Student Numbers edit

Since when does NUIM have 14,000 students? The source referenced for the academic year 2008-2009 states there were 7,585 students enrolled that year, of which 6,136 well full time, 1,178 were part-time and 326 Erasmus or distance. Does anyone have an up to date source? Otherwise the numbers need to be corrected back to ~8,000. PolarIce (talk) 19:16, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I suggest that any detailed pre-1997 material be moved to the St Patrick's College, Maynooth article rather than this one. This article should have a summary only of the pre-1997 history. Djegan 16:44, 8 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Detailed pre-1997 material shouldn't necessarily be moved to the St Patrick's College, Maynooth article - Maynooth College has been in existence for over 100 years - it is necessary to reflect this. OperaticNun (talk) 16:49, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Does anyone know the design of the NUI Maynooth scarf, or if it exists? Thanks Black and Gold, as fas as I'm aware OperaticNun (talk) 11:23, 30 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism (?) edit

These were listed as societies:

  • Welsh Language Society
  • Welsh Heritage Club
  • Welsh Electro Association
  • Friends of Phillip Evans
  • Welsh Drama and Film Societyl
  • John Toshack
  • Welsh Rock Society
  • Stereophonics Enthusiasts
  • Welsh Birdwatchers
  • Lovers of Welsh Arachnids
  • Welsh Debating Society
  • Welsh Christian Alliance
  • Preachers of Wales
  • Welsh Boxing and Brawling Club
  • Welsh Mining Bond

Funny, but vandalism nonetheless. —Preceding unsigned comment added by OperaticNun (talkcontribs) 11:55, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Notability edit

The notability of a lot of content on this page is questionable at best. The article reads as if it has been written & edited by the PR teams of the various clubs & societies within the college and/or the college's communications office. The names of plays that have been staged by the Drama Society, or the abbreviations of every degree that can be awarded by the college seem to be too much to have on an encyclopedia article on a topic.

I think there's some good material here that could make a great article, but for that to happen, a lot of material needs to be cut. People can always go to the university website for the minutae of the information. Any thoughts? Dave (talk) 11:03, 5 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I agree. I'll set about altering student activities section. BeachRust (talk) 05:32, 27 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Quite frankly editing the clubs & societies section down to what it was was absurd. It doesn't give anyone any perception of what clubs and societies are actually like in the university which is pretty important - Garethppls (talk) 23:31, 8 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Frankly, I don't think it was. What I think is absurd is having a list of every club & society that the college has, along with a soundbite from each one as to why they're great. Having a list of clubs & socs doesn't let people know anything about college life, and 99% of clubs & societies are mirrored across all the universities.
Now, if you took out the unusual elements of C&S in Maynooth and put those down, it would be worthwhile. An Cuallacht is one of the oldest societies in the country, and the GLB is the oldest GLB soc in the country, iirc. L&D put on a 7 day debate for RAG week that ran 24/7; the Gospel choir currently are touring with Jack L; Galway Cycle (could be one of the oldest annual student cycles?) has raised over €500,000 for children's charities to date.
To be honest, I think what sets Maynooth apart from the other college should be highlighted, rather than the PRO of each club making sure theirs is added. Why not have a requirement of notability to be mentioned? Quality not quantity surely? Dave (talk) 18:02, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
One could argue that all societies are notable in numerous ways for their contribution to the university. Picking out the LGBT soc, or An Cuallacht wouldn't give any perspective as to what societies are like in Maynooth. One could argue that other societies are equally notable to either of these (JPII would be an example). That said, I think the page should give general information about the university, and at least general information about clubs and societies. Indeed, quality not quantity, but quality means having decent information about the clubs & socs scene which your suggestion wouldn't do adequately. Garethppls (talk) 15:43, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Do you really think it's a notable thing about Maynooth that it has a football club? If all societies have made notable contributions, as you have said, well then add these notable contributions, not simply the name of a club or society that you will find is common to every college in the country. Quality does mean having decent informtion, not just a list. Dave (talk) 15:31, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Coat of Arms? edit

An image of a coat of arms was added in May 2019 - I don't recognise it (and I work at Maynooth), and I was wondering if this is a mistake? It's certainly not the logo used by the university anyway. If it isn't accurate, I propose removing it and replacing it with the existing logo. Otherwise, casual visitors to the Maynooth University website and the Wikipedia site might not realise it's the same institution. Educationhousejavert (talk) 12:32, 5 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. I cannot find a source for the image, and the reference provided simply links to another wiki. Removed from the page pending clarification. —Legoless (talk) 13:20, 10 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

The coat of arms was granted by the Chief Herald of Ireland in 2016. Will restore and add a link to the document on the National Library of Ireland website Waistlesselk (talk) 18:45, 11 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

The first reference provided for this coat of arms indicates 2016 but provides no source. This website also says: "We have no information on the meaning or origin of these arms." The second reference is to a .PDF presentation lacking author or date that provides no further evidence or source to the University adopting this coat of arms. Both fail WP:RS. A quick google search reveals no announcement by the University or any other news source. I suspect there is some confusion here with St. Patrick's College. AugusteBlanqui (talk) 20:35, 11 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure about the first reference, but the second was published by the National Library of Ireland, which I would consider to be a reliable source. My understanding is that Maynooth University must have applied to the Chief Herald for a grant of arms that was subsequently granted in 2016, but has not yet decided to use its coat of arms on logos etc. I am not sure if the arms have yet replaced the symbol on degree certificates. There is certainly no confusion with SPCM, given that the description refers to the university's links to the seminary and six disciplines. It appears the university must have decided not to make an announcement after the arms were granted, which would explain the lack of evidence following a Google search.Waistlesselk (talk) 18:37, 12 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
Degrees display the NUI coat of arms and the MU logo. It is odd that an application would be made to the Chief Herald under the name Maynooth University, as the entity's legal name remains "National University of Ireland, Maynooth". —Legoless (talk) 00:04, 13 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
As a follow-on, the Office of the Chief Hearld (based in the National Library of Ireland) does indeed have a link to that PDF document (https://www.nli.ie/en/heraldry-in-ireland-1943-2018.aspx), and presumably it did grant a coat of arms to Maynooth University in 2016. Nonetheless, it's never formally used and I dare say for most of us this is the first time we've ever heard of it. I think the page should prioritise the university logo, as it is the most commonly used symbol, but there should be a place for the arms too. Waistlesselk has brought to our attention something that almost nobody knew of (for which thank you) - perhaps it could be included in a sub-section in the body of the article? Educationhousejavert (talk) 16:01, 13 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
I have restored the current logo to the info box and the coat of arms can now be found in a subsection in the article Waistlesselk (talk) 21:37, 14 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Shortening edit

I judiciously shortened some parts of the article. It sounds like PR to me, likely written by students or the administrative staff to bolster their own relevance. Most citations are from the uni website itself. Tons of irrelevant/not notable subjects (prices for housing, furniture available in the housing, some student awards in the 70s, etc). If someone has an issue with the shortening, I'm happy to re-instate some things but it has to be sources better with secondary sources and pass the notability criterion. Furthermore, the lists and tables are not how Wikipedia is written, WP:USEPROSE. I'm still not happy and will perhaps shorten the upper part of the article as well later.
