What the f*ck is "lakh"?? What the f*ck is "crore"?? Write English in the English wiki!!! And what is "2,00,000" meant to be?? 2,000,000? EminEd
American English isn't the only form of English on earth. Lakh and Crore should be left in (for the uninformed, lakh=1,00,000 and crore=1,00,00,000, and that is a perfectly acceptable way of writing numbers.
No, American English SURE is not the only form of English on earth, but we need a common standard here in the Wikipedia, and British English / American English happens to be the oldest and most widespread versions of English; THEY are the ones most widely taught at schools, and understood by many peoples all over the world. And it does not help WP and the vast majority of folks along if nationalist nuts insist on dubbing their local pidgin here! By the way, I am NOT american; not even a native English speaker - but the more do I depend on speech according to the accepted standards: regional BS of standard-breaking eccentric chauvinists makes my life - and the lives of billions - more difficult, and completely unnecesssarily!! If you must, go ahead and found a wikipedia in your local dialect, together with others who are fond of that; you're free to do so (and use a numbers notation system with basis 13, go ahead, I don't care) - but here, stick to the linguistic conventions!!
- The terms are not well known outside of the subcontinent, and since this is an international encyclopedia, they shouldn't be used. -R. S. Shaw 03:36, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- and yet the terms are well defined and anyone who wishes to learn more about India will need to know what they mean. I suppose today's "give it to me on a plate" generation are incapable of doing a google search to find out what they mean, and then creating a wiki definition of them? No. Too lazy no doubt. Greglocock 10:08, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- The Wikipedia Manual of style (WP:MOS) is abundantly clear on this point. Whilst it is fine (indeed expected) to use Indian-English dialect in a regional article like this, one should not intentionally make things hard for non-Indian-English speakers. It specifically states:
- Try to find words that are common to all.
- In choosing words or expressions (especially article titles) there may be value in selecting one that does not have multiple variant spellings if there are synonyms that are otherwise equally suitable and reasonable. In extreme cases of conflicting names, a contrived substitute (such as fixed-wing aircraft) is acceptable.
- Try to find words that are common to all.
- Since it is perfectly OK for Indian-English speakers to use 'hundred thousand' and 'million' without confusion or ambiguity - but almost zero British or American or Australian or Canadian English speakers will have the faintest clue what Lakh and Cror mean. So you should use terms common to all English dialects where possible rather than terms that will be utterly incomprehensible to most of our readers. I understand that you'd like to educate people but some people just want to find out about Indian automobiles and don't want to be hassled by having to search to find out what all of these obscure terms mean. SteveBaker 01:31, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
- The Indian number 12,34,56,789 means British and American 123,456,789 . The two out-of-place commas mean lakh (= 100,000) and crore (= 10,000,000). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 21:42, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Two and 3 wheeler production
editThe tables for 2-3 wheeler production can be added in a different table in addition to the original table. Too many columns make the data appear confusing and difficult to read and comprehend. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Svmandke (talk • contribs) 03:42, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
4 metre size limit
editThere's nothing in this article about the Indian fiscal ruling limiting a specific class of vehicles to 4 metres in length and 1.2 litre engines. I'd like to know more about it. --Pc13 (talk) 19:42, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
Lenght of Article
editThe entire article is far too long, and should be shortened. It's also quite boring; as i read through the article, i realised that i was no longer taking in any information - my eyes were just gliding over the words. A disappointing read. Bmuni (talk) 05:11, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
Number of cars in India
editThe article states that in 2010 there were 40m cars in India. However, the Economic Survey 2010-11, part of the Indian Union budget, quotes the 2005 figure of 89.6m registered vehicles (Statistical tables here: http://exim.indiamart.com/economic-survey10-11/, search for registered vehicles). I'm probably missing something, but if anyone with more clue than me could have a look??
Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.35.98.116 (talk) 10:22, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Copyright violation
editThis large contribution in April 2011 introduced a quantity of clear copyright violating material to the article. I have removed some of the obvious WP:COPYVIO material, but a lot remains. Anyone care to address it?

Written like an advertisement?
editThe very introduction to the article claims that the content is written like an advertisement. This statement is wholly unsupported by the article, which mentions dozens of brands and companies. Suggest that the warning be removed unless the person issuing the warning can substantiate the charge. Sooku (talk) 03:25, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, that is a very old template (December 2012) and a lot has happened since then to make the content more encyclopedic, including much just after that template was placed. In fact, the article now has a barren, one-sentence lead, since the most recent removal of material that violated copyright. I think it's safe to remove that template. Partition this huge article
edit
Article is way too big. Please split it into the following separate articlesL
- Automotive industry in India: retain the existing article after moving text out of it to following 2 new articles.
- History of automotive industry in India: move the "History" sections to the new article, retain only summary in the current article.
- Vehicle manufacturers in India: move the following 4 sections to the new "list" article.
- "Manufacturing facilities",
- "Passenger vehicle manufacturers in India"
- "Commercial vehicle manufacturers in India"
- "Driverless Technology in India"
Note: Also move some of the "see also" items from the current article to new articles/lists.
Thanks. 58.182.176.169 (talk) 10:24, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
- I support the split. However, I suppose that a) "vehicle manufacturers by xyz" would be a list rather than an article, and that b) only one such list would be required. This is because two seperate lists would create redundancy; it is much easier to have a list titled "Vehicle manufacturers in India" which could be sorted by various different criteria such as state, type, year of introduction, etc. Best regards, --Johannes (Talk) (Contribs) (Articles) 11:12, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
Yes, Johannes Maximilian, I agree with you. I have modified the split template and the proposal accordingly that all manufacturers should be put into one article. Thanks for the suggestion and support. Since I am an IP, I can not split (long term Ip "by choice", do not wish to register as user). Please go ahead and split it. I will then do the clean up, e.g. summarise those articles into here. Thanks. 58.182.176.169 (talk) 11:22, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
