What Would You Do?What Would You Do? (game show) – Since What Would You Do is naturally a question, the question mark makes for poor disambiguation. Another TV show, Primetime: What Would You Do? is mostly referred to by this name too. What Would You Do? should redirect to the disambiguation page. --BDD (talk) 17:11, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Game show?

edit

What Would You Do? is not a game show. It may have had some segments in which people played games, but that was not the main purpose of the show, per se. It was more of a reality show.

Some of the segments involved the host performing remotes in which he would lure unsuspecting passers-by into his pranks or shenanigans. Other segments involved polling the audience on a particular topic and then showing a video clip related to that same topic. Sometimes, audience members would volunteer to perform funny scenes just for entertainment, doing such things as playing in a "hoedown" band or something. Only part of each episode would be dedicated to people playing games, and even then the awards for winning were very insignificant in value.

A game show, on the other hand, is a program where people compete against one another, or against the game in general, for the duration of each episode, with the goal of becoming the game's champion. Awards on game shows are also relatively significant in value. None of this fits the description of What Would You Do?

Therefore, I propose that the title of the article be changed to either What Would You Do? (Nickelodeon) or What Would You Do? (reality show). Any thoughts? Any other suggestions? Greggens (talk) 19:33, 28 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

– Two separate (but obviously related issues) here:

  1. The 1991–1993 American TV program that aired on Nickelodeon is at What Would You Do? (game show) since a 2015 WP:RM. But, look at the topic on the Talk page above this one – this TV show is basically not a "game show", as the article makes pretty clear as well. The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows 1946–Present categorizes the show as "Humor/Audience Participation", not as "Quiz" (basically what the book calls "game shows"). Further, while this Entertainment Weekly article does lump this show in with other Nick "game shows" (though only in passing), contemporary articles on the program in Los Angeles Times describes the show "like a cross between a game show and "Candid Camera" " [1] and as "an audience-participation show with parents and kids" [2]. And a contemporary Variety source just calls it a "series" rather than a "game show" [3]. So I think this one would be better/more accurately disambiguated, as per WP:NCTV, by "TV program".
  2. Meanwhile, the American TV show broadcast by ABC is just incorrectly disambiguated under WP:NCTV no matter how you slice it. Disambiguating "by network" has been deprecated, and "ABC" not "ABC News" would be the network. In addition, this is not a "TV series" with "continuing story elements", but simply a "TV program". Based on all that, then if the Nick program is moved to "TV program" as well, then both need to be disambiguated "by year" under WP:NCTV, and so this one should be moved to What Would You Do? (2008 TV program); similarly, the Nick show should then be moved to What Would You Do? (1991 TV program). --IJBall (contribstalk) 21:34, 4 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
