Speakers of the House of Burgesses

Wikipedia needs List of Speakers of the House of Burgesses, the colonial counterpart of List of Speakers of the Virginia House of Delegates. For what it's worth, I just found a copy of Jon Kukla's Speakers and Clerks of the Virginia House of Burgesses, 1643-1776 on Amazon. John Paul duplicate articles

John Paul (1883-1964) and John Paul, Jr. (1883 - 1964) appear to be the same person, with substantial content in both articles, and were marked for merge proposal on 1 Feb 2008 since when there has been no discussion. One is marked for WikiProject Biography/Politics and government and one for WikiProject Virginia, so I'm putting this note on both talk pages in the hope that someone interested will sort him out! Is the city of Fairfax really the county seat of Fairfax County?

I checked to see if the City of Fairfax is actually the seat of Fairfax County.

• the City of Fairfax has a little "hole" that is under county jurisdiction, as seen in this Census Bureau map: [1]
• The county courthouse is at 4110 Chain Bridge Road Fairfax, Virginia 22030, which is inside the hole [2]
• The county magistrate is at 10520 Judicial Drive, within the hole [3]

So are they the administrative buildings of the county? If so, Fairfax is not the county seat as the county buildings are in a "hole" under county jurisdiction. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:07, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Is there a law that says that the City is the county seat? It seems like all of the county government buildings are not in the City of Fairfax. There probably is a law made. You will have to check with the Fairfax County offices for that. In Winchester, some of the City of Winchester (an Independent City in it's own right) are in Frederick County and Winchester is the county seat of Frederick County. So, just because some of the county offices are outside of Fairfax City proper, doesn't mean that Fairfax isn't the county seat. - NeutralHomer • Talk • April 4, 2009 @ 00:16

I'd have to see too - It's that the county buildings are located in the county an "island" that is not controlled by the City of Fairfax. OK, let me try and explain this....the City of Fairfax is an Independent city and its own county (Fairfax City County...no really). At the same time, the City of Fairfax is the county seat of Fairfax County. City offices can be in the City of Fairfax at the same time County offices can be. It really doesn't matter. I am aware that the city and county are completely separate. It's that the county buildings are not within the city, but the county. OK, I admit I obviously didn't look at the map clearly the first time. Cause that is the weirdest damned thing I have ever seen in my life. Fairfax is still the county seat, but for Fairfax County to put County offices in the City and then make that part of the County is just plain goofy. 99% of the other county seats that involve Independent Cities, the County offices are in the Independent City. It's not all that weird. The city was a town within the county until it received a city charter in 1961. The county courthouse and administrative offices were already in place, and the enclave was drawn to keep them in the county. There are more bizarre lines in other places. As I recall, Hoover, Alabama's original boundaries were drawn so that the interiors of blocks were in the city limits but the streets were not. I am a Fairfax County resident who lives about 200 yards from the city limits. My address, as well as addresses even at a farther distance, is "Fairfax, Va." I have to admit that after living in the Hampton Roads area for so long, it took me a while to get used to boundaries not being so cut-and-dry. There, if you weren't in one city, you were in another (i.e., you leave the City of Norfolk, you're either in Hampton, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, or Chesapeake--there's no middle ground. Though legally the county offices are within the limits of the county, that is, on county-governed land, the address and culture is still that of Fairfax. Similar things happen in and around Alexandria. People who live in Fairfax County will tell you that they live in Alexandria because of their address is that of Alexandria. Also, with both Fairfax and Alexandria, the city provides services to these areas that are outside the city limits. Notably, in Fairfax City, the city bus system serves the area of Fairfax County where the courthouse lies. In my neighborhood of Fairfax County, the City of Fairfax also provides water services (but oddly not sewer). The point is, the areas of the county in question are still grouped with the city for many statistical purposes. I could be wrong, but they might even be incorporated with the city for census purposes--including the government center that was mentioned earlier.

State supreme court category

I created this category for your state supreme court chief justices, and have added all that list that title in their article. But it looks like the name of the court and the title has changed over the years, so as a project you might want to decide if the "president" office holders should also be added. Seven City, Seven Cities, Hampton Roads merger

I see no need for three separate articles for Seven City, Seven Cities of Hampton Roads, and Hampton Roads. Seven City and Seven Cities of Hampton Roads should be merged into the main Hampton Roads article. At the very least, get rid of Seven City. JeffConn (talk) 17:32, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

GA Reassessment of George Washington

I have done a GA Reassessment of the George Washington article as part of the GA Sweeps project. I have found the article to need work on referencing. My review is here. I am notifying all the interested projects that this article is on hold for a week pending work that needs to be done. I don't think it will require too much to satisfy the GA Criteria and I sincerely hope that someone will step forward and take this project on. Virginia for FAC

Hello all. I'm posting this because I'd like to put Virginia back up for Featured Article Candidate, and hope that the third time's the charm. I'm looking for any suggestions editors here might have with the article before I do that. Also, since its been a while since I navigated the FAC, any suggestions from someone whose done it more recently, as it keeps getting more difficult. Native Americans in Chesterfield

A 9-14-2009 edit by ForestAngel of the Chesterfield County, Virginia, article deleted the sentence: "Prior to English colonization, the area was occupied by Native Americans, who the Europeans called "Indians"." ForestAngel's comment is: "wow, no shit. Did these "indians" live in teepees and make wampum? This isn't a 4th grade report. We're assuming the reader isn't retarded."

I agree that the Indians comment is patronizing and not needed, but wouldn't it be better to leave the first part of the statement and add which particular group of Native Americans lived in the area? I don't find ForestAngel's editorial comment or tone helpful.

Merger of Parson's Cause and Two Penny Act

Anyone here interested in colonial Virginia? If so, maybe you'll want to stroll over to Two Penny Act and merge and redirect it into Parson's Cause. There's no need for an article on the Two Penny Act; everything we need to say about it will be covered in the slightly broader Parson's Cause. I don't have time to do it myself, and so I mention it here rather than slap a "merge" template on it, since few people are probably watching those pages. Chartway Federal Credit Union - Request for Edits

Hello! I have absolutely NO idea what I am doing on Wikipedia. Everything seems so complicated to me. At any rate, Chartway Federal Credit Union posted a page last year and now the article is being processed for deletion. The company did not know that it could not set up its own page. I was hoping that someone might see fit to edit this page from a neutral point of view. In the meantime, I have done all that I can to make it neutral, but would like for some assistance as I have an apparent conflict of interest based on the guidelines.
