Pronoun

It's wikipedia policy to use the gender that the person decided upon as the pronoun throughout, not alternate them.98.235.19.177 (talk) 05:06, 26 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

This is true; however, another wikipedia policy directly contradicts this. According to MOS:IDENTITY, the term used for a person will be the one used by the person themself. In Herculine Barbin's own writings, both masculine and feminine words, verbs, and pronouns are used to refer to her/himself. Ashley Suk (talk) 18:08, 27 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
: Perhaps it would then make the most sense either to follow Barbarin's own style (she prior to reassignment and he afterwards) or use "he" throughout, giving precedence to the later self-identification. "She" throughout seems suboptimal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vdzk (talkcontribs) 20:53, 4 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Given that a court insisted she was male, and she later committed suicide, reassignment as male seems non optional, and unlikely to be a matter of self-identification. Trankuility (talk) 22:19, 4 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Names vs pronouns

edit

The description of which pronouns Barbin used got mangled in https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Herculine_Barbin&oldid=763284872 , by the addition of the text ", including Alexina and Camille,". These are names, not pronouns. They also were inserted just after "male pronouns", which is even more confusing, since Alexina appears to be a feminine name, and Camille typically feminine (and for all I know, may only have been feminine in France at that time). I suggest that this insertion be simply removed, or rewritten by someone familiar with the memoirs as a separate sentence to provide evidence that she used these names at a particular stage in her memoirs to indicate a particular gender identity.
