The Premier League is an association football competition founded in 1992 which forms the top level of the English football league system.[1] As of 8 April 2022, a total of 30,745 Premier League goals have been scored,[2] of which only six were scored by goalkeepers.[3][4] Three came when the goalkeeper went forward for a corner kick to seek a late equalising or winning goal. The other three were flukes where a long ball forward eluded all other players; these usually involve a mistake by the defending goalkeeper which the scoring goalkeeper will, from solidarity, decline to celebrate.[5][6]

Bill Edgar of The Times analysed the 77[n 1] goals scored by goalkeepers in the Premier League and English Football League between 1888 and January 2021: 46 were penalty kicks, 19 were from the keeper's own half,[n 2] and the remaining 12 followed corner kicks.[n 3][7] Whereas the world's highest-scoring goalkeepers score mostly from penalties, none has done so in the Premier League. Supporters of Manchester City shouted for Ederson to take a penalty at Swansea City in April 2018, when their team had already secured the league title and were 4–0 ahead in the match, but manager Pep Guardiola said it would have been disrespectful to the opposition for the goalkeeper to do so.[9]
