Original promo version?

Removal of dab line

The dab line "For the Iron Maiden song of a similar name, see Phantom of the Opera (song)." was removed in this edit on the basis that

"The Phantom of the Opera does not redirect here. Please see Wikipedia:Hatnotes#Disambiguating_article_names_that_are_not_ambiguous for an explanation of why this is an error."

Firstly, no-one claimed that The Phantom of the Opera *did* redirect here, and that obviously wasn't the rationale- the link is specifically to the other song.

Secondly, the allegedly-supporting linked article gives a case that *does* make sense and conveys the principle as well. No-one is likely to arrive at the Tree (set theory) article expecting to find something else- there's only one use of *that* and anyone searching or following links isn't likely to be confused by it.

On the other hand, Phantom of the Opera (song) and The Phantom of the Opera (song) are quite likely to be confused, as they have very similar titles and the definite article is frequently forgotten or mis-inserted. I know this because it's precisely the reason I arrived at the wrong article!- I was looking for the Iron Maiden song, typed in "The Phantom of the Oper..." and the autocomplete included the The Phantom of the Opera (song) in the list. Bingo! Er, no... I got the Lloyd-Webber one.

Which I already knew about, but wondered where the Iron Maiden one was, as I didn't know that lacked "The". No other confusion was likely so (e.g.) we don't need a link back to the main dab page, or to the novel or anything else. But we do need one for a very-similarly named song.

If the assumption is that "ambiguity" does not exist if two articles have slightly different titles, then I believe that this is mistaken; the purpose of dab hatnotes and dab articles is to meet the navigational needs of *people*, and it's quite likely that many people like myself *will* make this mistake (i.e. it's potential "ambiguity" in people's *minds*). In order to address your concerns about potential confusion between these two songs, I have moved this article to a title that cannot be confused with the other song and redirected the titles that are potentially confusing to the relevant disambiguation page. That's one solution, and almost certainly a better naming choice *if* we were starting from scratch. Unfortunately, we're not, and The Phantom of the Opera (song) still redirects here and until it doesn't, the {{redirect}} is needed.

Of course, the obvious response to that is that The Phantom of the Opera (song) should be repointed to the dab page anyway... which I'd agree with *except* that there are lots of indirect links intended to go to the Lloyd-Webber song article that would break if that was done without repointing them.

I appreciate that this might be somewhat fiddly, but it's one of the annoying but necessary implications of deciding to move a pre-existing page if one wants to do it properly (and something that's more than once put *me* off making moves that would otherwise be a good idea).

OTOH, I notice you're an admin, so you probably already know this :-) and (I'm assuming) know which tools might be helpful in doing this with less drudgery. All the best, Ubcule (talk) 21:03, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

I had already taken care of the redirect as well as the incoming links before you posted your message. The Phantom of the Opera (song) redirects to the disambiguation page, and there are no articles that link to that title anymore. Please let me know if you have any additional concerns. Different versions

This article talks mainly about the version by Brightman and Harley, which was released as a single. Not so much about the version in the actual staged musical and not at all about the version in the film release of 2004.

There are several versions in orchestration. I'm not familiar with the released version by Brightman and Harley for the pop charts, but I know that the version on the album of the original West End cast is a lot less rock-music-ish (which, IMHO, fits a lot better in the staged musical as a whole.) And later (potentially since the film release of 2004) the rock-music-ish version got reintroduced (to my frustration.) I'd love to see this article talk more about different version and re-interpretations. However, I don't have the answers and so far I have been unsuccessful finding information on this through search engines. Jurjenb (talk) 00:34, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

(Phantom of the Opera (Iron Maiden song) is potentially notable, but 1. it's not a single; 2. it does not currently have an article; 3. the lack of "The" in its title suffices as disambiguation.) The one disagreement I have is with the suggestion that "The Phantom of the Opera (Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley song)" would be a better name if we needed more disambiguation - I think ignoring the guideline might make sense in this case as I suspect Webber is far more associated with the song than any of its performers.
