Talk:List of Surrey County Cricket Club players

Pre-county club players edit

The present list includes several people who played for Surrey teams before the county club was formed in 1845. Unless there is a clear intention to limit the scope to players who represented Surrey County Cricket Club in first-class cricket, it would be best to rename by moving to List of Surrey cricketers. ----Jack | talk page 10:11, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

In the interests of consistency, in choosing between those two options (limiting the scope or renaming the list) it would seem best to fall in with whatever is done by the majority of the similar lists for other counties. However if each list goes its own sweet way (or the issue has simply never been considered) then it might be a good idea to raise the isue on the project talk page in the hope that we can get agrrement on how all of the lists should be handled. Sections N to Z are complete and in the standard format. Sections A to M are in the standard format but the lists are incomplete with two things to be done. One is to check that all the players named played for Surrey CCC in a first-class match; almost certainly some did not and need to be weeded out. The second thing, obviously enough, is to provide an article name. Many of the players will have articles already but I expect most of these unnamed items to be redlinks and so a suitable name will be chosen.

I have removed all names of pre-1845 players which should never have been in this article. This has highlighted the danger of copying from a category listing. All the players named currently were associated with the club. Jack | talk page 17:09, 1 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for all your work on this. My own preference would be to widen the scope slightly to also include the handful of modern players who have played for the county in List A or 1st team T20 fixtures only. (There may not be any in the List A category, but I think Yasir Arafat and Dirk Nanes are two who have played in T20 only, and there may be a few more.) If we 'do decide to exclude them, then I think we should explicitly mention that in the lead. I know it's implicit if we say "first-class", but there may be a few readers who won't realise that excludes List A and T20. JH (talk page) 22:02, 1 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi John. There are a couple of these lists which have a ListA section at the bottom, though they are ostensibly limited to first-class. Glamorgan is one, I think, and one of the universities. I can include a brief emphasis on first-class if you prefer and this could be repeated in the other club lists. By the way, I think Arafat did play first-class for Surrey. He was perhaps in the same boat as Aaron Finch last season. He was here for the bash only but, when Gale got himself banned, Finch was co-opted into the championship team (with no complaints from anyone in Yorkshire!).
These lists mostly follow the same format after someone introduced it for the oldest county, Sussex, but with slight variations. Hampshire and Somerset are in leagues of their own thanks to excellent work by their respective usual suspects. Surrey was in bad shape and so are Notts and Warwicks, the other two that need some work. I would like to ensure that they are all complete to end of 2014 before the new season starts. Thanks. I agree that consistency across counties is desirable, and I'm happy with the revised lead. JH (talk page) 09:45, 3 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Excellent. I'll carry on with the players when I have a bit more time. Thanks again. Jack | talk page 21:27, 3 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Players without articles edit

The red links here are a very useful way of checking which players as yet lack an article. My own idea of the most serious omissions are Harry Harrison (I don't think anyone in cricket ever called him Henry) and Mike Willett. If/when I have the time and energy I'll try to put that right - unless someone else does so first. JH (talk page) 18:44, 22 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Surrey is one of four counties with a long list of redlinks. The others are Kent, Middlesex and Notts. Interestingly, these are four of the five oldest county clubs (Sussex is complete). Warwicks has some redlinks too but all players at the other counties are bluelinks. The universities are another matter. A few of us are trying when time allows to reduce these redlinks so any help you can give will be, well, a great help. Thanks very much. Jack | talk page 05:43, 24 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
I've been gently working my way through Warwickshire's redlinks for the past few months, but I don't have a lot of time currently. So it's mostly nudging things forward when I have a spare minute or lose concentration on the things I should be doing. I'll move on to another county when I'm through with Warwickshire... but maybe not Surrey if you've got it covered. Johnlp (talk) 09:34, 24 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

William Collyer. I'll try and get to him later, but there are two. The Surrey one currently doesn't have an article and is much more important. I'll almost certainly get this done today, but if anyone wants to do it beforehand feel free - I suspect we need to move the one we have (although he looks academically quite interesting) and possibly have a dab page? Thanks, and well spotted! JH (talk page) 14:45, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
DAB created and article at William Collyer (Surrey cricketer); I reckon I've got the links sorted more or less, but you never know - can't find much on him actually, but I'm sure there must be a book about Surrey chaps. His CA suggests an Oxford link that I'll follow up later - I think the match for Rugby School in 1861 is probably a mistake - that's much more likely to be William Collyer (lawyer), a one match fc player who I can find shed loads more about (and likely can add some from a Norfolk source when I get round to it as well...). I had a look in David Lemmon's excellent history of Surrey, but he doesn't appear in the index. I'll take a look in the online 1909 Wisden, where there should be an obituary than might contain something useful. JH (talk page) 21:21, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Wisden seems to have overlooked his death, which is annoying. I looked in both 1909 and 1910, in case they were late in learning of it. JH (talk page) 21:28, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
I know. By that time Wisden had generally got its obituaries sorted. I’ll look in The Times as well. Blue Square Thing (talk) 22:50, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Current players edit

The article intro says "Current players are shown as active to the end of the 2015 season." So we're already a year out of date, and that is likely to be a recurrent problem every year. Wouldn't it be better for current players not to specify an end year? That way, only those players who retire or change counties during or at the end of a season would need their entry updating, which will be a much smaller number.
