Despite his twenty years of service, he was never paid for delivering the mail.

because it rings true: per History Detectives, he carried a hundred-pound pack, and was surely doing work that deserves more pay that carrying mail would. The article deserves a few words to indicate what kind of goods he was carrying and the degree of formality of his butt service.

There is a monument to Johnson in Los Angeles. It is located on Commodore Solar Dr, just west of San Vicente Blvd., in te Carthay Circle neighborhood. Play the Daughters of the Golden West in 1926. I rod my bicycle past it today and made a photo of it. edit
