Talk:List of songs about Rio de Janeiro

Just one example.... edit

""Virginia Plain" by Roxy Music" is about Rio?? Martinevans123 (talk) 22:33, 2 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Considering how nebulous a concept it is, and the inevitable urge people have to add a song, perhaps it should be List of songs that reference Rio de Janeiro. Doctorhawkes (talk) 01:57, 3 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, why not have List of songs whose lyrics include the word Rio?? We could work our way round all cities in the world, or maybe just all words... Martinevans123 (talk) 14:10, 3 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ok, maybe the song is "about The South of France" or "about the rock-star lifestyle". How is it ever "about Rio"?? [1]. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:40, 22 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
It just gets worse. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:44, 6 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
And of course, as with e.g. "Rio Antigos" by Los Indios Tabajaras, it can be a song without any words at all? Don't get me wrong... a great tune, a great band. But how is that a "a song about Rio de Janeiro"?? Martinevans123 (talk) 22:49, 10 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Songs and tunes edit

Songs usually have words... so they can be "about" something? Should this article include tunes as well as songs? Martinevans123 (talk) 21:39, 22 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

The article Song says this: "The word "song" is widely misused by people in the popular music industry to describe any musical composition, whether sung or played only by instruments." Just sayin' Martinevans123 (talk) 18:42, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Here's another one: Laguna - "Spiller From Rio (Do It Easy)". Martinevans123 (talk) 12:47, 20 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Not moved. Consensus is pretty clearly against the proposed move. bd2412 T 18:38, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

List of songs about Rio de JaneiroList of songs about Rio de Janeiro and titles which refer to Rio – The list contains many items which are just instrumental tunes, not songs, i.e. they have no words. How can these be "about Rio"? Of those which are songs, many are not "about Rio" at all, but just mention the name of the city in the lyric or reference its culture in some way Martinevans123 (talk) 08:35, 24 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • Please feel free to suggest any alternative title that's not "overkill", Alternatively, could you explain to me how any tune or song which has "Rio" in its title is automatically "about Rio"? (Not that the article currently has any sources whatsoever, of course). Many thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:11, 24 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
In that the composer has some vague feeling about Rio? An instrumental named "Rio Meu" etc. is unlikely to be inspired by or dedicated to a pet or person called Rio. In ictu oculi (talk) 17:38, 24 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Unlikely? perhaps? Yes, sure one could guess. But we currently don't even have sources to support the well-know songs. Maybe that's the underlying problem? I'm still a bit confused by use of the words "songs" and "about"here. Even User:Doctorhawkes' suggestion of "List of songs that reference Rio de Janeiro" would be better? • Comment: This page is very problematic, but as an observer of a lot of bad articles lately, it seems Wikipedia editors favor keeping articles which violate WP:OR and WP:V. --Gonnym (talk) 15:43, 31 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment. I have every sympathy with the nomination, this list is no more than an eyesore and should be deleted, but chance is a fine thing. The problem is what does 'about' mean? If we could agree a wording and create a template to put on all the Lists with the word 'about' in the title we might get somewhere. The wording should include and mention referenced and verified, where the subject matter is predominately 'about' the subject and not just mentioned in passing or even only in the title. --Richhoncho (talk) 10:34, 1 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per IIO. Seems like a solution looking for a problem. Song, musical ditty, title... it's not very hard to figure out what this title refers to, and the proposed title is the opposite of WP:CONCISE.  — Amakuru (talk) 14:29, 1 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

So, could we have another go with e.g. "List of songs that reference Rio de Janeiro"? Or do folks wish to try and fix the huge sourcing deficit first? I mean, for most entries there's not even any evidence they actually exist, let alone that they are "about Rio de Janeiro"? Martinevans123 (talk) 18:46, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Over a year later and I don't see we are any further forward, e.g. the latest addition, as usual wholly unsourced, is "The Big Brass Band from Brazil" by Art Mooney & His Orchestra. A quick check on YouTube shows that this one exists, here are the lyrics: A great song to be sure. But the word "Rio" appears once, in the opening line of the first stanza. How can this sing be "about Rio"? Martinevans123 (talk) 18:00, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
