Whether "Marine" is capitalized as a proper noun (as is Democrat or Catholic, for example) or treated as a common noun (like soldier or sailor) is debatable, and it has been debated without resolution. Both the AP style guide[1] and the New York Times[2] capitalize it. Either way, an article about a dog memorial in Guam is not the place to decide it.
