added some images to the ones I created earlier. COmmons has over 30 images for some of them. I know, many people assume 2.5 million is "nearly complete". In fact this project is only really in its infancy. Afraid I don't speak German but I do understand SPanish and have been working on El Salvador of late. Have a look at La Palma, Chalatenango, Apastepeque and Culture of El Salvador which were missing in content. Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008

Hey, thanks for the thorough review. I have some questions though. A lot of your suggestions want me to add more information, but I don't know if I should. The chart positions of the song are on the song's page which is adequately wikilinked. I don't want to add every aspect of the contest because then there will be overlap with other related pages (Secret Combination (song), Kalomoira, Eurovision Song Contest 2008). African economy

Hi. I've started a full set of templates for each of the African economies at Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Economy templates. Basically I see them as a good instrastructure to develop each of the economies on wikipedia. It gives us the chance to link case studies on many of the main exports/industries in the country was is very important as a vast proportion of the population is often involved in such industries. See for example Pineapple production in Côte d'Ivoire and how the template is used. Any help you can give on building up the templates with potential articles related to the economy, distributing the templates in the articles linked or filling in the red links for be much appreciated! For instance Template:Economy of Ghana has some notable content already but potentially these templates can be crammed full with articles related to the economy by African country. Are you looking for a project you can really sink your teeth into?

I noticed you are a member of the Geography WikiProject. I thought you might be interested in this...

A huge collaboration is underway, in which participants all work on 247 pages at a time. That's right, there are 247 pages in the set, and we're all working on all of them! We kind of cheat, by using advanced wikitools like AWB and Linky that let you load or switch between pages quickly (and other tricks).

We're building a geography reference aid for Wikipedia covering every country of the world. Organized as topic outlines (a type of structured list), these pages present maps, pictures, basic information on each country, and links to essential articles about each country on Wikipedia. We have created 247 drafts (one for every country of the world), 28 of which have been completed enough that they've been moved to article space already (so people can make use of them, even though they're still under construction). The rest are getting pretty close.

Each of these pages in turn form part of Wikipedia's outline of knowledge, and when completed, this branch of the outline will be the best general navigation aid for browsing country-related information on Wikipedia.

We're looking for users who love geography, and who use or would like to start using:

• WP:AWB, or
• Firefox, with the Linky add-on, or
• similar tools and/or other tricks

...to edit many pages fast.

While some of us work on completing one country page at a time, most of the work we do entails completing a particular knowledge item on all of the pages. For example, filling in the population figures for each country, or creating redirects to "bluelink" standard link names used throughout the set, or placing a specific type of map on each page, etc. etc.

Working in this way is kind of like traveling around the world, since you get to visit the page of each country of the world to work on it.

Tasks range from the simple (filling in blanks, search/replace, copy/paste) to the more complex (Customizing sections to each country, Google searches of Wikipedia to find relevant articles, etc.).

This project is very important, because information is only useful if you can find it, and these pages show you what's here on Wikipedia without you having to guess at what to type in a search box.

To give you an idea of what these pages will look like when complete, here are the most complete ones so far:

• Topic outline of Japan
• Topic outline of Thailand
• Topic outline of Taiwan

Hi Blathnaid , I've opened a reassessment on Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 as I feel there should be greater encyclopedic information (broad coverage) within the article. I don't think it would take much work to bring it up to scratch as all the information is already out there, some of it in place on Wikipedia. But it would be worth people doing the work as the article is used as an example of a "FOO in the Eurovision Song Contest YEAR" Good Article, and it would be worth giving people something reasonably comprehensive and worthwhile to work toward.
