First, the area was not "once occupied" by the Maidu. Many people who identify as Maidu still live in the area. Second, a metate is a flat stone tool used to grind food items. The holes on boulders and rock outcrops are usually referred to as "bedrock mortars" to distinguish them from metates. 70.16.141.116 (talk) 15:38, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
