Lede edit

I agree that the lede that was replaced on August 22 by TremorMilo was awkward. Unfortuanlty there are also some issues with the replacement. First, the appropriate word here is gay, as we use the term homosexual only in quotations and in clinical contexts. Second, the new lede implies that the four men intended to attack (as well as rob) Sandy because he was gay, when they actually targeted him because they believed it was easier to rob gay men. The attack was essentially collateral since the robbery was primary, according to the newspaper reports. Neither version is good, although the new version has more serious issues than the previous one. Therefore I'm reverting until we can come up with a better version. Suggestions? — Becksguy (talk) 09:08, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I removed "attack" from the lede per my comment above. — Becksguy (talk) 09:50, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have no problem using "gay" instead of "homosexual", although personally I find "gay" less encyclopedic. My real issue was that I think the initial phrase should describe him simply as a man, rather than a gay man. It just feels funny to me. I'm going to make an edit which I think will be a good compromise. TremorMilo (talk) 20:39, 26 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

African-American edit

I can understand Michael Sandy being described as an American Man, but why is he not described as an African-American man, while further down Michael Griffth who also died in a hate crime is described as an African-American. I both should be described as American men or African-American men, their racial descriptions should not be separated based on the crimes that were committed against them. I understand Sandy was targeted for being Gay and Griffth was targeted for being Black, but they are still being separated by categories, even though they are both African-Americans. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.87.248.18 (talk) 18:07, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

There was a change in describing Sandy as African-American in January 2008 without an edit summary nor any discussion here. I agree that they should be the same and therefore I am changing it back to African-American. Thanks for noticing that. — Becksguy (talk) 00:01, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 24 August 2023 edit

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved to Killing of Michael Sandy, which was identified as preferable in the discussion (see WP:DEATHS, which was not mentioned by name but which undergirded the rationale). Michael SandyMurder of Michael Sandy – The article appears to be solely about the murder and not the life of the individual prior to that event. Inexpiable (talk) 06:55, 24 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • Support Killing of Michael Sandy. Nobody was convicted of murder, only manslaughter. We don't use "murder" unless there was a murder conviction. The only exception is if it was an obvious murder but nobody was ever convicted. But if those responsible were caught but only convicted of lesser offences then we don't use the term. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:26, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
