Proposed merge

It is suggested that this article Winter Stadium (Montreal) be merged into CEPSUM Stadium . It is my feeling: I know very well the CEPSUM and the campus of Université de Montréal. The Winter Stadium (Montreal) probably does not merit his own article, and such content as is appropriate should probably be merged into the CEPSUM Stadium article. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Montreal Metro

In comment about the length of the Montreal Metro System,about 5 months ago, I read an article about the system which said the system length was 65. something kilometers long. Now I read that the system's length is 71 kms. Was there a recent expansion of the system and if not how does the system grow by 6 kms out of thin air. Either the earlier article I read stating the system was 65 kms long was incorrect or the fact that it is 71 kms is incorrect. Could someone clarify what is the actual true length of the Montreal Metro.

I have made it possible to add an article to the Canada and Montreal articles at once using {{WikiProject Canada |montreal=yes}}. It can be used along with other Canada projects, for example {{{{WikiProject Canada |montreal=yes |music=yes |nl=yes | class=start |importance=low}} for a band that moved from Newfoundland to Montreal. You can still use the existing {{WikiProject Montreal}} template if you want to use a unique importance rating or use the map= or photo= parameters, but in general it's useful to share the work between projects. --Arctic Gnome (talk • contribs) 03:10, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Straw poll

Hi, WikiProject Montreal. I'd like to do a straw poll to see if and how you would like to allow tagging of your articles using a merged template. The Canada template is kind of a top-level catchall template that allows all Canadian WikiProjects to be added to talk pages at once with a standardized setup.

If the option is allowed, it would let users add articles to both this project and WikiProject Canada using {{WikiProject Canada |Montreal=yes}}. This is also how articles from projects like Canada Sports and Canada Roads are done, so you would be able to add articles to multiple projects using something like {{WikiProject Canada |montreal=yes |music=yes}}.

The projects would share a class rating, but WPMontreal would have it's own importance rating using |montreal-importance=. Optionally, it could be set to default to WPCanada's importance if there is no Montreal importance and put the article into the additional category Category:Montreal articles with inherited importance. It would also show the Montreal portal on the template, though we're still looking into exactly how that would look.

My questions to you are:

1. Do you want to allow users the option of tagging WPMontreal articles using the WPCanada template?
2. If it is allowed, would you want it to default to the WPCanada importance rating when there is no Montreal importance rating (assuming that you can track which articles have inherited importance)?

• I am Opposed to WPCANADA importance ratings, since they will almost always rate any city article as "low importance" and that's just wrong. I see no advantage in using the WPCANADA banner, since it will delete the city portal from the banner linkage. This inherited importance, being usually wrong, is worse than useless (being as it would be wrong), and should not be implemented even were Montreal be flagged onto the WPCANADA template. 76.66.192.73 (talk) 04:52, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

• Sorry I just saw this. I strongly support the idea of a merged template with WikiProject Canada. I believe I raised this very question with Mtlskyline (or someone) when I first saw the WikiProject Montreal banner. It made no sense to me that Montreal's banner -- and those of other Canadian cities with their own projects -- would somehow exist independently of WikiProject Canada. • Opposed. It would make more sense to me (and be more in line with the constitution of Canada) that Montreal and other Quebec municipalities be directly tied to the Quebec Wikiproject/portal. The same goes for all other provinces : municipal government is 100% provincial jurisdiction. That the wikiprojects of the provinces (and territories) be directly tied to the Wikiproject Canada makes more sense. Nortel article marked low priority in Montreal?

Hi,

I just visited the Nortel page and found out that PKT put in a tag that Nortel is low priority in Montreal. Since I don't understand how these projects work and who makes such decisions about the rank of articles I thought I would drop by and investigate. Can someone please explain to me how it is possible that a company that used to employ many in Montrteal is now considered low-priority in Wikipedia?

I would hardly say that there is a majority opinion against the usage given that in the last discussion the two members of the project voted 1-1. I agree that the  Done template implies that it should be switched, so I'll reword that page given the lack of a replacement drive. That said, most projects that are in WP:Montreal are also relevant to WP:Canada, and should have its banner added as well. Streets, avenues, boulevards

There are numerous inconsistencies in the naming of streets, avenues, and boulevards of Montreal. I propose we fix this by following the precedents of most other toponyms in Quebec, which is also that of the first French-language city in the world just before Montreal (Paris). Regarding Paris, you can have a look here:

• Rue Saint-Denis (Paris) (Category:Streets in Paris)
• Avenue d'Iéna (Category:Avenues in Paris)
• Boulevard des Capucines (Category:Boulevards in Paris)

Following this most suited precedent, the full French name of the street, avenue or boulevard is used, but only for the article title and the infobox title. The rue particle (the only one that is different from English really) need not to be used later in the article. So this would give something like: "Rue Saint-Denis is a street located blablabla. The street is blablabla."

There's a difference here that needs to be taken under consideration. Montreal has a significant English-speaking community, which Paris does not have. If you listen to English radio stations in Montreal, they will refer to some streets with the English particle and to other with the French particle. Thus, you are more likely to hear about Sherbrooke Street, and even Park Avenue (not Avenue du Parc) So whatever name is used by Montreal's English-speaking community is the more likely search string here in the English Wikipedia, and that's what should be used as the article title. -- Blanchardb -^{Me•MyEars•MyMouth}- timed 23:40, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Paris has a sizeable minority of every major language group, including English. In my opinion, the issue is not the English-speaking minority in Montreal, but Montreal's past. Montreal was basically an English-speaking city with a lot of French speakers in it for close to a full century. The streets were once officially named in English in some parts of today's territory of Montreal. Out of habit probably, some English speakers (not all) talk of Ste Catherine Street as if it has not been called rue Ste-Catherine for the past several decades. Naturally, I am perfectly aware of this fact, but it seems to me that the younger English speakers and those who arrived in Quebec in the last 30 years, are more likely to be perfectly comfortable with acknowledging the present toponymic reality of Montreal (and Quebec) since the late 1970s, as opposed to ignoring/combating it.

The wikipedia guideline on naming convention which says that the anglicized name of places should be preferred makes sense, and as far as I can understand (by the examples given) was intended mainly for places whose official name is unintelligible to English speakers, because of its use of a non-Latin alphabet or because it cannot be read easily. Also, the convention speaks of "the name of the subject which is most common in the English language, as you would find it in reliable sources (for example other encyclopedias and reference works)." While it is certainly true that in informal conversation people will tend to say "St-Denis Street" (I've heard it), this is not the case in written sources which would be judged reliable by Wikipedia's standards. Paris is not applicable. And WP:COMMONNAME is policy, since many Montreal streets have a common English name, the French version mandated by government is often not the same. I have to agree more with the first post. While some streets in Montréal still do carry English names (albeit with 'rue' rather than 'street'), the majority are in all official sense named in French, and therefore the reality that some older citizens anglicise the names is not really relevant. Mountain Street

The following Wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_Street) should be named "Rue de la Montagne", even for its English version. It is a factual error to write "Mountain Street" since this street never had that name and was always named "Rue de la Montagne". The current article is misleading and not historically correct. The French version clearly mentions that it is a false belief to think it was named after a Mr. Mountain, while the English version is unclear in its statement about Mr. Mountain. This is inappropriate per WP:OFFICIALNAME and WP:COMMONNAME. The common name in Montreal English is "Mountain Street". At the very least, a requested move should have been filed. 65.93.15.213 (talk) 05:37, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

The move is not inappropriate or controversial. The English name of rue de la Montagne is not "Mountain Street". I have never heard this usage in Montreal or anywhere else. Mercier

Just added a new article Mercier-Ouest Moreover, I cleared up Mercier which is not an actual neighborhood in Montreal. On that point, I would like to suggest we change the info on the urban agglomeration tab. Instead of Mercier we should add two tabs, one for Mercier-Est and one for Mercier-Ouest which are actual, distinct neighborhoods. Concordia University

seems like another person had renamed Concordia University (in January), despite previous RFC and RM discussions establishing the primarity of the one in Montreal... it was moved back in March, and fixed just yesterday (contributions got messed up). Is there a Montreal Flood of 2012 article? We have one for Montreal Flood of 1987, and the Tuesday 29 May 2012 rain event was an extreme rain event and flash flood, being only the second time the Metro's been shut down due to rain, major innundations, and many floodings.

Montreal SPCA

Apparently Quadriga Art (Quadriga Art, Inc.) scammed the Montreal SPCA (actual name: Canadian SPCA), raising $13 million, but leaving a $4million debt to pay for the ad campaign, so no net monies flowed in, and the shelter building was liened on the debt. Clearing up the place names/language issue

The Gazette ran an article in July 2012 on the topic of place naming among anglophone Montrealers. Their article indicates that it is now standard to use French toponyms in Montreal itself, even by anglophones. Distances

I was thinking that an interesting idea might be to add the distance from a central, downtown location such as Central Station, much in the same way that distances from Central London are measured from Charing Cross. See the second sentence in this article as an example. I think it would give a good sense of where places are located in relation to downtown. Early use of "prairie"

The term "prairie" translates to "meadow" in English. The word "prairie" is originally French. Its use to describe western grasslands derives from its use by the French. Anglicized Street Names

I'd like to know why are the articles pertaining to street names in Montreal, are all anglicized. Even most anglophones refer to the streets by their French names. I've rarely heard anyone say Saint-Hubert Street or Berri Street, it's Rue Saint-Hubert and Rue Berri, or just Berri. Certainly among younger generations that's the norm.

If you look at articles about streets in France for example, the articles use their francophone names.

No, Montreal anglophones in Montreal use the English-form street names (anglophones from outside of Montreal who move to Montreal may use the French ones). Anglophone radio in Motnreal also uses that. Some of the oldtimers even use the old street names, from before the Quiet Revolution. Saint-Lawrence, not Saint-Laurent; St. John's not Saint-Jean in West Island; Sources Boulevard not des Sources; etc -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 17:32, 25 March 2022 (UTC)
