Can someone add stats

Direct vs. Ad-hoc?

Can somebody explain the difference between this and an ad-hoc network? It sounds like the same thing to me. DanielDPeterson (talk) 20:36, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Ad-hoc requires one user to create an ad-hoc network, and the other user to join it. Wi-Fi Direct automates the process and creates more of a "turn it on and find others" user experience. Dataxpress (talk) 21:47, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

Yeah. It seems like this article is light on technical understanding. It looks like this is an addon to the underlying data link layer. It seems to include some auto-configuration of devices, exchange of WPA keys? also apparently one device serves as an access point. Apple comments incorrect

"iOS 8 will be gaining support for Wi-Fi Direct for its AirDrop, Handoff, Instant Hotspot and AirPlay features."

This is not true: iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite use Bluetooth +HS / WiFi to do AirDrop, Handoff and other features. Apple has never released support for WiFi Direct, and has announced no plans to. The cited link says nothing about WiFi Direct, and whoever put this is in just speculating. It appears it was put in to suggest that Apple is late to the game, as is typical of Wiki bias.

Mac OS X Lion?

Mac OS X Lion touts "AirDrop" as a new feature, which relies entirely on WiFi Direct. As it is one of the first major commercial releases of this technology, perhaps it could use a mention in this article? Dataxpress (talk) 21:48, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

According to this article AirDrop is not Wi-Fi Direct but something very similar. Can anyone confirm ? 1 Rockinrobstar (talk) 06:37, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

I was able to find this article which states that AirDrop uses a subset of Wi-Fi Direct features, and is based on it, but does not fully implement it. However, it does seem to be the first major use of the technology, despite not fully implementing it. 2 Dataxpress (talk) 05:41, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Last I checked, AirDrop used BlueTooth. I could be wrong, It has been a while since I read the instructions to my school's Macs. NickNackGus (talk) 01:37, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Security issues

A section on security would be helpful. There are several references to Wi-Fi Protected Setup, but according to that page WPS is so flawed that it is recommended users turn it off. Does the same apply to Wi-Fi Direct then? 108.234.224.230 (talk) 09:17, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
