Changes

edit

I made some minor changes. I changed this: "A graduate of Mesa Westwood High School in Mesa, Arizona, White had a stellar career as a quarterback and punter at Arizona State University and subsequently appeared briefly in the World Football League before catching on with the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys." To this: "A graduate of Mesa Westwood High School in Mesa, Arizona, White had a stellar career as a quarterback and punter at Arizona State University and subsequently appeared briefly in the World Football League before being signed by the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys. " I also added a link to the article on Steve Pelluer. --Tomzc 18:41, 9 November 2007 (UTC)TomzcReply

- I find it hard to believe that the Dallas Cowboys were favored in the NFC Championship Games from 1980 - 1982.

- First off, the Cowboys were on the road for all 3 games. The away team is almost never the favorite in that situation.

- Also, in 1981 the Cowboys played the 49ers during the regular season before the NFC Championship Game. They got killed by the 49ers 45 -14. I doubt Dallas would have been a favorite in the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers weeks later. ___

- White didn't play defense. To blame him for the three losses, ESPECIALLY in 1981, is complete bunk. The defense gave up the winning touchdown, NOT Danny White. That being said he was within a few inches of winning the game. Had Drew Pearson not been caught by the width of a hair on a tackle (after catching a slant from White) history would be far different. White never got the credit he deserved. ___

I agree. Also, White's "fumble" that sealed the game for the 49ers was not a fumble at all. It was an incomplete forward pass. Today's instant replay system would have overturned that call.

- I pretty much agree with that opinion. It's unfortunate, though, that in the article, you choose to represent your (and my) opinion as though it were a fact. Mwelch 03:38, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

___

- Most experts agree that he was unfairly criticized for the losses, and criticism of White was not "wide." If "unfairly" is inappropriate so, too, is "widely". He was criticized by a vocal minority (see the 17-year old idiot motorist) but most fans know it was not his fault. The term "widely" without mitigation shows you sanction it in the article.

___

- I tried to insert ("and, in the opinion of many, unfairly") to bring the criticism of Danny White into proper perspective and that doesn't meet your approval either. That section of the article sounds like a hit piece. What gives?

___

Actually, I wouldn't defend the term "widely". Just didn't notice it, that's all. So if you have a problem with it, then why not take that word out rather than intentionally violate policy? Mwelch 07:09, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

___

- My violation was no more intentional than yours. I'm glad we got it toned down a little. It reads better. I still say he got a majorly unfair shake on that deal. Far and away one of the top QBs in Dallas history (Staubach, Aikman, Meredith, and White).

Punting Statistics

edit

Someone really should add his punting numbers to the statistical table, as this gives a better picture of his dual contribution to the team. He was usually amongst the better punters in the league, and this saved a roster spot for the team (he was designated the backup placekicker as well). He was also always a threat to run or pass from punt formation. WHPratt (talk) 15:22, 22 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Someone added these. Very nice! WHPratt (talk) 14:04, 16 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

49ers ran out the clock in the final seconds

edit

Concerning the 1981 NFC Championship game, I took out the portion that said "White almost brought the Cowboys back to win the game, but his pass to Drew Pearson came a finger tackle away from winning the game in the final seconds." Per the referees' call, White fumbled the ball within the last minute (and the 49ers recovered) but well before the "final seconds." The final seconds were run out by the 49ers offense downing the ball.John ISEM (talk) 22:58, 7 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
