"Born in 1980, Medders" you already said in the opening sentence he was born in 1980.
" to draft him" is there a link?

"2002 was the... " avoid starting sentences with a numeral.

"call up a fresh arm to help a tired bullpen" hey, I'm certainly no expert but this reads rather whimsical and not particularly encyclopedic in tone.
