the nickname hanoumakia is insulting so i removed it. We can call Olympiakos "arouraioi" or Panathinaikos "lagoi". So we understand that it is insulting.

Good thing you removed the article from the AEK website. It is mostly propaganda. Like when it says AEK is a refugee organization. That's so wrong! AEK was established in 1924 which is almost two years after the end of hostilities between Greece and Turkey in the war of 1919-1922 and one whole year after the 1923 Treaty of Laussanne. Those who founded AEK came to Greece with the population exchange agreement, they did not come as refugees, like Apollon and Panionios from Smyrni who's members were pursued and persecuted by the turkish kemalist army forces. Please make the necessary corrections. [dimitriosp (at) HotMail (dot) com - 10/1/2017]

I don't agree with your view that AEK's claim to be a "refugee club" is propaganda. Firstly, the Greek population of Constantinople was exempt from the population exchange in 1923, but there was a steady decline in The City's Greek population from as early as 1919 - many men fled with their families to avoid conscription to the Ottoman Army, while others fled to avoid Turkish nationalist reprisals. While not, arguably, pogroms, the gradual introduction of measures (and later, laws) by the Turks to exclude and isolate the Greek population made their lives in the city untenable, hence the steady exodus to Greece. The population of Nea Filadelfia - where AEK was established - much like other suburbs such as Nea Smyrni and Nea Ionia, did not comprise of only Constantinopolitans (many of whom were, indeed, refugees), but refugees from all over Asia Minor. The Constantinopolitans were the driving force in creating AEK in 1924, but they created the club for all the refugees from Asia Minor, as is evident in the background of its athletes and supporters.Dragases (talk) 09:01, 3 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

AEK FC or AEK Athens FC edit

I recommend that we move the article to AEK FC; this is the official name of the club. AEK Athens FC is only used by UEFA. Opinions? Dragases

In articles on Wikipedia, the UEFA usage is normally used. In English usage, the team is normally referred to as "AEK Athens" (except by the idiot sportscaster on Sky News who pronounces it "Ike"!) -- Arwel (talk) 18:08, 23 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

The team name is actually pronounced AH-ek (It's the idiot sportscasters that pronounce it A.E.K. that annoy me). Anyway, it's not a huge issue, just a suggestion... as an AEK fan, I prefer AEK FC. Dragases

Not to insult Greek sensibilities, but this is an English-language article, so while the K may stand for Constantinople, the city was Istanbul when the refugees left and is still named as such. Perhaps a short parenthetical mention that the Greeks still call it Constantinople, rather than just using the term? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.100.73.252 (talk) 13:46, 18 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the city's name was officially changed to İstanbul in 1930, so there is no need for a parenthetical mention.Dragases (talk) 11:22, 26 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Major Rewrite edit

I've done a major rewrite of the existing article to make it a flow a little better and to make it little more palatable to Wikipedia tastes (less biased/POV). I've also separated the History section into major eras (20 year blocks), and added a Kit Evolution section. Please let me know of any errors - detailed information on the club is a little difficult to obtain when you're not in Greece... P.S. A credit to Phantis Wiki for the various player bios. AEK Kit Evolution edit

Even though most of the kits I've included in the Evolution section are accurate, some may not be due to a lack of accessible club photographic material at the time. In these cases, I've made an educated guess. Please feel free to adjust if you are sure about a specific kit. Cheers. Dragases 08:22, 26 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Recent Deletions/Modifications edit

I noticed that user 85.75.222.152 recently deleted a few small sections in the article with regard to AEK's links to the Istanbul-based Pera Club. Though not a direct continuation of AEK or PAOK, I believe that it is important to at least mention the link that Pera Club (or at least, its athletes) had with AEK and PAOK. If AEK did not consider it's link to Pera Club important, then I don't believe club officials would have bothered to visit Pera Club during their recent trip to Istanbul as part of AEK's 80th Anniversary.Dragases 01:22, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Also, AEK's championship titles of 1941 and 1943 - during the Axis occupation - may not be officially recognised by the HFF (a reason it has been omitted from the official titles section), but I do believe that the fact should be mentioned as part of the History section.Dragases 01:22, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Veteran Players' Numbers edit

Having veteran players listed with their numbers can be a problem. Players change positions and change numbers.

I corrected Mimis Papaioannou's number to 10 because he was an inside-left when he won the two top-scorer titles in the 60's. Nestoridis wore number 9 when Papaioannou won his first title. I think Karafeskos wore it in 1966.

Andreas Stamatiadis was an outside-right and wore number 7 throughout the 60's. --Irlandos (talk) 14:38, 29 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Start Class? edit

It is a let down that the new and improved article was rated as "start", seeing how the poorer predecessor was rated "B". Would the addition of footnotes help in raising the grade?XVA 10:47, 15 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

The ratings are not about quality, per se. For this article to be rated B Class, sources are key. They do not have to be inline citations for the article to be B Class, but inline citations would help it become a "Good Article," so why not just do it all at once. The championships of 1940/41 and 1942/1943 officially started (the 1942/43 started twice!) but didn't finish due to the Greco-Italian War. So i think we should include them as long as we note that. --Darth21 13:51, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

The reverts to 13 are starting to become annoying. The official tally of Championships is 11. I, as much as the next AEK fan, would love to see EPO recognise the additional 2 Championships, but until they do - it's 11.Dragases 06:44, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Biggest wins edit

there wasn't a league in 1940-41, although u have invented not only a league but an official win 7-3 against Olympiakos. Go to www.epo.gr and see if there has been a league in year 1940-41. this is of course an unofficial game which u have put in a fictional 1940-41 league.

The 1940-41 league DID start and AEK DID win Olympikos 7-3 (29-09-1940). The championship stopped because of the Greco-Italian War (28-10-1940) but until then the matches were official. --Darth21 12:03, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Kit edit

"In Greece there are no Home and Away kits, per se. Teams always wear their 1st kit unless there is a resemblance between both team kits."

And in which country it isn't this way? There is no need to emphasize something like this.Zhelja (talk) 01:21, 8 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I believe there is a need to emphasise this. In England and Australia (to name a few), teams playing at home always wear their home kit and away teams must always revert to their away kit if the colours are similar to the home team. In Greece, however, the home team is obliged to change to its alternate kit as a courtesy. There is a difference. Dragases (talk) 11:21, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fair point, but it doesn't say so in the article. Maybe it should. So, the home team changes their kit? If, say, Aris play at home with AEK, it will be AEK wearing yellow? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zhelja (talkcontribs) 23:21, 5 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the home team changes their kit as a courtesy. In the recent play-off game between AEK - Aris (at AEK's home ground) AEK wore all-white while Aris wore their home colours of yellow and black. 203.15.18.20 (talk) 06:30, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

AEK Athens F.C.AEK F.C. — per Wikipedia:Naming conventions#Sports teams. First, since the team is Greek, and their name is officially written using the Greek alphabet, there will obviously be ambiguity over the correct spelling of the club's name in English. However, this can be overcome by the fact that the club's official website (http://www.aekfc.gr/) has an English language section (http://www.aekfc.gr/index.asp?a_id=296), where it can be seen that the club calls itself "AEK F.C." in numerous locations. This name is obviously recognisable, as it is not too dissimilar from the current name of the club's article here on Wikipedia (AEK Athens F.C.). It is not easily confused with other clubs' names either, as each of the other football teams with "AEK" in their name also include their location as a differentiator from this AEK. Finally, this name has been adopted by a significant section of the English media, as shown by this Google News search. This search shows that just as many of the returned articles refer to the team as "AEK" or "AEK FC" as refer to the team as "AEK Athens". Therefore, the proposed name satisfies all of the criteria for no ambiguity over the club's English name, and the article should be moved to "AEK F.C." – PeeJay 23:58, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Any additional comments:
  • Not sure about this one. In normal circumstances I would be inclined to support, but we're probably going to have to use a disambiguation term to avoid confusion with AEK from Larnaca in Cyprus anyway, and AEK F.C. (Athens) would probably be ugly and less intuitive. - fchd (talk) 06:50, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • Having looked at AEK Larnaca's website, it seems to me that their official name is "AEK Larnaka", indicating that they, like AEK Patras, already use a locational disambiguator to differentiate themselves from AEK F.C. – PeeJay 09:32, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
      • I would say that by the same logic we could request a move of PFC CSKA Moscow to PFC CSKA (website), because the only other popular football club named "CSKA" is from Sofia, and it refers to itself as "FC CSKA Sofia" (website). But I don't think that this move request will go through.  ARTYOM  11:35, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
        • I agree that a move of PFC CSKA Moscow to PFC CSKA would be the next logical step, but for the time being, I think we should judge each case on its individual merits. Also, CSKA Sofia is an interesting case. In some parts of their official website, the club is referred to as FC CSKA Sofia, whereas in other parts, they use PFC CSKA. Quite confusing. – PeeJay 11:52, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose As fchd's comment illustrates, the name AEK alone can be confused with other clubs. Oldelpaso (talk) 16:54, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • 1),As you can see everywere outside of Greece ,it's known as AEK Athens....even UEFA Link to AEK Athens (Europe's head goverment body) call's it AEK Athens, people in Greece know that AEK Athens refer's to AEK......im sure people in lets say Norway if you asked them "you know AEK" there would be a better chance of knowing what your talking about if you said AEK Athens,2)the name AEK alone can be confused with other clubs.

The most important "title" AEK has and should be proud of is its name and insignia: Constantinople and the Double-headed eagle. Turks have tried to erase this historical name and sign in cases that AEK played in Turkey. It is said that even anti-ethnic circles in Greece are trying to downgrade AEK and PAOK because of their signs and names. All real Greeks support and promote AEK in international media like Wikipedia.--Skylax30 (talk) 08:55, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Line-up image edit

I've removed an image showing what puports to be the AEK line-up from the players section. As this will change game-by-game it is very recentist, and as such should be discouraged. Secondly, without sources explicitly stating line-up, formation, etc, (rather than compiling appearance data from the current season) this is original research. Ilikeeatingwaffles (talk) 08:35, 2 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

If that is the case, then why do other Greek teams like Olympiacos F.C., Panathinaikos F.C. and PAOK F.C. still have the image on them. Doesn't make sense. If you want to see a game-by-game explanation of roster changes, go here. The starting lineup on the image provided here is the one the coach uses most in training, the press shows the most, and is partly based on the linked page's stats as well. Recentist policy does not apply here. Could I restore it now? - JEA13 (talk) 14:53, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not a good argument for retention, besides there is no source. You won't find any football club articles that have reached featured article status that have this kind of image on, and these are the closest to a gold standard that exists. I don't understand why you don't think that recentism doesn't apply? Ilikeeatingwaffles (talk) 15:48, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
An image depicting the most used formation during a certain season does per definitionem not belong into an article which deals with general information on a club. It might also not be suitable for the respective season articles such as 2010–11 AEK Athens F.C. season unless there is a reliable source which exactly mirrors the aspect which is intended to be presented. Any self-conducted synthesis of multiple sources, e.g. match reports, constitutes original research and is therefore not permitted. It's too much yellow on list of players and it hurts your eyes to read. I understand that this matches with the colors of the team but it would be better to change back to what we had before. Anybody agrees? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eurosergiu (talkcontribs) 21:03, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes I've removed it a couple of times now. Makes the article look like a fansite. Ilikeeatingwaffles (talk) 13:38, 1 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Season to season edit

Does this mean adding AEK's results every season? If this is the case, I could help in that. Psyrras Panagiotis 13:09, 1 February 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sinis smooth (talkcontribs)

Dead link edit

During several automated bot runs the following external link was found to be unavailable. Please check if the link is in fact down and fix or remove it in that case!

A.E.K. Athens F.C. or AEK Athens F.C.? edit

  • I personally prefer the page to be called AEK Athens F.C..
I do recognize that in Greek the page is called A.E.K. Athens, but non-greek speakers tend to prefer it "ay ee kay", which is something that can't be pronounced.
AEK, despite the fact that is the official UEFA name[1][2], makes the name sound better. This is why all club dots on their abbreviations are vanished. (e.g. AIK Stockholm, HJK and PAE Kerkyra)
Imagine how all nordic (and not only) clubs would be if dots were entered into their names! In last Champions League, no dots were depicted in their matches' boards. –SteliosGR (talk), 12:42 UTC, 6 June 2014.
  1. ^ "UEFA Team Ranking 2014".
  2. ^ "AEK - UEFA.com". UEFA.
  • I renamed the page to AEK Athens F.C.. Please for any objection talk to me in my own profile. –SteliosGR (talk), 13:32 UTC, 6 June 2014.

Full-protected edit request on 14 May 2015 edit

I do ask for a full protection of this page for several reasons. Firstly, it must not be allowed to anyone to change true updates of tranfers by the club (a prime example will be the tranfer of Rodrigo Galo Brito, myself made this update yesterday and someone reverted my action, you can find evidence of the tranfer in the player's wikipedia page at the section of references, written in the Greek language). Secondly, people constantly change and revert my work about this football club which is always based on real facts, I strongly believe that this happens due to the ignorance of these users about the history of the club. This also happens because many of these people act on behalf of other clubs (fans and not 'healthy' supporters of the game of football in Greece) as fan-vandalists to change the history of other clubs and promote their own club. Moreover, due to the situation of the Greek football at the moment we should stop such actions and help the promotion of a wider knowledge context for each football club through the improvement and protection of these pages.

Many thanks in advance.

Finishing place of AEK in the Greek Superleague edit

According to the 2016–17_Superleague_Greece#League_table, AEK finished 4th. Therefore, this reversion is incorrect. Dr. K. 13:36, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yes and no. They ended 4th in the league play, but they won the play-off between team 2 to 5, and is therefore awarded place 2 (and Champions League participation), as shown here (and in the source). A strange system that probably should be explained better. --T*U (talk) 14:59, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks T*U for the explanation. Strange system indeed, but I can see that. The thing is when we say in the infobox 2016–17_Superleague_Greece, then we should use the final table of the Superleague, not of the matchups. Except if the matchups also change the final table standings, in which case we should revise the table itself. Dr. K. 15:31, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Again I think it is "Yes and no", so the best solution is to show both. I'll make a try. --T*U (talk) 18:27, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
What a mess. But I think your solution is great. Thanks again T*U. Dr. K. 04:44, 2 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
