More than one famous giant panda seems to have this name. The one I was looking up is female and was famous enough to be one of the BBC's female faces of 2011. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/dec/29/panda-row-bbc-top-women Gmackematix (talk) 23:42, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Two changes needed: I need help edit
I see two changes needed in this article. First, the tones needed to be added to the 'pinyin' transcription. This 'tian' is first tone. I don't know how to add the horizontal line diacritical mark to show that. (This my first involvement with Wikipedia, and I have no idea how to edit.) Second, the two sentences about toffee apples seem nonsensical. Or some kind of in joke? In any case, they need either to be explained, clarified and a source provided, or they should be edited out.NC Daoist (talk) 23:59, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- I have no idea how to do the language thing, but I have removed the toffee apple reference. Behavioral issues are not usually considered notable even if they are cited. If someone thinks it's important and can cite and also indicate why it's important, we can put it back. Don Lammers (talk) 13:43, 7 September 2012 (UTC)
- Tian Tian with no diacritical marks is correct per Wikipedia's naming convention that specifies that English is preferred. On diacritics, the policy says, "The use of modified letters (such as accents or other diacritics) in article titles is neither encouraged nor discouraged; when deciding between versions of a word which differ in the use or non-use of modified letters, follow the general usage in reliable sources that are written in the English language (including other encyclopedias and reference works)." Tian Tian → Tian Tian (male panda) – distinguish from Tian Tian (chess player) who is a human being and Tián Tián who is a female panda, and BBC Scotland reality TV star. - Oppose the panda in Washington is the primary topic per usage, since none of them has any long-term significance. The chess player's page gets on average < 4 views per day, the Washington panda's page > 40, the Edinburgh panda's page < 20 (and there is a lot of news about her this month). According to information on their pages, National Zoological Park (United States) gets > 2 million visitors per year, Edinburgh Zoo 600,000. So-called "BBC Scotland reality TV star" barely has any web coverage and is actually named "Qiao Tian Tian" or, per correct naming convention on en.wiki, Qiao Tiantian as she is a Chinese citizen living in China. - Perhaps the population of the Eastern US is bigger than Scotland's? The Scotland BBC panda was among women of the year (according to source) and is not "actually named "Qiao Tian Tian"" in any source, and that isn't even on the cards or been mentioned as an option in the other RM. - Reluctant, semi-weak support - obviously WP:DIFFCAPS is not WP:DIFFACCENTUATION, and while the claims of primacy for pageviews are interesting, I don't think this is a big enough margin, especially considering that anyone looking for the chess player or the female panda would have probably inadvertently landed on the male panda's page first.
