Leaflet for Wikiproject Washington Metro at Wikimania 2014

 

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

Station layout

Could someone point me towards the conventions, if any, for the “Station layout” sections which appear in the articles about individual stations? I've noticed that the layouts of some stations that I'm familiar with don't seem to match the layouts mentioned in their articles, and I want to make sure I'm interpreting the terms and symbols correctly. Talk page wisdom at WP:ARCHIVENOTDELETE suggests that old discussion topics be archived when a talk page grows beyond 10 main sections or 75 kb. This talk page has passed both of those milestones (it's currently at 62 sections and 100 kb). I'm thinking of setting up minimal archiving, manually to start. Any thoughts or objections to that?  Unician   06:15, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

I'm going to use User:Equazcion/OneClickArchiver.js to manually archive old discussion topics, as there isn't enough current activity to bother one of the archive bots. (If that should change, the config can be expanded for bot archiving.)  Unician   09:14, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. WikiProject X is live!

Question: naming conventions

Which one is under the naming conventions between to use [[Station Name station]] and to use [[Station Name Station]]. User:Salvidrim! says there is general consensus to use the lowercase titles (Greenbelt station) while User:Jenks24 moved Potomac Ave station to Potomac Ave Station, saying no consensus (Potomac Ave Station). All the stations should be moved in one form under the current naming conventions. I don't care what name is used. I hope that participants of this WikiProject settle this matter. Jesus, what a mess. Did the MRV Salvidrim! closed cover all Washington Metro stations? If so, they should all be moved to whatever he judged the consensus to be. If not and it was only discussing certain stations, then we probably need a new centralised discussion somewhere. Jenks24 (talk) 13:16, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
  • It's not as simple -- the "official" outcome technically only covers the articles that were discussed originally, however the discussions seem to indicate an overall consensus to generally use the lowercase titles... so you could see it either way. My original recommendation stands: this should be discussed at WT:USSTATION about a wider policy covering this type or article, and not about individual piece-by-piece articles.  · Salvidrim! ·  17:02, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

WMATA logo in infobox title

Several IP addresses (almost certainly a single editor with a dynamic IP) has been adding the WMATA logo to the title of infoboxes. It is my understanding that the title is intended to match the appearance of station signs, and thus the logo should not be included. However, I wanted to check here before I mass-reverted. A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Metrobus articles

Hi all! While I know this WikiProject is inactive, I thought this would be the best place for a centralized discussion of the Metrobus articles and was hoping to ping some users. The current state of these articles is less than stellar for Wikipedia's Manual of Style standards. As I have told Doctor of Directions (here and here) and Swagging (here) multiple times, the policies and guidelines of Wikipedia need to be followed when creating and editing an article and edit summaries need to be used, especially when making widespread changes to an article. The state of List of bus routes in Manhattan is where we need to get List of Metrobus routes (Washington, D.C.), as that article is an absolute atrocity: there is absolutely no reason for there to be that much information for each route, especially if it has its own article. The Manhattan article is very nicely laid out with links to the timetables and a note here and there. The purpose for creating individual articles was to free up space on the list article, but that hasn't been done.

A few notes:

Doctor of Directions and Swagging: we are here to help you, and so is Wikipedia! If you need help, start with the intro to Wikipedia's Manual of Style and this if you need help finding sources.

Daybeers, Thanks for the comments. I haven't edited much on WMATA articles recently, but try also posting on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject District of Columbia. It seems like a lot of bus route articles need to be cleaned up, though the folks at the DC wikiproject may be able to help out. epicgenius (talk) 13:16, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

It appears, however, that Doctor of Directions has either not read this or has ignored it, shown by the addition of far too wordy content here and the addition of unnecessary images. I will agree on this too, but I see that C16sh was recently arguing about this, on my talkpage. I closed that discussion, until you guys brought this up, but I go in favor of this. As Swagging says, "We aren't perfect." Leobran2018 (talk) 13:30, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for that! A good discussion that needs to be brought up here: I generally agree with C16sh that the bus stop tables aren't needed on the route articles and go against WP:NOTGUIDE. They don't add much to the article, and if a reader really wants to find out where the route stops, there is an easily accessible link to the timetable in the infobox. – Daybeers (talk) 08:59, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

You just added over 1000 bytes and didn't say anything and seemingly didn't read what I said because you slowly added back the images I removed from New Carrollton–Silver Spring Line in this edit. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
