Talk:French American International School (San Francisco)

Latest comment: 3 years ago by Virtualjmills

Historical: FAIS (initially FABS, then FAIS, and then FAIS + CAIS) used to operate out of a different facility (officially 220 Buchanan St.) through circa 2002/2003 on South-East corner of Buchanan St. and Haight St. extending south to Waller St. and approximately one-half block east down Haight St., a small portion of which remains as the building at 229 Haight St., San Francisco CA.

Historical: Very early 1980s, school was renamed from "FABS" (French-American Bilingual School) to "FAIS" (French-American International School).

Historical: Very early 1980s, "CAIS" (Chinese-American International School) was founded at the same facility, in the "Lower Annex" facing south into the parking lot near Waller St. intersection of Buchanan St. per above. This part of the school facility no longer exists.

Some deeper "Laguna Campus" / UC Extension site backstory can be found here, though I have no relation to its content: https://district5diary.blogspot.com/2005/06/warren-and-darlene-dewar-project-is.html

QUOTE: "Most of the ((Laguna Campus)) property was used by the University of California as an extension campus from 1958 until 2002. In 1973, the Regents leased the upper half of the campus to the French-American Bilingual School. The bilingual school vacated the property in 2003. The property has been vacant since that year, with the exception of the south-west corner, which is used by UCSF as its dental clinic."

In the last decade-or-so (2010 .. 2020) much of the "Upper Half" of the UC Extension campus described was leveled and developed into apartment buildings, though I don't know if it was the same development proposal discussed in the URL above, or not.

Earlier history I wasn't even aware-of until just now: FABS initially (1958-1978) operated out of a Queen Anne / period-revival property called the "Probert House" at 940 Grove St., San Francisco CA (very near the visually famous "Alamo Square Park" painted ladies), with some level of facility occupancy overlap during the 1973 .. 1978 time period. One amendment: My Wiki-fu isn't solid enough to add the above information to the page itself, hence use of Talk: instead.
