Missing games edit

I have no idea of how to edit the article page, or even if I will manage to post this to the talk page... But just wanted someone to know that there is at least a game missing: "Dungeons & Dragons Tiny Adventures", a Facebook online game. As there is another FB online game there I thought it maybe should be in there too... Thank you. Feel free to delete this comment of mine after editing the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 187.33.242.195 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added February 2015

You're also missing ADVANCED DUNGEONS & DRAGONS™ TOWER OF MYSTERY a.k.a. Tower of Doom for Intellivision - https://history.blueskyrangers.com/intvcorp/towerdoom.html

"Tower of Doom" is definitely listed on this article. BOZ (talk) 06:15, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't see the Intellivision title, no. There are two different titles related to DnD that were released as Tower of Doom. It's a common misunderstanding. Please read the attached link.

Not sure if it is appropriate for the page but Solasta: Crown of the Magister is based onto the 5th edition's system reference document. As such it seems to me appropriate for inclusion. Thenub314 (talk) 10:21, 23 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

The article says it uses a variant of the system, and I'm not seeing anywhere in the article that it is a licensed D&D game. BOZ (talk) 12:51, 23 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
The Steam store page has the following statement: "Wizards of the Coast granted Tactical Adventures a license to use the Dungeons and Dragons SRD 5.1 Ruleset, further anchoring our will to make the most faithful video game adaptation with the Tabletop Ruleset and craft the game you are hoping for!" 202.7.238.128 (talk) 07:55, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
That's just ruleset. The game does not use any of the D&D campaign settings, nor does it use "D&D" or "Dungeons and Dragons" in its title. Matt Smith (talk) 10:36, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
If requiring the use of "D&D" or "Dungeons and Dragons" in the title is a requirement for inclusion in this list, then nearly all the games need to be removed. In fact, Solata's use of the 5e rules is arguably closer to the pen and paper rules than Baldur's Gate III. A game which IS on this list, and also doesn't have "D&D" or "Dungeons and Dragons" in the title. And if using a recognizable campaign setting is a requirement, then what about all those games with a "generic" campaign setting that made the list?
And yes, the game does use some custom rules. That's true of all the games on this list, including once again Baldur's Gate III. I'd argue that BGIII has more custom rules than Solasta. If a game that uses the D&D rules isn't a D&D game, then what exactly is it? 202.7.238.128 (talk) 12:33, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
In my opinion, although using "D&D" or "Dungeons and Dragons" in the title is clearer, but that's not a must. As long as a game uses those words on its poster (example 1 and 2) or other publicity materials, it qualifies as a D&D game. Matt Smith (talk) 02:18, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Excellent. So now we've established that point, when Solasta devs write "Wizards of the Coast granted Tactical Adventures a license to use the Dungeons and Dragons SRD 5.1 Ruleset" in their publicity material, it qualifies as a D&D game. Right? 202.7.238.128 (talk) 03:04, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for not being clear. When I mentioned "D&D" or "Dungeons and Dragons" on posters and publicity materials, I meant such logos, which Solasta does not have. And from what I have learned so far, when people are talking about Solasta, most of them do not consider it a D&D game. Matt Smith (talk) 07:28, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think anyone who knows the D&D 5e ruleset will tell you Solasta is a D&D game. I'm quite surprised you think the majority say otherwise. Certainly most of the reviews on Steam and the professional reviewers call it a D&D game. Rules wise, it's probably the best video game implimentation of the 5e ruleset (given that it's limited to material in the SRD and therefore must homebrew several rules). However, it doesn't have the logo that games like Monopoly D&D have. But as I mentioned before, it would be a travesty if Monopoly D&D were turned into a video game and added to this list while Solasta was left out. Logo or not. 202.7.238.128 (talk) 14:01, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
But the developers of Solasta themselves do not advertise the game as a D&D game, do they? I think they lack the license to do that. So in an informal sense, one can regard the game as a D&D game; while in a formal occasion, the game remains as one that does not have a D&D label. Matt Smith (talk) 02:16, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, one consequence of "As long as a game uses those words on its poster" is that games will go on this list that really don't deserve to be there. Hasbro has already published at least two versions of Mononoply wtih the D&D branding, and one of Cluedo. All it would take is for them to turn those into video games, and they'd go on this list. Even though they are just a reskin and don't really use the D&D rules at all. Yes, they use the D&D brand and some images, but if you're actually looking to play a game of D&D are you going to turn to Monopoly D&D?
Ok, maybe you can't be a gatekeeper and allow those sort of games on the list because of the branding. But to also disallow games from the list that make significant use of the actual rules just because they are using the officially recognised SRD rather than buying a full licence from WotC/Hasbro seems more than a little unreasonable. 202.7.238.128 (talk) 06:17, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm not familiar with those Hasbro publications, but we can discuss. Matt Smith (talk) 07:30, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Do we have a statement of any kind from the publisher identifying it as a D&D game? BOZ (talk) 17:03, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
"Wizards of the Coast granted Tactical Adventures a license to use the Dungeons and Dragons SRD 5.1 Ruleset"
Since the SRD 5.1 is essentially the game mechanics of 5e D&D, then shouldn't "a list of video games based on the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy tabletop role-playing game" include any video games that use them? Because Solasta is only using the SRD license, it is prohibited from calling itself a "D&D game", but it's most certainly based on Dungeons and Dragons. Much more so that several officially licensed games. 202.7.238.128 (talk) 14:40, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

yeah, that would be great if I knew what I was doing. It'a pretty fucking sad is someone who came here for info and doesn't get it is told to fuck off and fix it themselves. You know if I could I probably wouldn't be looking here, would I? ::::
So you don't want to bother to find out how to fix it, and you're just expecting other people to do it for you? And you're calling other people pretty fucking sad? 2600:1700:E820:1BA0:D47A:4F19:75EE:A8CB (talk) 05:41, 24 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

'Heroes' setting edit

The game Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes has an ambiguous setting, with locations like Castle Baele and the island of Axion. It also features the character of the merchant from Dark Alliance (Forgotten Realms), mentions the gods Pelor (Greyhawk) and Moradin (Forgotten Realms & Greyhawk). My own impression is that it was meant to be FR, but ultimately they chose not to associate it with any known locale, so we can assume it's not meant to be associated. No world is mentioned or copyrighted in the manual. As such, I'm removing the unsourced mention of Greyhawk for now as it appears to be OR. 2600:8800:2382:E200:6141:C238:3728:34D2 (talk) 17:36, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

That's fair, we should not be speculating on what setting it takes place in. 8.37.179.254 (talk) 21:02, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

PLEASE SORT THIS PAGE BACK TO RELEASE DATE!!!!!! edit

I'm bagging whoever knows how to do it that they could please change this page BACK to by release date like it was before.

By setting like it is now makes absolutely no sense!!!!! And it makes my personal research %100 times more difficult.
Please and thank you very much! 2601:192:4C80:75A0:B8B4:150:4528:959A (talk) 00:56, 21 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
You would want to talk to User:Abacos about that. BOZ (talk) 02:45, 21 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Anonymous Reader. I am happy to know that you care about this page. Before I revert 16 edits done by many users over several months, may I ask about the nature of your research ? I bet I will find it interesting, too. Maybe we can find a new version that is good for everybody. Also, how come separating video games by setting makes no sense to you ? High fantasy, gothic horror, post-apocalyptic, steampunk, and so on provide different types of immersion to the players. What am I missing ? The previous version was divided into "role-playing games" and "other genres", but the definition of role-playing video game is not unanymous. What is your wish ? --Abacos (talk) 23:07, 21 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

I whole heartedly agree. Sorting by settings has made this list much harder to work with. Having to scroll down a list to find new exapnsions to old games is fine, but looking at other lists for things like NwN: Dark Dreams of Furiae, is worse. (It's Planescape while the rest of the NWN content is Forgotten Realms.)

'RPG' and 'Other' weren't great headings, but I think the point was more 'true-to-rules' type games, eg: Pool of Radiance, BG, NWN. VS everything else, eg: Hillsfar, Shadow over Mystara.

The chronogical list had practical uses, sorting by setting really doesn't. It wasn't hard to quickly pick out the handful of Darksun games if that's what you were after. Referencing multiple lists if you want to play them in order is harder.

Like the topic creator, I also used to use this page for research (I work on a licensed D&D product) and was dismayed when I discovered the list like this. BasicKobold (talk) 21:34, 4 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Maybe an RFC to determine whether people generally think it is better like it was or like it is? 207.229.139.154 (talk) 01:02, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Chronological table edit

We could create a second wikipage, titled "Chronological list of D&D video games", and put the following three tables in it. --Abacos (talk) 12:27, 26 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Maybe, but it seems like it may be redundant to have two pages listing essentially the same thing. 8.37.179.254 (talk) 21:19, 26 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
