Purpose of this article
editThe article has been renamed in response to a merger proposal which resulted in agreement to merge all English cricket season reviews, for 1726 to 1863, into relevant histories. There was already History of cricket (1726–1771) and this one for 1816–1863, but no article for any part of 1772–1815. History of cricket (1772–1815) has been created for the missing period and this one was moved to comply with the series naming convention.
The priority for development of this history is to complete the merger into it of the most significant and useful content in the 1816 to 1863 season reviews, but there is no rush to complete this as mergers can take years (see WP:MERGE). Presumably, the chronology should be delisted and converted into a narrative but that can be done gradually, although it would be good to have citations in there. If anyone else has useful sources and can help to expand the article, it will be much appreciated. I will work on it occasionally. Thanks. No Great Shaker (talk) 07:42, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- Good luck with this! I've just read through it for the first time. There are currently some amazingly POV asides in there! JH (talk page) 07:09, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
- The problem is that it was completely unsourced before I moved the 1863 content yesterday and even these two sources only address the matches played that year. The CricketArchive site is paywalled so I hope its list is the same as the one on the other site, though I could look at ESPN for a list. I certainly get the impression that there is OR and POV – the fashion section, speculation about the fire at Lord's, and some of the comments about bowling styles all look dubious to me. If you recognise any blatant OR, please feel to remove it. I'll persevere as and when. I've drawn up a list of sample tags and summaries that I need to use for each merge and that's half the battle because the rest is just editing what's there (and adding cn tags!). Thanks again and all the best. No Great Shaker (talk) 08:48, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if I'll have time to do any editing. But I do have a CricketArchive subscription, so if there's anything you would like checked there I'd be happy to do it. IIRC, the founders of CA were originally heavily involved with Cricinfo before leaving to set up their own site, so hopefully the sites will agree regarding their lists of matches.
