Samoan cruise

2/20/06 I've edited this page to change the date of the Samoan cruise that is mentioned. My grandfather served on the USS California and I have a copy of the equator crossing certificate he received on that cruise. The certificate is dated 16 October 1909.

I can't find a reliable citation to this quote:

"On 9 April 1913, a liberty party from the U. S. S. California, including Corrie, went ashore at Guaymas. A number of the men visited saloons and came under the influence of intoxicating liquor. They caused some disorder in the streets, and Cipriano Lucero interfered. He wore no uniform, but his capacity of policeman was known at any rate to some of the seamen. A struggle broke out between Corrie and Cipriano Lucero, the latter trying to take from Corrie a beer bottle which he had in his possession. During the struggle a number of beer bottles were thrown in the direction of the fighters by some of the seamen. At least one of those bottles hit Cipriano Lucero but without doing him any serious harm. Another bottle hit Corrie, who staggered back and was seized by the right arm by a member of the ship's patrol just reaching the scene of the disorder. Cipriano Lucero then drew his revolver and shot Corrie, and as some of the seamen and one Schlenther, belonging to the ship's patrol, attempted to disarm Lucero, the latter fired another shot which instantly killed one Klesow, master-at-arms, United States Navy, who was trying to push back sailors, from the scene of the fighting."

@Minimac: It has been a while since you asked, but the incident is recounted in: "Alexander St. J. Corrie (U.S.A.) v. United Mexican States" (PDF). Reports of International Arbitral Awards. IV. United Nations: 416–417. 2006. The quote, or a summary of it, should probably be moved back to the article page. Without meaning to minimize the tragedy, the current sentence in the article, "she was involved in an international incident in which two of her crew were shot and killed", while true, makes the event sound more sinister and extraordinary than two crewmen on liberty getting killed in an altercation. --Worldbruce (talk) 05:32, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

Nice job. I'm glad you found a reference for it. I do remember back then trying to empty the backlog for citing quotes. I think what I forgot to do was remove the quotation marks while google searching, in this case missing out on that PDF file which proves to be a reliable reference. Opposed The article does reflect the name change, first sentence of the lead. She was California for longer than she was San Diego, all other ships of her class follow the format of going by their original names and it is well documented on the Pennsylvania-class cruiser page and on California's article page too. There is already a Redirect page for users that look up USS San Diego (ACR-6).Pennsy22 (talk) 05:29, 20 July 2017 (UTC)

Cause

First it's said that a mine shouldn't hit a side of the ship, rather the front. That makes sende. If it's wrong, then it should be removed. Then it's said it may have been a mine laid by U-156, but the problem with the mine hypothesis isn't addressed. The fact that the U-156 is reported to have been there doesn't add anything, since it was always known that there had been mines in the area. As such, all the U-156 hypothesis does is give a name to who may have been responsible for the mine hypothesis, which is itself flawed, unless it's the flaw itself that is not true.

I know of no sources discussing this problem, which puts WP in the usual quandary: to discuss things is OR, so incoherent things have to stand as they are.2001:8A0:F016:5100:159:914A:9933:801 (talk) 02:43, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
