Nationality
editI am from HK as well. His nationality is Chinese and Canadian. You can only say he is from Hong Kong and has a Hong Kong passport. but the HKSAR passport, his nationality is still Chinese. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.78.249.151 (talk) 13:26, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
This has got to stop. His nationality is "Hong Kong", not "China". I am from Hong Kong and I know what I'm talking about. —Preceding unsigned comment added by GoodNite AmyLee (talk • contribs) 22:52, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Fair enough, and my wife is from China she knows what she's talking about too. I would also add that since 1997 the sovereignty of Hong Kong was handed back to China and henceforth all people from Hong Kong now have nationality Chinese not Hong Kong. Tell me where did people from Hong Kong come from before the British took it over? I thought so, maybe a little national pride is what's needed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.233.144.221 (talk) 00:53, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- Meanwhile I'm from Britain and don't much care beyond keeping the article in legible English. This dispute is similar to the one regarding N.Irish vs Irish vs British. In the end what does Fu actually describe himself as?--Koncorde (talk) 22:21, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
- In the end what is factually correct? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.36.37.93 (talk) 10:02, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- What is factually correct? That he is from Hong Kong is what is factually correct. Beyond that is guesswork or attributing a nationality to a person who would not readily identify themselves as such? The suggestion that the rest of the web is incorrect apart from yourself is facetious by the way.--Koncorde (talk) 19:29, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Maybe you should ask Chinese people whether he's from China or not. In that case Ding Junhui's page should be changed to the city and flag that he is from too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.36.37.93 (talk) 16:06, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
- I should also point out that I emailed the BBC to make a complaint about it and they agreed that it was wrong for them to say he's from Hong Kong when for the last 11 years Hong Kong has been a part of the People's Republic of China. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.36.37.93 (talk) 16:11, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
- Do Chinese people count when it comes to retroactively applying a nationality? And the BBC isn't the be-all of the internet, particularly as they make fundamental gramatical errors at every turn.--Koncorde (talk) 23:12, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Does the ruling country that a city is in count when it comes to nationality? I guess Scottish people aren't from the UK then? Especially given that Scotland is more of a country than Hong Kong is, by a long way. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.36.37.93 (talk) 14:24, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
I am from HK, and I suggest that the nationality should be Hong Kong. The main reason behind is that Hong Kong has a seperate governing body for sports, and it is a traditional to state the nationality of sportsmen from Hong Kong as Hong Kong. Hong Kong China maybe, but definitely not China. It's just like the cases of Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland, and England in football. You won't name all those teams as United Kingdom. (Freddieyam (talk) 07:27, 25 June 2008 (UTC))
Unsourced nicknames
editI am from hong kong and i've heard him being referred to as the hong kong fui in our triad run snooker halls —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.202.162.240 (talk) 00:58, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
It was me who wrote the Nickname: Cue-Man-Fu. I have heard it myself on more than 3 occassions by the current MC, Rob Walker. Rob Walker is also contemplating calling Marco Fu, "Full of Eastern Promise" and Peter Ebdon, "The Force" - he said so himself during a mid-session interval where Hazell interviewed him. I repeat, these are not bogus names. The name, "Hong Kong Fuey" is also an official World Snooker nickname, despite being horrendous in its own right. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.139.27.172 (talk) 21:25, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
I reverted an edit that unsourcedly assert that "in Scotland" (why Scotland in particular?) that he is nicknamed both "Fushti Fu" and "Kung Fu". This sounds pretty darned silly, and I think it should be reliably sourced before being added back in. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 19:41, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- I have now reverted two more alleged nicknames. User 80.177.113.220 (talk · contribs) says it best:
- [T]here is very little evidence that his nickname is "cue-man-fu" either. Try googling it - the only hit you'll get is the wikipedia entry. Even if you take the hyphens out, you only get a three times repeated blog post from October titled Beware Cue Man Fu.
- There are several "anecdotal" uses of Hong Kong Fuey when you google it, leading me to believe that it is the most popular nickname for Marco Fu.
- It may even be possible that the one blog mentioning "cue-man-fu" got the nickname from Wikipedia. The idea that Wikipedia is creating new "facts" is certainly an exciting one! But probably not the intended purpose of Wikipedia.
- Per WP:V, WP:RS and (since Asian stereotyping is usually considered offensive) WP:BLP, these unsourced and dubious nicknames aren't appropriate to include. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 21:18, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- This is a case where I don't have a direct web site source at the moment, but he has also been nicknamed "Kung Fu" by the Swedish commentator on Eurosport, and is listed with that nickname on his profile on the Eurosport web site. I'm currently unsure if it's an invention of Eurosport, but it has been used by reasonably high profile persons involved in the snooker business anyway. — Northgrove 18:09, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
GA Review
edit- This review is transcluded from Talk:Marco Fu/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.
- Lead
- Needs to be substantially longer per WP:LEAD. The lead needs to summarise the entire article.
- Early career
- This section flits around a little chronologically. For example, I think his birth should be mentioned first.
- First year
- Flits around again. His ranking in 2001 is given before his ranking in 1998.
- "Fu's subsequent performance was disappointing, and he slid back down the rankings." POV and needs referencing.
- Rise
- "Fu is a prolific break-builder.[7] He achieved his highest break of 147 in 2000 at the Regal Scottish Masters[4] and has compiled 147 competitive century breaks during his career." Short paragraph. I would move this to another paragraph.
- "terrible season" POV and needs a reference.
- "suggested he would not go far in the tournament." POV and needs a reference. Surely this is what snooker, like any sport is about anyway? Form goes up and down.
- "In what Snooker Scene magazine described as "one of the greatest upsets in the history of the game"," Needs a reference.
- First title
- "Marco had used Griffiths for a short while some years ago" Do you know when and for how long?
- "and it was an emphatic fight," POV and needs a reference
- Recent times
- Very short and stubby. Is there reason for a new section at this stage?
- "Following a disappointing loss in the previous tournament," POV and needs a reference. Why was it disappointing?
- Style points
- Scores should use endashes, e.g. 5–4, per WP:DASH
- Seasons should also use endashes (not slashes), e.g. 2000–01 season, per WP:DASH.
- Emdashes should be unspaced per WP:DASH. A number of other hyphens within text need to be consistently emdashes.
- References should be placed immediately after punctuation where appropriate, and there should be no space between the punctuation or word and the ref tag. See WP:CITE.
- Numbers and their units need to be broken by non-breaking spaces, e.g. 147 competitive centuries.
- Numerals less than ten should be spelt out in full per WP:MOSNUM, except for scores.
Quite a bit to do, but I'll put it on hold. Peanut4 (talk) 21:55, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your review, Peanut4, I'll try and improve the article using your points above when I have the time. - Nick C (t·c) 14:01, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
- No worries. I'll try keep it on hold for an extended time if you want. It may also be worth trying to get a third party copy edit. Peanut4 (talk) 14:03, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
- Could you put it on hold for an extended time please, I'm going to be busy in the next few weeks (maybe months), so I might not always have time to check Wikipedia. Thanks. - Nick C (t·c) 16:02, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
- The normal timeframe to put an article on hold is seven days. I will extend that a little bit. It might be best to update any progress on my talk page at regular intervals. Peanut4 (talk) 16:15, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

"He is best known for" is going to be hard to verify and comes across as POV. Stick to listing his greatest successes in terms of ranking points? --Dweller (talk) 14:12, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Place of residence
editFrom the intro: "He currently resides in Happy Valley[8]", and from the Personal life chapter: "He currently lives in England with his wife Shirley". So where does he live? - FakirNL (talk) 08:24, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
The reference cited in support of Happy Valley is a broken link to the worldsnooker.com website. A search of that website turns up a statement that he lives in England. So I corrected Happy Valley to England. Sayitclearly (talk) 16:31, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Locality of birth?
editDoes anyone happen to know where exactly in Hong Kong he was born/raised? I ask only because I used to live there (in Stanley) in the '60s and am curious. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 176.248.159.54 (talk) 09:11, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Chinese name box
editLee, I'm not sure how in line it is with general practice, but I'm somewhat skeptical of the need to use the {{Infobox Chinese}} template here. It comes across as basically a separate infobox below the main infobox, which feels weird, and looking at its contents, it's about the name rather than the person, something that's already covered in the parenthetical in the first sentence and the hatnote ({{Family name hatnote}}; personally I prefer {{efn Chinese name}}, but I'll leave that up to you as the primary author). {{u|Sdkb}} talk 12:00, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
- I'll likely remove it - I didn't even realise I was the primary author, only been tightening and fixing over the last couple days! Haven't quite finished the fixes, but the prose does need tightening. I haven't seen who added the box, but yeah it's a bit much.
