Major Edits edit

I plan to make some major edits to this article in a few days. I restructured the article to include several more in depth sections including Elmina before the arrival of the Portuguese, the Portuguese arrival, and the Building of the Castle. These were the major areas of my research. I also added sections on the Atlantic Slave Trade and the involvement of other European nations, but these sections will still need to be expanded upon. I will watch this discussion board for any objections. Akuajennifer 22:56, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

End of Dutch slave trade edit

It is only a minor point in the context of this article, but the Dutch slave trade from Elmina was already formally abolished in 1814. In that year Great Britain restored the Dutch colonies it had captured during the Napoleonic wars to the newly-independent Kingdom of the Netherlands by the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814. One of the provisions of the treaty was that involvement in the slave trade would henceforth be prohibited to Dutch citizens and such a prohibition was duly enacted in Dutch criminal law that year. Later treaties enacted joint Anglo-Dutch prize courts to adjudicate the capture of illegal slavers by the navies of both countries. Like in Great Britain slavery itself was not abolished until much later in Dutch colonies (1859 in Indonesia; 1863 in the West Indies). As the Dutch "Gold Coast" became economically worthless to the Dutch after 1814, they were happy to sell the area to the British in 1871 for monetary compensation (Elmina itself brought NLG 47,000) and a free hand on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. I have made the necessary edits.--Ereunetes (talk) 19:35, 20 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
