Notice regarding "open_month_day" and "open_year" edit

The two date parameters open_month_day and open_year have been deprecated by the open_date parameter. open_date provides much more flexibility and is not substantially more difficult to use and understand than the two previous parameters. The infobox has been coded so that infoboxes still using the deprecated parameters will not be broken; however, in the future please use open_date rather than open_month_day and open_year. Keep in mind that open_date requires that links be inserted manually using double brackets; it will not automatically link the month/day and year as the deprecated parameters did.

Adding NYCSUBWAY to infobox edit

I was thinking about adding a link to the station's page on [nycsubway.org], since every station on the subway has a station there. I'm bad with template syntax so I wondered if anyone could help me with it. Thanks! Geoking66 01:37, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nearly every station article already links to the station's nycsubway.org page in "External links." Your proposal, therefore, would involve updating several hundred station articles, merely to shift that information from "External links" up to the Infobox.
I think a better priority is to focus on creating better articles, rather than making structural changes that would involve no net improvement. Marc Shepherd 12:26, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Accessibility edit

I propose moving the accessibility icon to the "Other" section. Are there any objections? Tinlinkin 07:41, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't feel strong about it either way. It goes fine underneath the name although it is not the best choice when there isn't a name in the infobox, particularly in complexes. But I guess it can go in the "Other" section since it has nothing to do with the name altogether. --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 21:52, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't think the two sections are necessary. --NE2 01:19, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
NE2, we are discussing where the accessibility icon belongs, not about the infobox features. Save that issue for another discussion. --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 01:52, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
It's perfectly relevant to question whether the sections are needed when we discuss which section to put something in. --NE2 03:17, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
The station info row is necessary because it describes the characteristics of the station, such as the lines served by it, services, platforms and tracks. The "Other" row is necessary because it shows "other" information (respectively), such as when the station opened and if it closed. So I would say the station info row describes physical characteristics, and the other row describes history of the station and others.
All in all, I would support TLK's move for the accessibility icon to the other section. --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 21:23, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Template:Infobox Station uses the sections "Station statistics" and "Other information". In order to be consistent with that infobox, this infobox should have two sections as well. Judging from the feeling that the Infobox Station template seems to be standardizing all rail station infoboxes, and from the template's discussion, we were granted an exception here to keep this infobox. Tinlinkin 07:27, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

ADA icon edit

I propose that we use the Image:International Symbol of Access.svg icon to replace the current icon in the infobox. The reason I propose this is because there are no such thing as free replacements for the ISA icon. I have read this from a fairly verbose discussion at a section of the village pump, and it truly makes no sense to use a symbol that hardly anyone will recognize in the public, therefore, using the symbol that does, as there is a lot of subway and bus vehicles and stations that use the decal. Any thoughts? --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 22:05, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

No. --NE2 06:54, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) Yeah, I was going to say: Has there been a resolution (consensus reached) on that issue? The last I heard, that image was non-free and has not been transcluded on any articles except the one that can justify its inclusion. I am not involved in the debate, but I believe the issue is still contentious. Tinlinkin 06:57, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't believe there is any such free image that can replace the "official" one. All the other iimages are made up.   is made up. And made up stuff on WP is a huge no-no. --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 14:30, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Take it to Wikipedia talk:Non-free content, not here. --NE2 15:21, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cross platform edit

I have added the "cross_platform" parameter ("Cross-platform wheelchair access available") based on the recent format of the V. See Forest Hills–71st Avenue (IND Queens Boulevard Line) for usage and appearance. I don't want to be the one to add this to all necessary stations. And I am not completely sure if this is even necessary. Tinlinkin 07:26, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The source to use is [1]. Tinlinkin 07:34, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ridership information edit

I've recently found a link that contains ridership figures for every station including 2006. Is there a way that we can incorporate the same style of Infobox Station's passenger information row and put it in this template? I'm pretty bad with template syntax. Geoking66talk 03:22, 11 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Documentation edit

Has the documentation for this template been kept up-to-date? Larry V (talk | e-mail) 00:07, 18 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think it has. Marc Shepherd (talk) 13:02, 18 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I guess I'll update it. Larry V (talk | e-mail) 00:29, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Staten Island Railway stations edit

How can we made this template usable for the Staten Island Railway stations? Can you give me an example put putting the template on one of the stations. The Legendary Ranger (talk) 22:34, 19 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

At the moment, the template is not quite ready to be used for SIR station pages. Some of the information it demands is not really relevant when discussing the SIR (for instance, "Line" or "Service"). However, it could be easily updated to make these optional. I will work on this in the next few days, and make an example of the Saint George article. Larry V (talk | e-mail) 00:37, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think that the SIR stations should receive their own infoboxes and we should create a separate one called "Infobox SIR". I'll ask Larry to see what he can do because I don't know a lot about infobox syntax. —Imdanumber1 (talk contribs  email) 15:54, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
What's wrong with infobox station? --NE2 17:57, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I guess this infobox can work. I'm surprised I didn't know about this before. I would suggest that we can make our own infobox for the SIR that matches the NYCS infobox. But I think the one you suggested could work as well. I also contacted Larry to see what he can do about making a SIR infobox because he knows more about template infobox syntax more than I do. —Imdanumber1 (talk contribs  email) 19:22, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
What's the rationale for creating a whole new template? Larry V (talk | e-mail) 06:09, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think it would be better to use a separate infobox for the SIR rather than modify this infobox for another use. This is the NYCS infobox after all. —Imdanumber1 (talk contribs  email) 16:49, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Overhaul edit

I have been working on an overhaul of this template. This overhaul will make the template more readable and more manageable.

I have added some more parameters to expand the infobox, many from Infobox Station, including:

  • address - this should replace borough and locale, but I am leaving those parameters in for now
  • former - for previous station names. Maybe there should be another field called "Also known as" to display names shown on station signage (and that have been rejected from the station name guidelines).
  • transfer, next_north and next_south to replace the many transfer and next station north/south parameters
  • next_north_acc and next_south_acc to display the next station north/south for ADA customers. I have been inconsistent on this in the past, but I think now it would be helpful. I didn't realize how many people find the NYCS so inaccessible.
  • A collapsible station service legend to show what the service symbols mean, in a more intuitive way than now. This I do need to work on.

I'd say the template is more than 75% complete, but I'll do more testing through the week. Comments, improvements, other stations to test, and questions are always welcome. --Tinlinkin (talk) 02:28, 26 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good work. I was going to suggest an option for former names. Hopefully it'll be up soon. --Zimbabweed (talk) 02:43, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'll go ahead and post the revised infobox. In the coming days I will visit all the station articles to update the parameters. --Tinlinkin (talk) 03:06, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Station service legend edit

Yes, the template should definitely be simplified and shortened. If you'll look at, for example, Canal Street (IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line), you'll see that a large part of the infobox is a list of symbols which apply to some stations but not to this one or most. The reader who sees the crescent or black dot symbol must use this list of mostly irrelevant symbols to find the words that explain it. Omitting the symbols and simply putting the words in their place would make the box easier to read for almost all stations. Only complex stations should use the complex version, if some are so complex that they need it. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:15, 9 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I didn't plan to use the full legend for all articles. But I need to create a template that builds individual rows of the legend as you have said. I plan to do that after I have converted all the station infoboxes to use the single next_north and next_south parameters among other things. Tinlinkin (talk) 18:28, 9 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Very well; someone is working hard at something I don't understand how to do. I feared the question was being ignored. Looking at the more complex stations, I see that they repeat the legend in each platform box. This does no good that I can see. The whole idea of the station service legend seems pointless to me. If the symbol method is made more efficient with hiding it until needed or showing only relevant rows, that's less bad, but still it seems a lot of work for the writer and puzzlement for the reader, for no benefit to either. Simpler just to use the words "Late night" and whatever, unless there's some kind of efficiency being created that I don't understand. Jim.henderson (talk) 03:55, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
What I'm trying to do is this: There are symbols abound in the station infoboxes. Right now, they are "explained" either in the alternate text or right after they show up under "Services". Maybe it's me, but I feel alternate text is not enough to explain a symbol. Whenever you see a symbol, you look for a legend, and that's what I'm trying to create. And it should be "collapsible" and already "collapsed" because I don't think it should be shown unless it's necessary. In particular, the station succession and transfer sections can have many sybols that are not explained before. For example, see Grand Central–42nd Street (New York City Subway)#IRT Lexington Avenue Line platforms. Note that there is a "late night" symbol for the 4 at the local stations. Since that symbol does not show up anywhere else in the article, it should be explained somehow. Alternate text is fine, but also inadequate, in my opinion. And replacing the symbols with text would really look ugly in that section.
For a draft of what I'm envisioning, check out User:Tinlinkin/Infobox tests 2#103rd Street and look at the legend there. Eventually that's what I want to have. Tinlinkin (talk) 04:37, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Let me ask, does the legend show up as already collapsed on your browser when you load the page? It works for my browsers. Tinlinkin (talk) 04:40, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oops, got busy with my pictures and forgot about this. Yes, I can see now that there are more complexities than I realized. I didn't for example realize that the next station space could have a time of day symbol not used in the service space. The legend has so irritated me that my preference would be to leave the symbol mysterious in this rare case, but that's my irritation showing, not my rationality. Yes, in both the MSIE 6 under XP SP2 that I'm using here, and the MSIE 6 under WinMe that I use more often, the legend shows as collapsed, and I figure that's the best or least bad way to do it. I don't use Opera or Firefox lately due to limitations on disk space and connectivity, respectively, for computers where they are installed. Well, I see that someone has been thinking hard about these questions, and rather than butt in any more, I should stick with what I have learned to handle in the past year, namely pictures of buildings and sometimes of subway stations. Have fun! Jim.henderson (talk) 02:36, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I can imagine that section looks irritating, believe me. Blame the NYC Subway system for all of its service variations! These symbols also show up in NYCS service articles, and I will reexamine the legends there. The shortened legends in stations will come soon; my only concern is efficiency. I will most likely use the text in the service templates, but since I had been away from Wikipedia for a while, I have to reacquaint myself of the mechanics of those templates. (I do appreciate your pics of subway stations. There could be more shots of the interiors, but something is better than nothing.) Tinlinkin (talk) 10:15, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I haven't forgotten about the station service legend. I have yet to make a decision about combining the templates in Wikipedia:WikiProject New York City Public Transportation/New York City Subway/Services and lines, which will affect the service legend. Tinlinkin (talk) 05:59, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Color boxes edit

I have added color boxes to the services for consistency with Template:Rail color box (although I did not implement that template here because of conflicts with styling). I did not add color boxes for the station succession or the transfers as they would look ugly in the current format. What do you think?

Now that there are color boxes in the services, I think the background header colors should be black for all infoboxes. Are there any issues with that? Tinlinkin (talk) 03:31, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Connection edit

It may be just me, but I do not see why connecting MTA services should not be in the template. If someone else knows how to add it, please do. Thanks. --AEMoreira042281 (talk) 03:20, 28 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

There is already a parameter named "connection." You may add the MTA services through that. Tinlinkin (talk) 23:53, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Four improvements edit

My knowledge is not enough, so I don't want to edit this template myself, but I want to make some improvements:

1. Replace

| data11   = {}

with

| data11    = {{ #switch: {}
    | Open-cut = Open-cut
    | Elevated = Elevated
    | Embankment = Embankment
    | Shallow column = Shallow column
    | Single-vault = Single-vault
    | #default = {}
  }}

2. Add a support for a new parameter called 'note'. I want to use it here and here to say:

| note = The MTA defines this platform set as two separate stations

Is there anybody going to perform this work? Thanks in advance. Vcohen (talk) 15:30, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

3 & 4. Two new parameters called 'layout' and 'map', similar to the 'image' parameter. I am preparing some graphic files to show station layouts (tracks and platforms) and their locations relative to the whole system, and I want them at the bottom of the infobox. Vcohen (talk) 07:39, 9 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I've added two options to the 'structure' list: 'Shallow column' and 'Single-vault'. These are the two most common types of underground stations in the NYCS, both having articles here, whereas just 'Underground' is not a structure at all. Vcohen (talk) 13:23, 11 October 2011 (UTC) I've added the 'map' parameter. Vcohen (talk) 20:39, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Change color boxes for SAS stations edit

Per a discussion at WT:NYCS, I recently moved the SAS station articles to (Second Avenue Subway) disambiguators and changed the line name to the same in the infoboxes. Does someone know how to change this template to still display the correct line color? The affected articles are listed at that discussion. Thanks! Listroiderbobtalkeditsmore 21:02, 11 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

We don't really need to modify the infoboxes, too, in the sake of removing redirects. Epicgenius (talk) 21:27, 11 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

"Selected" wrong wording edit

Limited rush hour trip lines are displayed as "selected rush-hour trips." However, the syntax of "selected" doesn't really apply to trips - perhaps it would be better to change "selected" to "select" or "limited". Mtattrain (talk)

Errors edit

The recent change added a large number of articles to Category:Pages with script errors:

Extended content

I guess they are missing map data or coords, and the template should check for this – or it could even supply its own map as they are all in New York. --JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 15:04, 19 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

I just undid the changes to the template again as it was adding pages to the error category by the second – I could refresh the category to see more. epicgenius you can use the sandbox for testing. Add the template from one of the above pages to the testcases page to see if a change works without errors, before adding it to a template used on thousands of pages.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 00:14, 20 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

I'm working on a sandbox version now. I am trying to segregate the coordinates in each infobox, so that it doesn't pull coords from the rest of the pags. epicgenius (talk) 00:28, 20 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
@JohnBlackburne and Mackensen: It should work now, even with multiple coordinates on the page. epicgenius (talk) 01:26, 20 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

2019 Subway ridership edit

@Epicgenius: Is there any way to edit this so we can input updated subway ridership for all the stations here so we do not have to edit every single subway article, similar to what you did with OMNY? Thanks.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 14:00, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Kew Gardens 613, yes, but it will have to be done on a subpage e.g. , , etc. Additionally, we have to ensure such a template is simple, because a template that is too large will end up going over the template-size limit, which is when templates on an article start to break. But yes, it is doable. I think it will become more important next year, when we have to make notes in the infobox that show that ridership has decreased everywhere due to COVID. epicgenius (talk) 14:17, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I just noticed the data is in Excel. That is awesome. Once I get my laptop, I'll begin working on these template subpages. The link is here. epicgenius (talk) 14:24, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

So basically documenting this here. I compiled this template for reference then used Vlookup to find ridership, percent, and rank. I then added a couple new columns in Excel (a | symbol on the left of the page name and a = symbol on the right), and moved the relevant column to just right of the = sign. I copied the relevant columns and pasted the raw data between the first and last lines of , , and , and removed all tab characters. epicgenius (talk) 21:53, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Adjacent stations edit

@Kew Gardens 613: @Epicgenius: I added a new parameter for former railroads (LIRR, NYW&B, NYCR) that can be filled by Adjacent stations, as demonstrated on Far Rockaway–Mott Avenue station. Cards84664 20:41, 21 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

2020 ridership edit

@Epicgenius: If we are invoking all ridership data from a template bank, it needs to appear in the infobox by default. Can someone fix this so we can remove all manual invocations on the articles themselves? Cards84664 00:43, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Cards84664, sure, this can be fixed. The way this is going right now is that the ridership is being removed gradually and manually. But I can add a temporary tracking category to make removing them easier. – Epicgenius (talk) 12:12, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Actually, it's all the article pages in Category:New York City Subway station articles with outdated ridership data, so I guess never mind about that temporary category. – Epicgenius (talk) 12:14, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Unsupported parameters edit

I added some tracking for unsupported parameters in Category:Pages using infobox New York City Subway station with unknown parameters and the subcategories. The most common are |bg_color=, |font_color=, |bg_color2=, |font_color2=, |pass_year=, |lat_dir=, |lon_dir=, |wifi=, and |wifi_custom_ref=. the |lat_dir= and |lon_dir= were left over after the conversion to |coordinates=. should any of these be kept? should we task a bot to remove all of these? Frietjes (talk) 22:39, 24 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Bike Paths edit

Should we add line to where the nearest bike paths are to each subway station… whether it would be trails or pedestrian paths on major bridges?

Example: Delancey Street/Essex Street station and Marcy Avenue station both would have bike=  Williamsburg Bridge

Or should we just place that under “connection” Mfs1013 (talk) 19:49, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
