Removed image edit

I've removed Image:Hawthorne at Night.jpg from the article. I believe the photo actually depicts Portland, Oregon and assume that "Hawthorne" in this case refers to the Hawthorne area of Portland. In any case, does Hawthorne, CA actually have a vertical lift bridge (or even a navigable waterway) as shown? -- Gyrofrog (talk) 00:52, 11 May

No, Hawthorne is a few miles away from the beach and the nearest bridge would be the San Pedro Porting bridge.

is it true Hawthorne has over 10,000 American Muslims? please help me find the link for demographic sources to back it up. The city's location to LAX, the US' busiest immigration port of entry explains the racial/ethnic diverse population: Latinos, Asians, Blacks (African or US born), Whites (European or middle-eastern), American Indians, Polynesians, etc. in one community. 207.200.116.196 06:32, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Restructure edit

Let's get rid of those lists and actually come up with an encyclopedic article describing Hawthorne. We need a History section for sure. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 17:58, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, nobody did anything about it, so I removed the Pop Culture list, which had no sources and was of marginal Notability at best. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 07:56, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Army Ammunition Plant? edit

I came across Hawthorne whilst casually browsing OpenStreetMap. "Crazy road layout" I thought. Looking at Yahoo! aerial imagery (in the OSM editor) I couldn't make out what these roads in the desert were all about. Loads of them taking up vast tracts of land around the city of Hawthorne. I thought it might be a huge wind farm, but a search of flickr geolocated photos turned up this one which seem to suggest it's an "Army Ammunition Plant". No close-up photos though. No mention of "army"/"military" in this article either. What is this secret conspiracy I've uncovered?? -- Harry Wood (talk) 13:23, 7 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

The photographer turned up this link: http://ludb.clui.org/ex/i/NV3168/ Lots of information, at least some of which should be mentioned on this Hawthorne, California article. I'll add a sentence on there somewhere -- Harry Wood (talk) 10:01, 15 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hawthorne Army Ammunition Depot is in Hawthorne, Nevada and should be removed from Hawthorne, California —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.8.106.74 (talk) 02:22, 7 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Aha! Mystery solved!
So... there's two different cities called Hawthorne: Hawthorne, Nevada and Hawthorne, California, and they're actually relatively close to each other. Doesn't that cause postal chaos??
Anyway yes... This explains why the details were missing. I had the wrong Hawthorne. There's even an article dedicated to Hawthorne Army Depot. Of course there is. Wikipedia knows all!

sundown town ref... but nothing in article? edit

There's a link to this article from Sundown town:

  • In some cases, signs were placed at the town's borders with statements similar to the one posted in Hawthorne, California which read "Nigger, Don't Let The Sun Set On YOU In Hawthorne" in the 1930s.[1]
  1. ^ Laura Wexler, Darkness on the Edge of Town, The Washington Post, October 23, 2005, p. BW03. A review of Loewen's book. Accessed online 9 July 2006.

Probably should mention something about that in this article directly. DMahalko (talk) 05:14, 27 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Northrop Corporation edit

Wasn't the Northrop Corporation located in Hawthorne, CA at one time? And didn't Northrop also have a major aircraft manufacturing facility there also? It would improve the article if there were some mention of this. I hope the lack of mention isn't a case of civic censorship by residents. Don't laugh, it's been know to happen, usually about some negative news item.--TGC55 (talk) 16:28, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
