Ireland cricket team flagicon

Hi Andrwsc, When looking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Team templates, I notice that Ireland is missing a flagicon. This is presumably because the Irish cricket team represents the whole island, rather than just the Republic of Ireland. Could you please alter Template:Country data Ireland so that the flag used for the variant "cricket" is this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_Irish_cricket_team.svg

Is it possible for you to then alter Template:Cr and Template:Cr-rt such that Ireland and Ireland show up with the flag?

Per the discussion at WT:WikiProject Cricket and Template talk:Country data Ireland, that is a derivative of a copyrighted image, and therefore can't be transcluded by a flag template per WP:Non-free content criteria. Sorry — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 15:54, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

 Fixed Last night I made those initial edits while waiting to board a flight, so I couldn't finish the job before getting on the plane. I started to edit some of the country data templates today, but changed my mind and changed Template:ih et. al. instead. The issue is that about half of the articles in Category:National ice hockey teams are of the form "...men's national ice hockey team" and the other half are just "...national ice hockey team". Flag templates such as {{ih}} are used to create a standardized naming convention, but those names can be over-ridden by extra code in specific country data templates. In the end, I thought it would be better to make "...men's national ice hockey team" the standard form, and create a bunch of redirects for the lesser-known hockey teams that do not have "men's" in the name. That way, none of the country data templates need override code (and the "weight" and complexity that comes with it). Hope this helps — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 22:14, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Ok. Thanks for your effort. Yesterday I had another idea, see what you think of this one: We've got the Ih template, which defaults/redirects to the men's teams (whether in the article name or not). Then we have the Ihw template that explicitly links to the women's teams. How about if we created an Ihm template, that (obviously) would link explicitly to the men's teams? Those who wanted, could then, where appropriate, replace the Ih template with the Ihm template. The Ihm template would have "mw = men's", the Ihw template would have "mw = women's", and the Ih template would have the mw parameter empty (it would then have lose any default value that's present now). The empty mw parameter would then link to the "genderless" version (Xxxxx national ice hockey team), which could be either a redirect to the men's team, or a dab page presenting the men's and women's (and junior variants) teams. This has a logical appeal to me. What do you think? Sorry if it means more work for you...

Well, I can't think of any situation where an editor would intentionally want a flagged link to a disambiguation page. These templates are almost always used for results formatting, and therefore you'd always want to link to the appropriate team (men's or women's). WP:olympics award proposal

I'd like to run something by you. I've been thinking of ways to encourage editors to work on copy editing articles to bring them to GA and FA standards. Many other projects use awards as a "carrot" so to speak. I was thinking it might be a good idea to do the same for the Olympics project. In taking a page from the MilHist awards page they have an A-Class medal with four different grades. I was thinking of something similar, perhaps named "Olympic Order" with bronze, silver, gold and gold with olive wreath grades. We would put it to the community for final approval and then list various accomplishments that would have to be met in order to receive the various grades. I have no abilities with graphic design and would probably seek help from the Reward Board. But first do you think this is a good idea? Is it even worth the effort? I've been lamenting the fact that we basically have one award, The Olympics Barnstar, that is exclusive to the Olympics page, while this Olympic Order would be awarded only for meeting certain criteria rather than for undefined "contributions", having more than the one award would be a nice upgrade for this project. US Olympic Flags

Heyo

It's a bit of a sensitive topic but I figured I'll raise it non-the-less. Currently, there seems to be a flag template that transfers {{flag|Palestine}} to a Palestinian flag and the word Palestine which links to Palestinian territories. Currently, Palestinian territories are split between Hamas and Fatah and they are not considered as a "state". As such, I believe it would be preferred to either link the template to "Palestinian territories" or to the "Palestinian National Authority". This caught my attention while rummaging through the country by population page and checking the template, I think the edit which may have caused this issue is this one. You can reply here if you wish... I'll be watching the page.

There are several different templates that render the Palestinian flag (with various wikilinks), and it sounds like {{flag|Palestinian Authority}} is the one you are looking for. Hope this helps — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:01, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

The other templates are OK, best I'm aware, but the {{flag|Palestine}} one currently refers to an historical region rather than a country\territory and it needs to refer to either Palestinian Territories or Palestinian National Authority. Current situation, where the text says "Palestine" but the link is to the Palestinian Territories article is a bit strange and should be, IMHO, fixed.

Well, since the wikilink that {{flag|Palestine}} renders is effectively the same as [[Palestinian territories|Palestine]], there is no linked reference to the historical region. The display name may be confusing for some instances in which that flag template is used, but it is also necessary for other instances (such as links to the Palestine national football team. Again, you can always change {{flag|Palestine}} to {{flag|Palestinian territories}} anywhere you think that is necessary, but {{flag}} is not able to change the wikilink display name to something different than what is passed to it. Template:Football in Northern Ireland‎;

That navbox has had that flag for 2½ years, similar to the style of the other ~100 "Football in ..." navboxes. Since all Northern Ireland international teams are linked from that box, there is no reason to exclude the flag that is universally acknowledged to represent those teams. You will need consensus (from WP:FOOTY, I presume) to change the style of this, or any other template in that series. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:55, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

If it was a nav box for only NI international teams then the flag would be appropriate - but it also includes local level football where the Ulster Banner is not used. My opinion from before is that icon-sized images are essentially useless on pages like this. Icons are useful navigational aids in certain instances, but I think your intent on this page is to add useful encyclopedia content. Therefore, I would suggest putting the flag images in a separate table column and render them at a decent size (like 45px) (using normal wiki image syntax instead of using a template) so that some detail is visible. This approach works well on pages such as States of Brazil, U.S. state, and perhaps Cantons of Switzerland and States of Germany (for the table with coats of arms). I see icon-sized images on some of the articles in Category:First-level administrative country subdivisions, such as States and territories of Australia, but to be honest, I feel those pages are less effective than the pages where larger flag or CoA images are displayed. No, that's also a non-free image, and so cannot be rendered by template under any circumstances, and should only appear on a minimal number of articles (and not on any user page). This is Wikipedia policy, not just a guideline. Ah, ok, I have read your talk page, so I think I understand your hesitation to nominate that article yourself. But I should not be your "proxy" for any deletion nomination; it would be disingenuous to use my admin status to confer any kind of authority. Also, I have no expert knowledge on this subject, or what constitutes notability for software, so I suggest asking other editors who work in that topic area for their opinions—WP:WikiProject IRC perhaps? Just a question, because you specially mentioned the Olympic Committee of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia case: are you certain about that official-name status? Because apparently the committee itself officially refers to itself as the "Macedonian Olympic Committee" too [1], though it is of course called by the longer name by its international parent organisation [2]. It may be an interesting special case. Don't know if you saw it, but there has actually been a move request open at the article talk page, but it's been held open until the central discussion finishes. Ah, excellent point, and I had not seen that. I was looking at the European Olympic Committees page, where our convention is to use the full name as specified by the IOC. The inappropriate links seem to be a mixture of: malformed dates, linking ordinal numbers for no good reason, using link syntax instead of <ref>, and links that should be disambiguated. Macedonia / Olympics follow-up

Hi Andrwsc, here's a follow-up about the Macedonia/Olympics discussion we had the other day. The Centralized Discussion has now concluded with a consensus for the position we both supported (see WP:MOSMAC2), i.e. using plain "Macedonia" in most Olympics-related contexts. I've begun to implement this in a couple of places, and I now notice that most of the "FYR"s are pulled in through a single template, {{Country IOC alias MKD}}, which currently says "FYR Macedonia". Apparently it gets transcluded through {{flagIOC}} on multiple pages, and through {{Infobox Country Olympics}} on the Macedonia-focused articles. On a quick scan through the "whatlinkshere" list I couldn't find an occasion where the result could not validly be replaced with plain "Macedonia". Do you think it would be okay to edit this template? Fut.Perf. ☼ 07:48, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Before we get too deeply into this I should say (1) I'm not visually impaired, and my opinion counts less than readers who are impaired, and (2) screen readers can be configured in many different ways, so whatever advice I can give you is somewhat generic and will be contradicted in some cases in practice. So, for example, for {{fb|Brazil}} → Brazil one screen reader might say "Brazil link Brazil national football team link", while another might just say "Brazil Brazil" in a high-pitched voice. Although I don't have a strong feeling about this particular example, it might be better in this case to have the flag icon not have a link or alt text, so that a screen reader says just "Brazil national football team link", or just "Brazil". After all, I expect that the benefit to the sighted reader of being able to go directly to the Brazil article is fairly small in these cases; it might even be negative. Ok. I pride myself on being neutral—especially in the face of nationalism, which I see a lot in my Wiki editing. I have had to deal with Serbian-Croatian conflict, German nationalism, Russian nationalism, etc. even on sports-related edits, which are my main area of interest. I have linked User:Moreschi/The Plague from my user page, as I agree strongly with that essay. I view myself as a "citizen of the world", having lived and worked in multiple countries on multiple continents. (In fact, I'm currently resident in a country of which I am not a citizen.) I do not advertise my passport nationality. I object to be grouped into a particular nationality grouping (even "unknown/other"), especially if that may be thrown back at me someday as an accusation of a particular nationalist bias or POV. This template needs to be edited or deleted. It is producing an error message on the pages it has been placed. It links to a file image that was deleted because it violated a non-free media agreement. Could you please delete this template, or edit it so that it remains invisible on the pages using it, until a free image can be used on any article. This is a highly-visible template, so put a {{editprotected}} request on the talk page and an admin will look at that request. The flag image you had added was not used anywhere on en.wiki as a flag icon, so does not need to be in that template per WP:WikiProject Flag Template conventions. Per Wikipedia:High-risk templates, this template is protected because it is transcluded on about 15,000 pages. Your addition of the "Guarantees" variant was not documented within the template per WP:WikiProject Flag Template instructions. I suggest you read them before attempting to make changes to any of the flag templates. And the image itself (File:Flag of the Three Guarantees.svg) is not used in icon form anywhere on this Wikipedia, so there is absolutely no point in making this high-use template larger for no reason whatsoever. Of course the "Guarantees" variant was not documented within the template, because you blocked it exactly when I'm writing!.
