Drop in Popularity edit

Apparently despite being the main Protagonist of the Franchise, Shirou's popularity is very low and a lot of fans dislike him for some reason. We are going to need to down play this if we are to make the Character important.110.159.184.9 (talk) 09:22, 24 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

No, we can't. If His popularity is Bad, then we have to show it and the evidence why. We cannot be bias, all because he just happens to be one of the most favorite Anime Characters of some people.--S. John Warrynn (talk) 16:24, 25 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hey He's still low on the popularity, what gives?--60.53.131.167 (talk) 14:13, 14 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

That isn't our problem, we only update the info.--S. John Warrynn (talk) 14:14, 14 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Capcom Protagonist status edit

Hey Are You sure he and saber are Capcom Protagonists?175.143.251.55 (talk) 13:30, 1 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Well for now they are technically considered Capcom characters due to many type-moon games being created and developed in collaboration with Capcom. So yeah.--S. John Warrynn (talk) 14:16, 14 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Reception Review edit

Could you also review my change to the reception area. This is what I'm planing to write:

Nishiwaki Datto, felt that Shirou's relationship with Rin Tohsaka was the most unrealistic of the three relationships as it was unromantic and mediocre, as well as one-sided, stating that Rin is too controlling and would only hold Shirou back in the end. The writer further stated that it was these factors the had caused him to alter the storyline of the Fate/stay night manga to make it more like the Fate route, and make Saber the main heroine.[1]

ANN's encyclopedia section is based on user generated content and is not a reliable source. On top of that, it doesn't evens support the quote you are trying inserting. —Farix (t | c) 12:14, 15 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Actually ANN is still a legitimate and recognized source, as many anime wiki pages still use the info from there, it is just the info he's using isn't accurate.S. John Warrynn (talk) 04:48, 16 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Also Don't simply make up sources or change the original source just to get the info into the Wiki. Even if the guys from Myanimelist interviewed the writer and got his opinions, their info isn't as credible as ANN.S. John Warrynn (talk) 05:03, 16 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

from Creation and conception edit

Writer Gen Urobuchi who has been involved in the making of series believes Saber's relationship with Shirou does not seem like a realistic relationship between a male and a female but a complicated relationship with a boy who became a girl. He further explains that it is not a relationship fueled by instinct like the relationship between a man and a woman but a romance of logic between two people who need each other from the heart. He thinks the Fate route could have been told as a story through the ancient Greek views on love. Urobuchi thinks the true heroine of Fate/stay night is Rin Tohsaka. He asserted that Shirou's relationship with Rin was the more realistic. The "Unlimited Blade Works" route depicts an equal relationship with a woman who becomes stronger than men. Rin and Shirou mend each other's weaknesses with their own unique strength. Also, Sakura's romance expresses the dark sides that women have, but Shirou's actions show that men can accept that and love them regardless.[2] Nasu responded to Urobuchi by saying that it is difficult to call the relationship between Shirou and Saber a relationship between a man and a woman. Saber has fought for a long time as the ruler of Britain but then turned into a woman all of a sudden and fell in love with Shirou. Shirou's consistent desire to avoid having Saber fight for him represented his love. Nasu further added that while Rin is female, her characterization is highly different from Saber that Shirou would still fall for her.[2]

I see. I thought the writers analyzing the relationship was valid but if not then there is no need to add it.Tintor2 (talk) 02:54, 19 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
It might be suitable for a "Character analysis" or similar section, but it's not about the character's conception or creation so it's off-topic for that section. Baffle gab1978 23:49, 19 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Never heard of an analysis in character articles. Would be some sort of subsection for the reception section? Additionally, I wonder if we that section might need to be more division due to how many characterizations Shirou has gone through ever since the original visual novel. And more critical reception might be added once reviews of the the rest Heaven's Feel trilogy movies as well as Oath Under Snow (if it's ever licensed) are made in the future.Tintor2 (talk) 23:54, 19 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

from Voice actors edit

One of the mistranslations from the series "People die when die are killed" became popular within the fanbase.[3]

From 'Critical reception' edit

{removed because the first point is not in the sources provided and the second point doesn't make sense (how does one 'obtain a resolve'? 'Resolve' is normally a verb.).

Both voice actor Kana Ueda and ReelRundown said Unlimited Blade Works makes Shirou's ideals of justice more interesting compared with those of his original depiction in Studio Deen's anime based on Fate especially because of their judgment by others and because Shirou obtains a resolve.[4][5][6]

Tried to clarify it and made it shorte.
(removed because I couldn't understand the point the WP author is trying to make; it's simply too garbled!)
while the second movie was noted to put Shirou in of most of difficult decisions he could ever choose due to the cost of his actions.[7]

Comments from Aoba47 edit

Below are some suggestions and comments about the "Critical reception" subsection of the "Cultural impact" section:

  • I am a little confused by what this sentence (Reviewers also offered different ideas regarding Shirou's role in the film Unlimited Blade Works.) means. I am assuming that it is a topic sentence for the paragraph, but I do not know what is meant by "offered different ideas". Maybe something like (Reviewers also commented on Shirou's role in the film Unlimited Blade Works.) to simplify the sentence somewhat.
  • I am not entirely sure what this sentence (The site also said Ufotable improved Shirou's characterization to the point they believed one was unlikable) means, specifically what the "one" is referencing. Could you clarify what is meant here?
  • The third and fourth paragraphs both appear to be about Unlimited Blade Works, but I was wondering if you could explain how you have structured the fourth paragraph? Maybe you could find some trends or similar ideas in critical commentary on the character in the movie to make a little bit of a more cohesive narrative (for instance: the character's growth, his relationships with other characters, etc.). I could be wrong, and this part could be completely fine as it stands currently, but this is the part where I become a little lost on what the central ideas was.
  • I am uncertain about how to include the removed text back into the article, though I would suggest looking through GAs and FAs on fictional characters to see if any of them include a "Character analysis" section or something similar to use as a model. I would think that it could even be incorporated into the article as a "Relationships" subsection (since that seems to be the primary focus on the removed text), but that is just a random idea.

Overall, these are my primary points. I have only focused on the prose, and I have not check any of the sources for accuracy or the like. I hope this helps somewhat. This is a very large article, so congrats on putting it altogether as I would imagine that it must be challenging to do. Have a great rest of your weekend! @Aoba47: Thanks for the response Aoba. I tried rearranging it some parts. I tried rearranging some parts, combining the Unlimited Blade Works since I realized many writers praised both Shirou and Archer's relationship. The analysis I mentioned, actually split them and put the information in the Creation and reception section by dividing Nasu and Urobuchi's comments.Tintor2 (talk) 21:08, 16 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Thank you for addressing this. Aoba47 (talk) 23:02, 16 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Main image edit

I have no idea what is the main image we could use. Would Takahashi's artwork from the 2004 visual novel be considered dated? There are also two anime images with him dualwielding his swords based on Unliminted Blade Works and Oath Under Snow but I'm not sure which might be the best choice. Pre-GAN comments edit

Expect these by Thursday. JOEBRO64 17:34, 24 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Okay.Tintor2 (talk) 17:34, 24 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Real life has gotten in the way a bit so I won't finish this today, but here we go. First the lede:

  • "Shirou Emiya is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the 2004 visual novel Fate/stay night, which was published by Type-Moon."
    • Done
  • "In Fate/stay night, Shirou is a teenager that who accidentally participates in the "Holy Grail War" alongside six other mages who are looking for the eponymous treasure, an all-powerful, wish-granting relice."
  • Done.
  • "Years before the game, Shirou was the sole survivor of a fire in a city and was saved by a man named Kiritsugu, who gave him the inspiration to become a hero before his last moments; this gave Shirou the idea of stopping murders in future fights."
  • Otherwise that's it for the lead. I'll get to the rest of the article later in the week. Sorry for the delay JOEBRO64 00:14, 29 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
    • Done.

Thanks for the feedback.Tintor2 (talk) 00:27, 29 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

No problem. I'll finish everything up by Friday. I'm taking a read of the first section right now and will have that up tomorrow. I apologize for making you wait a bit. JOEBRO64 22:23, 1 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • "The genders were swapped due to Nasu's experience writing the novel Tsukihime and Type-Moon’s belief a male protagonist would better fit the target demographic." Switch to active voice: "Nasu swapped their genders due to his experience writing the novel Tsukihime and because Type-Moon believed a male protagonist would better fit the target demographic."
    • Done.
  • "...something the Type-Moon originally wanted to make achieve..."
  • "...him to have too much individuality in order to make players..."
  • Should the storyline titles be in quotes or italics?
    • Fixed. Apparently, there was a confusion because the adaptations of the each route retained the same titles.
  • "To foreshadow Shirou and Saber's first meeting, the team of writers included a dream sequence in which Shirou sees Saber wielding the mythical sword Excalibur." Is there a way to revise this to avoid repeating Shirou and Saber? (note that I'd avoid going with "the former/latter" because IMO that's clunky)
    • Done.
  • Should creation and conception come after the appearances section? I feel like it's a bit confusing to discuss all these potential storyline routes without the reader having knowledge of what they are. JOEBRO64 00:04, 3 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
    • This is something I've been questioning myself a lot in the making of articles but I haven't seen any rule.
    • Rearranged.
  • "During the making production of the anime series Unlimited Blade Works..."
    • Done
  • "... making the author feel pressure..." Which author? Nasu?
    • Done
  • "Nevertheless, Ufotable kept the idea of Shirou not being able to smile too much due to his harsh past, with characters telling Shirou that he never smiles in some episodes..." I'd revise this to avoid repetition of "Shirou" and "smile", probably by combining the clauses in some way.
    • Done
  • "... the staff, most notably including series director Takahiro Miura..."
    • Done
  • "Nevertheless... Nevertheless..." Revise to avoid repetition
    • Done.
    • Done.
  • "Japanese pop singer Aimer composed the insert theme song..." What's an insert theme song? I'd either explain or remove "insert" JOEBRO64 21:43, 4 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

OK here come the rest:

  • "Takahashi believes people might want to watch the film again." Huh? This doesn't make much sense
  • "I beg you" should be "I Beg You", since it's a title.
  • "...who had enjoyed his role ever since his debut but could not believe the Fate franchise would extend it for over 10 years when the Heaven's Feel films were made." This should be rewritten to sound less puffery and informal.
  • "The voice actor Sugiyama said..."
  • "... who plays voices Miyu Satsuki..."
  • I only have two comments relating to the cultural impact section:
    • The Popularity section could be revised a bit to avoid WP:PROSELINE. For example, "In a poll containing male anime characters conducted by Anime News Network, he took both the 9th and 10th spots. In a Newtype poll, Shirou was voted the eighth-most-popular male anime character from the 2010s" could be simplified into "Polls conducted by Anime News Network and Newtype found Shirou among the ten most popular male anime characters."
    • I'd revise the Critical reception section a bit to better align with WP:RECEPTION, which would include paraphrasing quotes and avoiding the "A said B"/"A of B said C" structure.
  • I'm going to refrain from making comments on the Characteristics and Appearances sections because I'm not really well-versed in the subject matter. However, I will if you'd like me to (I'm watching the page so you don't need to ping me). Overall here I'd recommend making sure a reader who doesn't know anything about Fate/stay night would be able to understand (e.g. who/what characters/events/concepts are).

Sorry for taking so long, but here's the rest. Overall this is a nice article and could become even better with some more effort. Good work. JOEBRO64 01:42, 6 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I'll try oversee everything again.Tintor2 (talk) 16:06, 6 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Confusing/Badly Worded Sentence edit

The first sentence of the popularity section really needs to be reworded:

  • Merchandise, including rubber straps and figures, have been modeled after Shirou, including replicas of his twin swords.

I was thinking the replica sword part could just be cut out but I wanted other opinions first. — Preceding unsigned comment added by The Rat Zone (talkcontribs) 02:45, 16 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Reviews edit

I want to add some reviews for Shirou. Can I? 37.231.223.164 (talk) 23:54, 12 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

There are already multiple focused on every route from the visual novel, the anime adaptations, the spinoffs, etc. Is there really something this article miss? Maybe once the final Heaven's Feel movie is released there is potential for more coverage but adding more reviews from every series will make the section way crowded.Tintor2 (talk) 00:47, 13 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
