Trying to use visual editing edit

I worked several hours editing my new submission, David Adams (Peace Activist) in visual editing, but could not return to source editing so I lost all the corrections.

since then, I publish the submission each time I do some visual editing. In that way I don't lost the corrections and I can return to source editing.

However, I continue to work on the submission . . .

I'm sure there's a better way, but I couldn't find it and it's frustrating to lose lots of work!  :-(((

Guidelines when you are the subject of coverage in Wikipedia edit

Hello Adams1peace.

I am note sure if anyone has pointed you to the guideline Wikipedia:Autobiography. You should read it. I have agreed that David Adams (peace activist) is a notable subject worthy for inclusion on Wikipedia, but the original version has many failings warned of by Wikipedia:Autobiography, and significant problems remain. The solution is to revamp the article based on third party sources. I have found some, but could use help.

It is important that you do not edit articles intimately connected to yourself. Instead, you should make suggestions on their talk pages, and hope that someone notices. If there is a problem of importance, try the {{help me}} tag. Or write on the talk page of editors who in the past have edited the article, such as myself.

I wish to encourage you to edit some articles on topics that you are interested in, but not personally connected to. This may include articles that could be improved by mention of yourself or your past organisations, or events that involved you. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 01:35, 18 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Question: There are a number of topics that I am interested in, and that could be improved by mention of organizations and events that have involved me. But how can I do this if you say I must not be personally connected to the topic? Adams1peace (talk) 18:00, 26 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Smokey Joe,

I appreciate the time and effort you have put into editing David Adams (peace activist).

I’ve read through the wikipage you suggested which strongly discourages autobiography, and I see the point which is well-taken as a matter of general policy. As far as I know, when I was born there were no earthquakes, tidal waves, tornadoes, firestorms, or explosions of neighbouring stars

Here are the results of my search for third-party sources ... copied to Talk:David_Adams_(peace_activist)#Suggested_sources

Here are the results of my search for third-party sources, i.e. independent external references, corresponding to 10 of the 36 footnotes in David Adams (peace activist). [16 footnotes are already external, and the other 10 are books.] When you have the time, could you look at these 10 to see if the new references are appropriate? And if so, can we retain at the same time some of the links to the actual studies which are not independent in addition to those that are independent?

34-36 - external references

That leaves the following which are books.

Is it necessary or useful to search for external references to the books?

Also, is it possible to link not only to the Amazon page but in addition to the full copy of the book which is freely available on my website?

Hi. I think you had not grasped the meaning of WP:Third party sources. It is not a big deal, we have some, and it is not shame on a person for not being a publicity tart. With a view to improving the article David Adams (peace activist), can I ask: Have any of David Adams' efforts at UNESCO or Culture of Peace been any good? Any postive outcomes? Any negative outcomes or lessons learned? As published, assessed by independent outsides? Independent journalists or scholars.
The Culture of Peace News Network is not an independent source since I coordinate it, but over the years it contains thousands of articles about the culture of peace. No doubt they are outcomes of the work at UNESCO and the United Nations. CPNN does not talk much about me - just a brief mention on the page "about" - since, as you put it, I am not a publicity tart. Funny thing, when I was a laboratory scientist and publishing scientific articles, it was the rule that one should mention the names of all others working in the field and should evaluate, at least indirectly, the importance of their work. But when I went to the UN, all that changed. Names are not mentioned. At the UN you don't have the right to publish under your name without the express consent of the Secretary-General or Director-General. And the hundreds of UNESCO memos about the culture of peace in which my role is mentioned are considered as internal documents that cannot be put into the public domain. Only the Director-General's remarks (usually written by one of us in the organization) and the official decisions of the Executive Board and General Conference (again written by one of us and I wrote many) can be published, and they would never cite the name of someone working in the organization.Adams1peace (talk) 15:39, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Apart from offering any published third party commentary, the best thing you could do is to edit other articles. Learning to write about other topics is very important to understanding that everything about a Wikipedia biography is from a distant perspective. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 08:12, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I've started working on a Wikepedia page for Culture of Peace, beginning like the page in Spanish Wikipedia for Cultura de la paz. By the way I can't find how to indent a paragraph when editing - hence I've used →→→ Adams1peace (talk) 15:39, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Look at the code, to indent paragraphs and replies use ::: colons of varying lengths. As for not having your name on the U.N. reports and memos, you'll feel right at home on Wikipedia! Randy Kryn (talk) 16:13, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Testing to see if this indents. Adams1peace (talk) 16:29, 20 January 2018 (UTC) OK, I see it works.Adams1peace (talk) 16:30, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I've created a test page for culture of peace at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Adams1peace/Culture_of_peace
Maybe one of you guys could evaluate it? Adams1peace (talk) 16:37, 22 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Will take a good look at it in the next couple of days, and if I do any edits on it I'll quickly revert them so you can have a look at the two versions in the edit history. Upon a quick look it seems interesting yet has to be written in an encyclopedic style, like a robot, without opinions or editorializing unless referenced. A valuable topic, thanks for bringing it to Wikipedia. Randy Kryn (talk) 00:46, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! I appreciate the work you are doing. In the meantime I'll try to improve it. Adams1peace (talk) 10:50, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I've managed to find many official UN sources and other sources independent of me. Hopefully, you will now find it to be more in an encyclopedic style without my own opinions. Adams1peace (talk) 12:33, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
The exception concerns the fate of UNESCO's national culture of peace programmes. The UN does not talk about its failures. And as far as I can find in my searches, I am the only person who talks about the fact that they failed. Adams1peace (talk) 12:52, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Apologies, I haven't gotten around to editing the page. On Wikipedian time "a couple days" could stretch out a bit. Over the weekend (on Wikipedian time "over the weekend" means give it a month or two) hopefully. Will have to make a mental map of the subject when I dive in. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 18:54, 26 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the update. No rush. I hope you will enjoy the task! :-) Adams1peace (talk) 20:58, 26 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
And still haven't gotten to it, my apology. I get caught up in various things here and go on edit runs, and every couple days realize there are a few things I want to get to and your draft page is one of them. I'll try to put my attention on it soon. Congrats on getting the photo approved. Randy Kryn (talk) 03:30, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Have done some formatting and wording edits, and then reverted back to your draft (the edits are accessible in the history of the page). An interesting subject. Randy Kryn (talk) 11:30, 3 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Glad you find it interesting. Thank you for your editing. I like it, although the opening line is a bit awkward. Perhaps it needs to add the word "that": "The Culture of Peace is a United Nations consideration of the culture of peace that began in 1992 . . . " When you finish editing, will you click the button "Submit your draft for review"? Or will you tell me when it is time for me to do that?

Hello. Regarding the discussion of this file, I’ll be happy to help you through the murky waters of copyright on Wikipedia. Basically, you will need to answer some 5W's and H-type questions:
  • Who took the photo?
  • Will they license the photo for reuse by anyone for any purpose?
  • When and where was the photo taken?
  • If you are indeed David Adams, do you agree to it being published? (already answered by uploading it here). Please note I’m not suggesting you are not David Adams but Wikimedia usernames are not proof of identity (would you believe me if I said I am The Green Giant of frozen food fame?)
  • Do you or the photographer have a larger copy that could be uploaded here?
If you can persuade the photographer to license the photo, please ask them to thoroughly read the OTRS page (clicking on and reading the links included there), and send a license statement directly to the address given there, from their official email address if possible. Please note that forwarded emails will not be accepted. They should then get an automated reply with a ticket number in the subject line. Let me know the number and I will try to handle the OTRS process for you. Please feel free to ask me for help if you didn’t understand any of this. Green Giant (talk) 13:00, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I am trying to contact the person who took the photo back in 2010.Adams1peace (talk) 16:19, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
The photo was taken at a meeting called “The Power of Youth to Promote the Culture of Peace”, that was held at the International Social Justice Commission — Salvation Army, 221 East 52nd St. NYC. on Friday 29 October 2010. I've written to a number of people who were there to try to learn who took the photo, and to ask that person if he/she will license the photo for reuse by anyone for any purpose. Adams1peace (talk) 21:20, 26 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I have learned that the photo was taken by Adriana Parmegiani, whose email address is adrianap lgw.org . I have not contacted her directly, but our mutual friend says "she is very happy to allow any reproduction of this voluntary work." I appreciate your offer to handle the OTRS process. Does that mean that you could write to her to ask for permission? Adams1peace (talk) 20:14, 28 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
That’s great that you’ve found the photographer. Unfortunately I can’t contact her through OTRS because the purpose of OTRS is to verify the identity of the photographer. I will however contact her from my own email address. Green Giant (talk) 21:27, 28 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Done Ok, I’ve sent an email to that address. Green Giant (talk) 21:55, 28 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Moving conversation here edit

My apologies, I promised to help on the Culture of Peace page, and I'll try to focus on it from time to time in the next two weeks. The trick is to create a mental map of the subject, and I haven't been willing to take the time to create enough of one that the topic makes sense enough to me to work with and on a word flow describing it. The page does read like an essay, with too many quotes, so that will have to change somewhat (some quotes are fine, in context, and this page is creating quite a context). Please look at the "lead" I edited in and check it for accuracy, thanks. Much of the important information is in there, although a mention of a couple of the programs should be mentioned and briefly described. And I may ask a few questions along the way to understand the subject. Again, no promises, and if anyone else wants to edit the page as well that would be great. A few editors bettering the page should work it out well enough to add to Wikipedia's collection. Just have to make the lead and the rest of the page up-to-date and understandable to a general reading pubic. Randy Kryn (talk) 19:17, 14 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Randy. I am tied up today and tomorrow, but look forward to working on this on Monday, or if possible some tomorrow, with you (and anyone else who wants to help). I appreciate your involvement! Adams1peace (talk)
Now that I've had a chance to look carefully at your edit, I am very pleased with it. I have made only two minor changes. I clarify in the first line that the negotiations were in the context of preparations for the International Year for the Culture of Peace (negotiations in 1998/99 and the IYCP in 2000). And I have used a much more accurate and detailed footnote to explain the difficulties in the negotiations. I especially appreciate the additions you made, which show that you have done your own research on the topic: 1) the paragraph beginning "As explained by UNESCO" which comes from UN document A/55/377; 2) the UNESCO work for culture of peace at the present time in Africa, which you took from CPNN; and 3) the text about CPNN which refers to the web page of Dot Maver (Kosmos). I understand the cuts that you made, apparently to reduce reliance on my own published history of the culture of peace. But since that history is listed as an external link, the reader can find all of this information. And I agree with cutting out the points of the Declaration. In fact the points of the Programme of Action are much more clear and relevant. Thank you very much ! Adams1peace (talk)
Do you think I can now resubmit? Adams1peace (talk) 12:09, 16 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi, and thanks. No, lots of work to do before the page is ready for "the show", I'm traveling this week but will spend time with the page, and hopefully others will work on it. The points of the declaration are probably important to the page. Some questions, is the overall concept 'Culture of Peace' an ongoing type of civilizational change that the UN is recommending, and not just a one-or-two time event? If so then that should be clarified and accented up-front. Is the culture-shift still ongoing and will it be worked on in the future? Still have to create a fuller mental map of the concept and the intention of the initiators and authors, and describe it in a short but full description of the hopes that you and others put into it. Getting more interested the more attention I put on the article (which hasn't been very much so far). More soon. Randy Kryn (talk) 12:18, 16 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your continued attention. I'll await the next steps. As you have seen, the culture of peace is opposed by the USA and EU and their allies, so its future in the UN, as presently constituted, is not bright. On the other hand, the prestigious International Peace Bureau (this year joined by Mikhail Gorbachev) continues to nominate the culture of peace for a Nobel Peace Prize, which would make a big difference. Unfortunately, as far as I can see, their nomination letter has not been made public. By the way, it was the Nobel Peace Prize that put human rights "on the map". See the following: http://culture-of-peace.info/books/worldpeace/civil-society-3.html Adams1peace (talk) 12:51, 16 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks. I've been saying that Wikipedians are likely to get the Nobel Peace Prize around 2024, give or take a couple of years. Is the Culture of Peace (is it a proper name for upper-casing?) adopted by the General Assembly, did the US and EU oppose it there or veto it in the Security Council if it got that far (these questions may be answered on the page, but asking for my own clarity)? Are you also working on the related pages? Will keep plugging along on the page and concept in-between lots of other things this week and next. Maybe the IPB will release the letter if asked? Randy Kryn (talk) 13:17, 16 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
The culture of peace was adopted by the General Assembly as described in the reference I just added: http://culture-of-peace.info/history/Adoption.html Here is the quote relevant to your question about US and EU opposition: "In the end, despite the opposition of the Great Powers, resolution A/53/243 (available here) was adopted without a vote on September 13, 1999. As far as I know, Ambassador Chowdhury, in good diplomatic fashion, has never publicly stated how he managed to get it passed. One can only suppose that he told the Great Powers, "I have the votes, and if you insist on a vote, it will only show you as a minority against peace." With regard to the IPB, I'll follow your suggestion and ask them if their letter can be made public. With regard to work on other pages, I plan to work on the Seville Statement on Violence, but await the results of the Culture of Peace entry before undertaking it. And sometime down the road, perhaps a Wikipedia page on the Culture of War, but that will not be easy! Adams1peace (talk) 13:35, 16 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Randy, where are we on this?Adams1peace (talk) 16:18, 6 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi again, I'm getting no help on this. Should I try again to put it on line? Adams1peace (talk) 18:34, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Missed your May note, and have done some more editing just now (removed empty sections, edits for encyclopedic language and style). I think the page is understandable and encyclopedic enough now to be published, and you should either just put it up now or go through the approval process again. Maybe ask the same reviewer to look at it again? I've been lax in assisting on this, and one reason was I haven't really understood the concept (if the UN actually wants to implement this, to give it as a guideline or an instruction, or to issue it as a hoped-for result with little action being taken, etc.), and look forward to learning more about it. Please forgive me for my inaction, and I wish others had joined in as well. Randy Kryn (talk) 20:30, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Randy. I've sent it back to the reviewer that rejected it for his/her advice. Adams1peace (talk) 23:10, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Is it possible to reference both online and published versions of books? edit

The list of books on this site does not include references for the reader to go to the books.

All of the books exist in both online and published versions. Is it possible to provide references to both, or do I have to chose one or the other?

Thank you for your help.

Culture of Peace edit

I moved the Culture of peace page to upper-case 'Peace', per the text. Correct? Thanks. Happy International Day of Peace (I red-linked it as International Peace Day, so will create a redirect under that name). Randy Kryn (talk) 00:39, 21 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

...p.s. and have sent you an e-mail, today's digital equivalent of snail mail. Randy Kryn (talk) 11:24, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

....sent another after your message. check your spam folder, sometimes the first name 'Randy' reads out as obscene to email filters. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 18:27, 8 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
