Sierra Leone Government Railway

Here is a coincidence. Everard Calthrop, a strong advocate of of narrow gauge railways, particularly of 2' 6" gauge, opened a railway consultancy in Liverpool in 1892, and later advocates a narrow gauge railway connecting Liverpool and Manchester in a competition run by the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce. In 1893 the LCC promotes the construction of the Sierra Leone Government Railway, which was subsequently built in 2' 6" gauge. Indian narrow gauge(s)

If 762 became the standard narrow gauge in India, how come are there also 610 lines as well?

Most 2' gauge lines were built before this became policy. Those that were built after were private concerns with no government support. --Michael Johnson (talk) 02:09, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

But why not use the 610 used on the Festiniog built in 1836 and steam hauled from 1863? 762 is "only" 25% wider than 610. Why introduce yet another gauge? Tabletop (talk) 14:30, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

But of course the Festiniog Railway was not 2' gauge, it was 1'11.5" gauge. There were over 20 different narrow gauges used in the United Kingdom, so we can't talk about introducing a "new" gauge. The first 2'6" gauge railway in the UK was the Pentewan of 1874. The first 2'6" gauge railway in India was the Gaekwar's Baroda State Railway of 1862. It obtained its first steam locomotive in 1863 however the rails were not strengthened enough to allow full steam operation till 1873. Calthrop approached the gauge issue in a very scientific way. He argued that using a track gauge of 2 ft 6 in gave the greatest capacity as a percentage of capital cost, thus making it the most suitable gauge for feeder railways in regions that could not justify the cost of a mainline railway. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.228.82.52 (talk) 07:38, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Many authors deem Festiniog to use 610 even though it is strictly speaking 597; it is a very small difference.

1) Cite added for 100 foot radius requested by 165.228.82.52.

2) It would have been more friendly to have comment out challenged text(s), particularly if there are more than one. It makes more work and less accuracy when challanged text is unchallanged.

3) Wiki does not seem to allow for cited text to cite a line number in that texts, so you will need to wade through it to confirm the cite.
