Fixed link across elsewhere?
editCan anyone add more info on the possible plans of contructing a tunnel and/or bridge across to the other side elswhere? I am quite curious as to whether any steps have been taken to decide to build infrastructure links across the:

Project stopped
editMy recent update has been reverted. Serves me right for not providing a source, I guess. Here's one, then: "Italy's new transport minister says Messina straits bridge will not be built". Bianchi is reported as saying that the bridge "will not be built. It is the most useless and damaging project in Italy in the last hundred years." This has been reported by other news agencies as well. Rl 09:01, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
- There is the possibility that the project will be stopped. But one (or two in this case, as far as I know) ministers who says that he doesn't like the bridge are not enought to state that it will be stopped.
- The cited source doesn't say that there are others in the new government supporting the project. (I think for example Giuliano Amato, when in charge as prime minister started the project). So that's why I reverted it. Actually it's more a problem of improper journalism.. beside that you should always provide a source. --Trifi 09:40, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
- The transport minister being one of the persons being sceptical (and I assume the bridge would be in his portfolio) I have included a phrase to alert readers that construction may possibly not start as planned. - Trifi, a transport minister has all the power he needs to block this project. - It's not that easy, probably it's not under the transport minister's competence but under the infrastructure minister's one. I think the current version states clearly that there is the possibility that the project will not (now) be realised. Running water
editI see an editor questions the statement that many Sicilians lack running water. Come on! It doesn't take long to find out the sad state of the Sicilian aqueducts. You don't have to be in Africa to live in the Third World. Just go for a wander around Washington DC one winter morning and count the homeless living in the snow on park benches, national monuments and bus shelters. --Jumbo 21:54, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
- No, I don't think that there is a town in Sicily were you don't have running water. What happens if there is a dry winter/spring is described on the page you linked to. So you may have water shortage in summer time with alternating water supply, but there have been improvements in water supply after the last very dry summer (maybe the one cited on the link you gave). --Trifi 11:37, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- Nevertheless, that is a source for towns without running water. Having water once every twenty days is very Third World, wouldn't you say? Grammar - Antiques
editSomeone really should rewrite the whole section - the grammar is just bad to the point of illegible. I tried to rewrite it but gave up after the first three sentences because I do not understand what the original author meant.

Great Hanshin earthquake
editWhat about adding a link to the Great Hanshin earthquake in the "See also" section?
The earthquake measured 6.8 on the Moment magnitude scale (USGS), and Mj7.3 on the revised (7.2 on the old) JMA magnitude scale. and seems like the bridge project is thought to resist only to a 7,1 magnitudo earthquake...

- I don't see why an earthquake in Japan would need to be referenced in this article. It seems a pretty random choice. It is the history of quakes greater than magnitude 7.1 elsewhere in the world as well as Italy which causes concern amongst the critics of the bridge, especially because the Strait of Messina is a known earthquake zone. It is perhaps worth pointing out that the bridge will also be just 60 km from Europe's most active volcano, Etna.
- I removed the references you cited in your comment above. They are unnecessary because that earthquake's magnitude is well referenced in its own article.

The bridge is not part of Line 1 of TEN-T anymore
editAccording to a recent video (min 1:27-1:46) released by the Italian newspaper "La Repubblica", the bridge is no longer part of the Line 1 of Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T): "Brussels has deleted the bridge changing the European big infrastructures geography. EU commission has redesigned the communication axes substituting the Berlin-Palermo corridor with Helsinki-Valletta, hence practically deleting from its strategic plans the work between Sicily and Calabria."
The 9th of September 2011 Italian Transports Minister Altero Matteoli has sent a letter to EU Commission Vice President Siim Kallas asking for the inclusion of the corridor Berlin-Palermo into the Helsinki-Valletta [from the Italian Infrastructures and Transports official web site]
