History section

The North Eastern Railway didn't exist until 1854 so, if the station really opened in 1829, it was by one of the very early railway companies. MegaPedant (talk) 17:48, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Butt (pp. 71,72) says Great North of England Railway, which was a NER constituent. I've changed "Station opened as Croft (NE)" to "Station opened as Croft", because Butt shows it as "CROFT NE" also "Croft [NE]" - he uses railway company initials as disambiguators, often placing them in square brackets, so it's clear that the original name was simply "Croft". --Redrose64 (talk) 16:05, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Opened 1829?

I notice the recent addition of Category:Railway stations opened in 1829. Looking at Butt (1995), pp. 71-72, it's clear that there were two stations on different routes:

• on the Stockton & Darlington (which was the east-west route through Darlington North Road), a station named Croft opened 27 October 1829 and closed 30 march 1841.
• on the Great North of England (which was the north-south route through Darlington Bank Top), a station also named Croft opened 30 March 1841, and was renamed Croft Spa 1 October 1896; it closed 3 March 1969.

Which of the two stations is this article intended to cover? With the name "Croft Spa", I don't think that it should cover the S&D station, which never bore that name. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:05, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

I'd suggest that it's probably worth covering both, provided that they're clearly distinguished. The reason for the change was just to clarify that the station, as currently described, certainly didn't open as a passenger station a year before Liverpool Road. I did add that category since it appears that a station was opened at that time. In this case, from your comment above, it suggests that the best alternative might be to create a redirect from Croft railway station to the history section here. Move the category to that redirect and add one for the closing Category:Railway stations closed in 1841. This would clarify what the categories are for. Don't know if {{R with possibilities}} should be used on that redirect since I know nothing about the notability of that station or how much material would be available.
