Production credits & formatting

edit

At present, do we have sources that say Lee produced every single SM Entertainment artist? Does he have actual production credits for at least one song or album by each of them? (I'm guessing this is 'yes,' but...) If not, all we're doing on this page is creating a list of SM Entertainment artists, which is already done at SM Entertainment, and we could be misleading people. Also, if he does indeed produce every single SM artist, then it might not really necessary to list them all out. A point toward the SM article could suffice. I suggest we not add anyone else to the list on this page until we have confirmation Lee actually produced for them, but that's just a suggestion. Other artist-specific articles DO use this one as a source that Lee has produced their artist/album/song, though - just something to consider.

Also, has Lee ever produced any non-SM artists? Perhaps from before SM Entertainment was founded, or maybe he did some producing of his own stuff during his singing days? I have no idea but it's worth looking into. :)

Secondly, it's not necessary or accurate to put solo artists with their former or future groups within the list. Example - Lee produced Dana as Dana, a solo artist. He also produced The Grace, as a group. Putting Dana's name indented under The Grace's is unnecessary, because his production of one was done independently of production of the other - the two projects weren't related. Additionally, and more importantly, it's actually unintentionally confusing. It might make the reader think...why is only one member of The Grace listed as a production credit? What's that mean? He's only involved with Dana and not the other members? or something of that nature. If someone wants to know more about Dana, they'll follow the wikilink to her article, and there they'll learn that she is now a member of the Grace. If they don't click, then they don't care, and it in no way diminishes their understanding of Lee Soo-man. This page shouldn't become a repository for information on various SM artists, it's an article about Lee himself. So try to avoid the temptation to add more detail just because the detail exists (I fall prey to the same temptation often!). Make it relevant and necessary to the understandability of the article at hand. :)

Also, this article needs some expansion like whoa. Anyone have any sources besides the Time article in the external links? I mean, his notability in Korea is through the roof. Come on, let's give Lee some love. --hamu♥hamu (talk) 13:12, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Someone help please; this is urgent

edit

Someone please read this and fast. I need help. I found a disturbing video on Youtube about Lee Soo Man's mistreatment of TVXQ & other groups and singers that work under SM Entertainment, and that BoA is a witch, and that he threatned and beat the crap out of the members of TVXQ and threatened to split them up and that he nearly killed them a few times. Here's the link. http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=gHQwxu4emZc

I want someone to tell me if any of it is true or not. BUT! I really REALLY hope that NONE of this is true. I don't want BoA to be a witch or DBSK getting the crap beaten out of them or threats being made to them or LSM nearly killing them to be true or even happen EVER. Someone please help me get proof of this. I really hope that these are rumours and lies. Look at the description box and read all the stuff on the video before replying please. Again, I really need your help, everyone. Thanks.

UPDATE: The person who made the vid gave me a link on where she got the info: http://asianfanatics.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t298666.html

Please read and tell me what you guys think. Thanks.

I'm not sure if it's true. There have always been rumours regarding LSM/SM Entertainment and their treatment of artists, but none of the allegations have been proven. I wouldn't really believe a YouTube video, though. (I'm not sure how exactly this is relevant to the page, but if you're thinking about including it on the page, it wouldn't be allowable unless you had a legitimate source.) SKS2K6 (talk) 16:20, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I understand. I'm not adding it to the page.

Thanks for the info. :D

Lee Soo-manSoo-man Lee – Korean names are usually <family name> <given name(s)> but on most (if not all) of the musical releases he's on, he's credited as Soo-man Lee, not Lee Soo-man. It seems he prefers this name order.   Relisted Armbrust The Homunculus 08:39, 1 January 2014 (UTC) Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 15:53, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Please, do elaborate on how the liner notes booklet included with the actual physical album is not reliable. Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 12:02, 24 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Please read WP:RS. In ictu oculi (talk) 02:25, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Your point being what exactly? Liner notes are commonly used in the "credits" or "personnel" sections of albums. Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 08:10, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
The point is that the liner notes are by the artist or himself someone closely connected. In ictu oculi (talk) 16:16, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
In this case, the liner notes are by the label. He serves as the executive producer, he obviously has some influence over how his name appears in these publishings. A primary source is perfectly acceptable to use (as long as there's no additional interpretation, etc.) Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 17:01, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Re: "Unless the subject is known to prefer otherwise..."--doesn't his name being listed as Soo-man Lee on several albums' liner notes where he serves as the executive producer justify that? Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 14:44, 5 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
In a perfect world, yes. However, the case in areas where the Latin alphabet is not native is that you can get multiple "official" spellings of many subjects' names. The fact is that these "names" are often more for decorative purposes than a serious assertion of identity in the Latin alphabet. (Think of ВОRДТ in English). This is why, as is prescribed by Wikipedia policy in WP:SECONDARY, we should place an emphasis on secondary sources.  AjaxSmack  18:51, 5 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Actually, more than half of the subjects in the liner notes are written in hangul. For example, on a certain album's liner notes it says:
  • Executive producer: S.M. Entertainment
  • Producer: Soo-man Lee
  • Chief director of production & management: <hangul>
  • A&R Direction: <hangul>
  • Mastered by: <hangul> at Sonic Korea
  • English supervised by: John H. Lee
  • Choreography: Lisette Bustamante, Beat Burger (<hangul>)
  • Executive supervisor: Young-min Kim

Lee Soo-Man Updates Requested by Company

edit

Hello, I am an employee under SM Entertainment and I have been asked by the company to update Lee Soo-Man's page with the following edits/updates. They were provided directly by the company and I need them to be approved so they can be added immediately, thank you.

INTRODUCTION

Lee Soo-man (born 18 June 1952) is a South Korean record producer and best known as the founder of SM Entertainment, a multinational entertainment company based in Seoul, South Korea.[1] He has also been referred to as the "president of culture", as he pioneered the Korean Wave.[2] Lee has received an Order of Cultural Merit[3], the highest honor from the Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards, along with the Asia Game-Changer Award by New York’s Asia Society for having steered the music industry’s development and growth into the massive, multi-billion dollar juggernaut it is today.[4]

Lee was born during the Korean War in 1952 and debuted as a folk singer in 1971 while he was a student at Seoul National University.[5] In the early ‘80s, he went on to study computer engineering in Los Angeles and later that decade, he founded SM Entertainment in 1989, which became one of the largest record labels and management companies in South Korea.[6]

Lee has achieved record-breaking success after success via SM's signature “Culture Technology,” a widely studied and emulated system of innovation in cultural production and global export.[7] Combined with Lee’s artistic sensibilities and hands-on experience as a producer, Culture Technology has powered everything from H.O.T.’s industry-defining smashes of the late ‘90s to SuperM’s instant rise to #1 on the Billboard Top 200 within.[8][9]

You still need to properly source all this information. It is mostly a resume and full of promotional content and fluff. It isn't acceptable for an encylopedia. Evaders99 (talk) 05:33, 20 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
