When was this National Park Established? The first reading says "Established on 1936 BCE as Hulalala National Park" while the info box says it was established on 1921. So when was it actually established? Nissim 14 (talk) 04:34, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

The article currently needs a good image of a Bengal tiger within Corbett and a good picture of Jim Corbett himself (the current one is no good at all). I have found another book which may be used for some expansion and should be able to use it soon. Thanks everyone for your edits; please stay with the article to improve it further.

Right now, when we have a number of responsible and well respected editors looking after the article, may be the best time for compiling a list on what more needs to be done to promote the article to GA. What is "biological schemes" in the second sentence? Googling that phrase showed uses that don't correspond to the use here. Is there a better word/phrase?

In the Fauna section it mentions Leopards, but it's referring, and links to the Leopard Cat. Should it just be Leopard Cat in the text? The way it reads now it makes one think of the much larger Leopard. But, I don't know the proper term, just know that I was expecting Leopard. ॐ Priyanath talk 23:27, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

In the resplendent Terai belt at the foothills of the western Himalayas, with habitat ranging from riverbank forest to mountaintop, climate from cool to torrid monsoons, are ecological niches for a huge array of flora and fauna and the creatures to fill them-India's oldest national park and one of its finest.

Top among these in the biological schemes as well as worldwide interest is the beautiful and endangered Bengal tiger. Corbett was named after the famous hunter-naturalist who became a leader in the fight to save tigers from extinction. Project Tiger, an Indian initiative with worldwide support to protect tigers from the many threats to their survival and to set aside habitat for them, was started here by Indian conservationists working with the World Wild Fund for nature.

I picked up "biological schemes" from there but now its beginning to sound like something related to biological experiments to me as well.

How does "Situated in Nainital district of Uttarakhand, the park acts as a protected area for the critically endangered Bengal tiger of India, the secure survival of which is the main objective of Project Tiger, an Indian wildlife protection initiative" sound ?

Project Tiger definitely sounds like it deserves to be in the lede section.

As for the Felis bengalensis link, I'll correct it since both the main sources of the article refer to the big cat here.

Looks very good on both counts.

Regarding images - are any of the old editions of Corbett's books in the Public Domain? I could scan and upload a better photo of Corbett for the article if so. And has anyone emailed the National Park for photos they would like to share? It would be in their best interest to help promote the park. I can check for old editions of Corbett's books but have no past experience in emailing organizations for assistance. If you could e-mail them and ask for some pictures of tigers in the reserve, Jim Corbett himself (while browsing Flickr I came across a bust of him in the reserve which will do admirably), a picture for the "ecotourism" section or some proper pictures of rivers and streams etc. then it would solve the most immediate of this article's weaknesses.

Allow me to present the following points:

1. I asked one of my friends to read the article and provide me with some feedback; he did not have Adobe Reader and that's what gave me the idea to provide a link for users who don't have it. I think if one is looking for free info on the web and settling for WP as an cost-effective alternative to EB then its our duty to try and make this article as verifiable and as easy on the new user as possible. Many new users hardly read, and hardly use Adobe but they still might want to read Drayton, F. (2004). Terai Arc Landscape in India. World Wide Fund for Nature.

2. One of the URLs has a .com extension attached to it ( http://www.kolkatabirds.com/corbett.htm ) which would imply that it may be a commercial entity. Being a bibliophile I do not recommend using "kolkatabirds" to build any section of any encyclopedia, especially when a wealth of great sources is already provided for the section. Even if good articles were not available for the "External links" section it would have been better to leave it empty then to use http://www.kolkatabirds.com/corbett.htm .

3. {{Template:National Parks of India}} is cumbersome, badly written and has errors in it. It does not belong in an article of such importance unless corrected first, which ought to take some effort. The placing of an additional template further repeats the links already covered by the other template in the article.

I appreciate your contributions to this article, and other protected areas related articles in general, but in light of the above mentioned reasons I request you to please restore the article to its old form, or allow me to. The article in its current state will fail any quality assessment test for the most trivial of reasons.

Pls. do remove the Image:Parthenium argentatum (USDA).jpg picture it is not taken in the park. Only images related to the park may be added in the article. One more suggestion is as the climate section is very short we can merge with Geography section. Add a section about the mention of the park in popular cultures. Here is a website though may not be much reliable, but we can use to get the basic data and then replace the link if we get something better.[1] Amartyabag ^TALK2ME 01:21, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

I hope to complete the following tasks shortly:

1. Find more suitable images for the article; I have sent a few messages and hopefully things will materialize soon. We have good enough images as is though but better images always do a good job of engaging people who just type "Jim Corbett National Park" in a search engine and reach here.

2. Thank you for pointing out WP:UNITS to me. I failed to notice that aspect completely and will implement it soon.

3. I can add a few of Corbett's books but does it require an entire section ? There was a mention of a movie which I presume was filmed in the park but even that may not justify an entire section. We need at least 5 mentions to have a section like this in my opinion. I'll look around though and will use available resources to try and find out more about the park in popular culture.

I disagree on the following issues:

1. We don't need WP:PR for this article as we already have 4-5 editors looking over it. At this point WP:PR would be a pointless as most of the work is done and the article looks good as it is but can always be improved by our efforts. We're sufficient in number and are good enough for the job.

2. Wikipedia:Harvard referencing is better but not essential. I personally have no opinion or objections to it but don't see the need to implement it immediately. We have a solid, verifiable system already in place here.

3. The climate section is very short but we only have summer temperatures, winter temperatures and rainfall etc. to mention here. The original EB article does not even do that but assumes that the reader will see Terai climate for himself. What do you think about adding the following to the climate section in order to expand it:

"Tiwari & Joshi (1997) consider summer (April-June) to be the best season for Indian tourists to visit the park while recommending the winter months (November-January) for foreign tourists.[18] According to Riley & Riley (2005): "Best chances of seeing a tiger to come late in the dry season- April to mid June-and go out with mahouts and elephants for several days."[5]"

I think this is already mentioned in the Ecotourism section. We can easily merge the climate section with Geography. Amartyabag ^TALK2ME 03:30, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Template:National Parks of India has the following issues:

• Cumbersome layout.
• Two links to National parks of India.
• Untidy parenthesis system.
• Links to Protected Areas and National Parks for no apparent reason. The template has to be placed at the bottom of the page related to a "protected area" or a "national park" article and these links are already covered in the lede or opening paras above.
• Plenty of links to badly written articles. It's better to link up a reader with country specific directory style page and let him navigate from there then to link him up with 40 articles out of which only a few make for an informative read.

Is this source actually used as a reference in the footnotes? (I could not find it.) If not, then according to the Wikipedia:Harvard referencing it should be removed.

Finishing Touches

1. We have better images, namely Image:Crossing the Ram Ganga.jpg and Image:Sambar Deer in Jim Corbet National Park.jpg, to implement in the "ecotourism" section and other sections. Thanks to one Mr. Peter Davis !

2. WP:UNITS: No results turned up for mile. Since I don't see a mile/km conflict kindly point out where are we violating the rule as I have not been able to detect it.

3. I'm neutral regarding the use of any template (Template:Protected areas of India or Template:WildlifeofIndia). Any template can be implemented by any editor.

That's about it. The article's looks good and if a WP:UNITS flaw is detected then please let me know so I can fix it.

That's all right but I couldn't find any mention of foot or mile in the article. Could you please point out to me the exact areas where we are violating this rule ? It looks pretty good to me but then I've only taken a glance and can do with the specifics of where exactly is a violation that needs to be corrected.

The above given comment was just an example, u can convert ft into miles/km and vice versa and to each other within a category of measurement, ie. length, area, speed. I think that it does an adequate job of linking a reader to various directory style pages where he/she can read about the otherwise left out protected areas at leisure. It's about time Indian protected areas had their own exclusive template linking users to well laid out pages. Good article nomination on hold

This article's Good Article promotion has been put on hold. During review, some issues were discovered that can be resolved without a major re-write. This is how the article, as of November 14, 2007, compares against the six good article criteria:

1. Well written?: Prose is readable, and mostly complies with the Manual of Style. National parks are not one of the titles to be italicized (or placed in quotes) per MOS:T, so that needs to be remedied unless there is some applicable guideline or precedent that contradicts this. As as side note, I created the Ramganga National Park article as a redirect to this one. Some of prose reads a little awkwardly in terms of flow and order. The introduction's second sentence is a bit odd, since shouldn't the etymology be a priority over the bit about Project Tiger and such (even if the project was an integral part of the formation and development)? I'll try and tweak that myself. In Fauna, again the section goes right into speaking on tigers immediately. Shouldn't the complete overview of the fauna - such as the facts in the end of the section - come before detailed mentions of particular species (however spectacular)? In the second sentence of the second paragraph of History, it says that "even disturbing" the mammals is prohibited. Is that the literal language used? Because outlawing the harassment of animals in parks is not unusual to my knowledge. Next, in History it says "permits timber cutting"; I assume you mean the local harvesting of wood for home fuel that goes on in much of rural India. If this is so, then distinguishing this from the type of commercial clear-cut logging that comes in to Western minds when we think of national parks and timber cutting is a good idea. One last issue, and probably the biggest, is that quite a bit of the content of Challenges seems to be historical in nature. Perhaps some of it should be moved there, and the section renamed Current challenges. What do you think?

2. Factually accurate?: Referencing and citations are great, nice work!

3. Broad in coverage?: Covers all major aspects concisely.

4. Neutral point of view?: Fair representation of all significant views.

5. Article stability? No instability here.

6. Images?: Accounted for with proper licensing tags where present, a few are quite gorgeous btw. Good choices and placement.

Please address these matters soon and then leave a note here showing how they have been resolved. After 48 hours the article should be reviewed again. Addressing concerns

Many of the earlier mentioned issues have already been taken care of as is shown in these diffs. I've tried to address the remaining issues.

• When I thought of Fauna the first thing to enter my mind was admittedly the magnificent tiger. The overview regarding the species found in the park has been put in the lede now.

• According to Rangarajan, M. (2006) "It was an offence to kill or capture 'any mammal, reptile or bird' or even to disturb them within the 180 square mile park." but then the same rules (for disturbing an animal) can be found elsewhere as well so I'll remove it (the "disturbing an animal" part).

• The cutting of trees done in Corbett is usually for fuel with some cases of felling for local furniture etc. Mostly simple domestic use instead of a regulated large scale commercial logging.

• I divided the Challenges sections into past and present.

History section

I've edited the History section to eliminate some confusion I had between the original "reserve" (1907) and the park (1936). I rearranged things to eliminate duplication and put them in chronological order. My intent was to do so without eliminating any information or changing the meaning of anything. If I have failed in this, please dodn't hesitate to make corrections.

Still confusing, I think, is the relation of the three main entities (tiger reserve, national park, and wildlife sanctuary). Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve is a redirect to this article, and I will be making the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary the same shortly. As far as I have been able to tell, Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve = Jim Corbett National Park + Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary + some other forest buffer lands, but this is still not quite clear to me when reading the article. A couple of IPs have been changing the official site back to corbettnationalpark.in. I believe that this was once the official site, but it is quite clearly now owned by a tour operator. Corbett park was first renamed Ramganga National Park.
