Talk:BYOB

In the regional variations section, it is mentioned the 'corkage' and its wiki link is a redirection to the BYOB itself.

I would suggest that if BYOB is the redirection of corckage, the term corkage should be added in the intro. Or even better, create subsections inside regional variations for each different expansions and synonyms of BOYB and then link to its own page or expand the term here and redirect the other main pages not to the main BYOB page but to its subsection inside BYOB.

This doesn't belong on wikipedia

edit

This article is really just the definition and attempted etymology of a word, which belongs on wiktionary, not here. It has been transwikied to wiktionary already, by the way. Unfortunately, our article seems more complete than what wiktionary has added to their main definition, so I'm leaving this article in place for now. Ultimately it probably shouldn't stay, in the long run, unless this somehow can become a full article. --Xyzzyplugh 15:43, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

{{Prod}} it and leave a note asking the admin to transwiki it first. 151.202.74.135 23:11, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

1800s??

edit

I don't think a single line from "modern drunkard magazine" is enough to convince me it really goes back that far and means "bring your own basket". It's probably completely made up, acronyms/intialisms are very rare until the mid-20th century--81.152.90.31 15:26, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Is this "Wikipedia for Trekkies?"

edit

YTF is something about Star Trek in this article? completely inappropriate!

Chill, Trek is cool. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.122.63.142 (talk) 20:31, 27 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually it's for relevant data, "Bring your own bat'leth" (BYOB). I think it should be included. Tristyn 20:30, 2 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bring Your Own Bitch

edit

OR1984, do you have a good source for BYOB = "Bring Your Own Bitch"? If so, please add that reference as well as your contribution (See WP:OR). Thanks!—C45207 | Talk 03:55, 8 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for finding that source. Do you have a another source in addition to Urban Dictionary? Like the American Slang Dictionary or The Oxford Dictionary of Slang?—C45207 | Talk 23:29, 8 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

BYO in Melbourne area

edit

When I lived in Melbourne, the BYO meant the possibility to bring (and consume) someone's own alcoholic drink in a restaurant, that is NOT licenced to sell such drinks. So, the trick was that even though the restaurant was not allowed to sell beer or wine (due to the strict regulations requiring consent from many neighbours, etc) the guests could consume alcoholic drinks from their own. It was a straight and clear regulation (perhaps a simplified solution of the overcomplicated English legal system) but the key point is that the legal system does not allow something, and the life and the common sense of the regular people find a solution to a problem. Aussies sometime come up with great ways, this is one of them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.98.146.245 (talk) 20:19, 19 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Move "alternate meaning" to disambig section?

edit

I'd like to replace the "alternate meaning" section that refers to the BYOB programming language with an addition to the "for the song..." disambiguation at the top of the page: "For the programming language (Build Your Own Blocks) see Scratch (programming language)" but I'm not sure if doing so would violate the rule against writing about one's own work. Not an acronym

edit

This is actually not an acronym. Acronyms are "words" like RADAR, SCUBA, words that are typically pronounced, as opposed to saying the specific letters, as in FBI. "BYOB" is an initialism. See this link for more information. I wonder if all these pages which are described as acronyms but are not ought to be renamed. MsFionnuala (talk) 15:39, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Excellent point. This article does need to be renamed. But I honestly don't think BYOB (initialism) is much better (even if it is more accurate). Since this article is beverage related I would recommend something like BYOB (beverage) or we just shorten the title to BYO which is currently a redirect here. With a dab link at BYOB (disambiguation) it will be easy for readers to find. AgneCheese/Wine 18:53, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
No, I suppose it's not. I doubt most people even know what an initialism is. Even my browser spell check puts a little red squiggly line under it. :) I think BYOB (beverage) is a good proposal. I think it would be clear what the page referred to in that case. MsFionnuala (talk) 23:41, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'll wait a week or so to see if there is other comment; if not, will rename the page to BYOB (beverage) if there are no objections. MsFionnuala (talk) 13:00, 19 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sounds fair and reasonable. AgneCheese/Wine 17:38, 19 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

BYOB (beverage)BYOB – It isn't a beverage, but it is already the target of the proposed destination anyway. 216.8.148.170 (talk) 11:52, 24 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

In this section, there is a flag for inappropriate second-person usage of "you." I fixed it, could someone look it over before I delete the flag? Katieb181 (talk) 18:14, 26 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
