Vandalism on Shawne Merriman Page edit

It says "Going to Mcdonalds for salad is like going to a crack house for vitamins." As well as being completely unrelated to Shawne Merriman, I'm pretty sure it's also vandalism. I'm not an editor, but someone should change it.

I cannot find this remark anywhere in the current entry. Also, you and everyone else with an internet connection, can be an editor! ---Jackel 19:03, 31 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Also noted is that the link to his college was "University of Steroids, College Park", which is obviously not searchable. This has been changed to University of Maryland, College Park.

Someone keeps vandalizing this page with blatant editorializing as well as unsubstantiated statements and innuendo. For example, the section discussing his steroid suspension had been littered with the word "condom" or "condoms" for some reason. I've changed these. Merriman is also quoted as saying "Thank God for steroids" which allow him to fool fans into believing that his talent is "God-given". There's no source or research to show his ever having said anything of the sort.Greg jinkerson 19:42, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

injury clause edit

Lead paragraph says he is notable for not signing (or something) some sort of injury clause, but has no further information about this in the article. What is this talkking about? Pimlottc 16:47, 1 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

career will be tarnished edit

Many Players, including Carolina Panthers' star pass-rusher Julius Peppers have received 4-game suspensions for alleged steroid use. The line was removed as editorial. It's important to try and maintain a fair balance on both sides of an issue.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.44.84.63 (talkcontribs) .

There was a difference between Peppers and and Merriman.TheTruth2 17:10, 3 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why not enlighten us to those differences? I have no idea why you haven't been banned from editing yet. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.9.9.251 (talkcontribs) .

You're clearly interjecting your own opinions and biases into many of the articles you edit TheTruth2, most prominently sports-related articles. I kindly request (since I can take no other course of action) that you please try to maintain a neutral attitude on all subjects. This medium is not here to defame or promote athletes but rather to present relevant facts. This article, as it is, does that.

The quote is out of context in an encyclopedic entry. It belongs in a criticisms or similar "opinions" section, because as it stands, it is editorial... and outdated editorial at that; more events developed before Allen published his comments. Please try to understand that the media is not considered a creditable source in an encyclopedic entry except in discussions about the media's opinion.

LInks to articles career tarnished edit

None of these links offer a reputed "expert" or "critic" saying his career is now tarnished. The Bostonchannel.com article poses the question that it *might* affect his star status, the contracostatimes article doesn't even broach the subject, and the last link doesn't work, and seems to point to a blog, which is not a notable source. Until you can provide a notable source, stop trying to inject your own obvious bais into this article. ---Jackel 18:27, 10 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Merriman's apparent misconduct is a huge setback to the Chargers for a number of reasons. There is the immediate concern of losing a huge talent at outside linebacker, but possibly more harmful is the effect this will have on the rest of Merriman's career.

this is saying it is more harmful to his career then to the chargers d.

Steroid Explanation edit

His explanation for the cause of his positive steroid test is a claim. When it is discussed it should be phrased as "Merriman claims..." and "...he claims..." The way it was previously phrased it made it seem as though his claim that it was due to a supplement was a recognized fact. Quadzilla99 14:49, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Steroid Suspension edit

I noticed that someone had removed the weight discrepancy (253-270) as a reasoning why some believed Merriman guilty. I did a little research and it appears that he was, in fact, already 270 when he entered the draft, so that comment was inaccurate anyway. I wouldn't bother switching it back. Lights out dance in the Pats/Chargers playoff game. edit

The article claims that the only lights out dance was done by the Patriots. This is not true. In the first half of the game Merriman hurried Tom Brady causing an incomplete pass. He subsequently performed his lights out dance.

Info removed edit

I removed all this to the talk page, as even though it was listed under a "Personal life" header it's all trivia (see WP:TRIV). Some of it could be salvaged if it can be out in an encyclopedic context. Quadzilla99 09:30, 22 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Personal life Merriman has a number of tattoos. His favorite is that of a light switch being turned off. This tattoo is on his forearm and the text "Lights Out" adorns it. This has been his nickname since a high school game (in his sophomore year, no less) during which he knocked four of his opponents out in the first half. He is also responsible for giving Kansas City Chiefs' running back Priest Holmes a season-ending (and possibly career-threatening) concussion in Week 8 of the 2005 season. He also claims to have the phrase "extreme pain" written in Japanese.

Shawne Merriman is good friends with his Chargers' teammate Luis Castillo. The San Diego media has contrasted their seemingly opposite personalities: Merriman a flamboyant player with a penchant for the spotlight and Castillo a low key personality who shuns the spotlight.

On April 29–30, 2006, just one year removed from being chosen in the 2005 draft, Merriman served as a commentator on ESPN for the 2006 NFL Draft.

Left college after his junior season. In 2004, Merriman began an annual coat drive to benefit shelters in his native Prince George's County, Maryland.

His draft pick was the last significant part of the Rivers-Manning Trade.

He also starred on an episode of MTV's Exposed.

Request for Comment:measureable box edit

This RFC was created because the measureable box I created was deleted. A discussion was already started on the best way to present "pre-draft measureable" information in the Wikiproject NFL discussion page. I would appreciate if deletion and relevance decisions were based on consensus rather than personal opinion. Thank You.Eeks2284 23:34, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Close off the article to unregistered editors/crack down on vandalism edit

I just had to switch it back to the third previous page in the history today because someone did a "Mark McMerriman" spam article libeling him and referring to the Chargers as the Chokers. This page should be closed off from universal editing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.181.231.74 (talk) 00:04, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fire? edit

I think there should be some mention of his encounters with fire.

Merriman was both. A lot. And more.

The first time his apartment burned down – yes, the first time – it was because a trio of thugs threw a Molotov cocktail through a window trying to intimidate his baby-sitter, who knew too much about a murder.

Merriman was 11.

He still recalls the smoke in his eyes and nostrils.

Not six years later, half the family's house burned in a fire started by candles lit for warmth.

He lost everything and ended up living with one of his coaches the rest of his junior year.

Merriman was not home when the fire started. He had gone to a friend's house after getting home and finding there was no electricity or heat, a common occurrence that he discussed with his friend in only vague terms.
