Leaflet for Wikiproject Washington Metro at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

Station layout

Could someone point me towards the conventions, if any, for the “Station layout” sections which appear in the articles about individual stations? I've noticed that the layouts of some stations that I'm familiar with don't seem to match the layouts mentioned in their articles, and I want to make sure I'm interpreting the terms and symbols correctly. Talk page wisdom at WP:ARCHIVENOTDELETE suggests that old discussion topics be archived when a talk page grows beyond 10 main sections or 75 kb. This talk page has passed both of those milestones (it's currently at 62 sections and 100 kb). I'm thinking of setting up minimal archiving, manually to start. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Question: naming conventions

Which one is under the naming conventions between to use [[Station Name station]] and to use [[Station Name Station]]. User:Salvidrim! says there is general consensus to use the lowercase titles (Greenbelt station) while User:Jenks24 moved Potomac Ave station to Potomac Ave Station, saying no consensus (Potomac Ave Station). All the stations should be moved in one form under the current naming conventions. I don't care what name is used. I hope that participants of this WikiProject settle this matter. Jesus, what a mess. Did the MRV Salvidrim! closed cover all Washington Metro stations? If so, they should all be moved to whatever he judged the consensus to be. If not and it was only discussing certain stations, then we probably need a new centralised discussion somewhere. Jenks24 (talk) 13:16, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

• It's not as simple -- the "official" outcome technically only covers the articles that were discussed originally, however the discussions seem to indicate an overall consensus to generally use the lowercase titles... so you could see it either way. My original recommendation stands: this should be discussed at WT:USSTATION about a wider policy covering this type or article, and not about individual piece-by-piece articles. ☺ · Salvidrim! · ✉ 17:02, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

WMATA logo in infobox title

Several IP addresses (almost certainly a single editor with a dynamic IP) has been adding the WMATA logo to the title of infoboxes. It is my understanding that the title is intended to match the appearance of station signs, and thus the logo should not be included. However, I wanted to check here before I mass-reverted. Metrobus articles

Hi all! While I know this WikiProject is inactive, I thought this would be the best place for a centralized discussion of the Metrobus articles and was hoping to ping some users. The current state of these articles is less than stellar for Wikipedia's Manual of Style standards. As I have told Doctor of Directions (here and here) and Swagging (here) multiple times, the policies and guidelines of Wikipedia need to be followed when creating and editing an article and edit summaries need to be used, especially when making widespread changes to an article. The state of List of bus routes in Manhattan is where we need to get List of Metrobus routes (Washington, D.C.), as that article is an absolute atrocity: there is absolutely no reason for there to be that much information for each route, especially if it has its own article. The Manhattan article is very nicely laid out with links to the timetables and a note here and there. The purpose for creating individual articles was to free up space on the list article, but that hasn't been done.

A few notes:

• Overall the articles are just too wordy. Take a look at the changes I made to Wisconsin Avenue Line here and New Carrollton–Fort Totten Line here and here to make the wording more concise and incorporate the notes below. Only talk about one route at a time, ex. in the paragraph below, I only kept the first sentence because the rest just wasn't needed.
  • "F6's former service between the University of Maryland College Park Campus and Greenbelt Center was replaced by service from route C2, which was extended from its previous terminus at Beltway Plaza to the Greenbelt Center. C2 and F6 used to have duplicate service on a portion of their previous routes as they both ran parallel to each other between the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center and Beltway Plaza, until December 11, 1993, when C2 was rerouted to follow a more straightforward path by remaining on University Boulevard until Campus Drive and heading straight to Greenbelt without diverting onto any roads to serve the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center, and then head back again on Belcrest Road and Adelphi Road to join the University of Maryland College Park Campus and head to Greenbelt, Maryland. C2's former diversion was replaced with C4 service which was extended from its previous Langley Park terminus, to operate further east to the Prince George's Plaza station instead."
• All of the direction descriptions for the route (ex. "83 was then rerouted to divert right onto Paint Branch Parkway and make another right onto River Road to serve College Park–University of Maryland station, and then make a left turn back again onto River Road, another left turn onto Paint Branch Parkway, and make a right turn to once again rejoin Baltimore Avenue.") are not needed and go against the things Wikipedia is not, namely not a travel guide.
• In general, only the first word of headings should be capitalized: see MOS:CAPS and MOS:HEADINGS. Same goes with nouns. "Metrobus" is capitalized since it is a brand, but "Route" is not. "Station" is not capitalized per WP:USSTATION.
• Please read MOS:DASH for Wikipedia's usage of the en dash (–) and em dash (—). Wikipedia does not use the hypen (-).
• Content needs reliable sources and can't come from original research.
• References go after any punctuation. They shouldn't be bare URLs, rather they should use templates such as {{Cite web}} or {{Cite press release}}. Titles should be the title of the article or press release, not the webpage title. The dates inside should use the "month day, year" format as outlined in MOS:DATES.
• In general, articles should only be linked to once in an article. See WP:OVERLINK.
• Images need to add value to the article, otherwise they clutter it up and risk interfering with the flow of the text. See MOS:IMAGERELEVANCE.
• Pay attention to verb tense, especially when writing about route changes. They usually have already happened, so use "operates" instead of "will operate".
• The "communities served", "landmarks", and "via" parameters in {{infobox bus line}} need to be used sparingly. The lists on College Park–Bethesda MetroExtra line are far too long.
• I'd say a Google Maps link isn't a reliable source for the length of a route.
• Bus divisions need a source.
• Articles in good shape: Friendship Heights–Southeast Line, New Carrollton–Fort Totten Line, Wisconsin Avenue Line, Metroway
• Articles that need some work: New Carrollton–Silver Spring Line, College Park Line, National Harbor–Alexandria Line, Pennsylvania Avenue Line (Washington, D.C.), Greenbelt–BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport Express Line, Friendship Heights–Southeast Line, National Harbor–Southern Avenue Line, Richmond Highway Express, Rhode Island Avenue–New Carrollton Line, Sheriff Road–Capitol Heights Line, Columbia Pike line, Columbia Pike–Pentagon City line, Barcroft–South Fairlington Line
• Articles that need substantial work: List of Metrobus routes (Washington, D.C.), Metrobus (Washington, D.C.), Greenbelt–Twinbrook Line, Greenbelt–Fort Totten Line, Martin Luther King Jr. Highway Line, Riggs Road Line, Queens Chapel Road Line, Kenilworth Avenue Line, Mount Pleasant Line, Connecticut Avenue Line,

Daybeers, Thanks for the comments. I haven't edited much on WMATA articles recently, but try also posting on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject District of Columbia. Thanks for that! A good discussion that needs to be brought up here: I generally agree with C16sh that the bus stop tables aren't needed on the route articles and go against WP:NOTGUIDE. They don't add much to the article, and if a reader really wants to find out where the route stops, there is an easily accessible link to the timetable in the infobox. – Daybeers (talk) 08:59, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
