Categorisation of BLPs by religion and ethnicity
This is an issue that has been bugging me for a while.
Malaysian BLPs are currently sorted into a range of categories on both religion and ethnicity. For example, Category:Malaysian Muslims and Category:Malaysian Christians; and Category:Malay Malaysians and Category:Malaysian Chinese.
I think religious categorisation is entirely appropriate and common across this wikipedia's BLP article space. However, articles seem to have been included in categories, especially Category:Malaysian Muslims, based on assumptions about the BLP's religion. For example, if it is a politician is from UMNO or PAS, or a person who has a Malay name, they're thrown into Category:Malaysian Muslims. Now those kinds of assumptions are likely to be correct 99.99% of the time in Malaysia given the peculiar Constitutional circumstances but I'm concerned that in an encylopedia we should only be assigning religious identification based on reliable sources. In other words, we should only include someone in Category:Malaysian Muslims if there's a verified source that says they're a Muslim.
Ethnic categorisations trouble me a little more. There, articles seem to be categorising BLPs by making assumptions from a person's name or physical appearance. Again, I think we consider only assigning BLPs to ethnic categories if there is a verified source saying the BLP is of that ethnicity. Making assumptions about names can of course be unsafe (eg an Arab migrant could have a Muslim name and be mistaken for a Malay).

- Isn't it confusing if you think about it? There are so many categories when it come to describing Malays in Malaysia. We have Category:Malaysian Muslims, Category:Malaysian Muslims, Category:Malaysian Sunni Muslims, Category:Malaysian Islamists. Perhaps you can refer to Category:Religion in Malaysia to see where all these fit together, especially in regards to Malaysian religion categories. Now for ethnic categories, we can either do away with them or use them provided we have proper sources or references to proof their ethnicity. - Thanks, I didn't realise there was a complexity issue as well as a sourcing issue. How do we know someone is a Sunni Muslim, because we assume all Malaysian Muslims are? That's not satisfactory in my view. I'm tempted to remove all such categorisations of articles (except for those that can be sourced) and let the reader of each article make their own assumptions about the subject's race and ethnicity. --Mkativerata (talk) 18:58, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

GA Reassessment of United Malays National Organisation
I have done a GA Reassessment of the United Malays National Organisation as part of the GA Sweeps project. I have found that the article does not meet the current GA Criteria. Here is my review. This is a high level review, and the issues raised do not represent the entirety of the article. I will put the article on hold for a week pending work and notify all interested projects and editors. Democratic Action Party GA review
The article Democratic Action Party is undergoing a review as part of the good article sweeps project. The article does not seem to meet current requirements for a good article. It has been put on hold for a week; if these issues are addressed satisfactorily within that period the article will be kept as a GA, otherwise it will be delisted. August 2008 Collaboration article
A bit early, but the previous collab went on for more than 2 months:
This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.
If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. Unfree images on Bahasa Melayu Wikipedia
Recently, I've been tagging for deletion a lot of unfree images of Malaysian politicians on the English Wikipedia. The images have been generally been uploaded with erroneous claims of irreplaceability. The images have been deleted.
The problem is that on the Malay language wikipieda - [ms.wikipedia.org] - the use of unfree images for Malaysian politicians is more flagrant. Pictures are being directly lifted from the website of the Malaysian Parliament (which holds copyright in the images) with what appear to be erroenous claims of replaceability or sometimes no licensing information at all. See this and this for two examples among hundreds.
My problem is I'm not proficient enough in Bahasa Melayu to confidently report the problem on ms.wikipedia.org. I imagine that copyright violations are just as problematic for wikipedia whatever the language-wikipeda the problems are on. Is there anyone who may be able to help with reporting the problem?
Renaming of Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation to Konfrontasi
Hello wikipedians: I would like to propose a suggestion that the title Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation can be renamed to Konfrontasi without any problem. First of all, if you refer to Konfrontasi in the wikipedia, you usually mean the conflict between Malaysia and Indonesia lasting from 1963 to 1966. The use of the local term also emphasizes the local character of that conflict. If I see other titles using local terms like the German Machtergreifung (instead using the English translation seizure of power), I don't see any reason, why Malaysian terms can't be used here, too. (Konfrontasi is not the most difficult Malaysian/Indonesian word, either. ;)) And, the title wouldn't be also that bulky like Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation. No mixing up with other events, shorter title, regional character of that conflict and so on are my arguments to propose such a move. --Sukarnobhumibol (talk) 07:44, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons
The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.
Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Malaysia/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 36 articles to be referenced. The list of all other WikiProject UBLPs can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/WikiProjects.

Dewan Rakyat SVG
Hi all. I was working on a vector-based project on our country's election, specifically, about the representation of parties in the 2008 election and the changes since then. I believe creating the picture files in SVG could streamline the update procedure and standardise the appearance, since SVG files can be read and edited with a text editor. Thus, (party) colour change can be applied equally across the picture by changing the colour value, for example.
I'm not good at cartography, but what I did so far was inspired by the recent UK election chart in BBC, in which the parliamentary seats are proportionally represented as hexagons that made up roughly the shape of UK. Therefore, by referring "heavily" on this link, I created the proportional representation of parliamentary districts in Malaysia to be filled in with colour information. The pictures below are only for preview purposes, and may not represent the final upload on Wikipedia.
I welcome any questions or opinions on the pictures or related topics. Before you start, I should stress that the state seat districts are not available as of posting time. Since I'm not working full-time on these pictures, I would appreciate some help from you (to create the skeleton, etc). It is my hope that the state district map can look better than the parliamentary one, since there are more hexagons to build up the shape of Malaysia. Looking forward to your replies. - Good work. But I'd just like to remind you that proportional representation means something completely different and might confuse readers. After all, the voting system in Malaysia does not employ proportional representation as it is commonly understood. The BBC map you are referring to is here. They used the description "constituencies are equal size to show small seats in urban areas more clearly." The map you made looks great though! Yk (talk) 14:02, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. I used the term "proportional" to mean the equal representation of constituencies as Yk quoted. I have no idea about the proportional representation article, thus I should rephrase the title (and file name) of the SVGs. Suggestions on that are much appreciated.
For your information, the first SVG file should be under 100 KB after some optimizing that I'll do, while the second one is about 50 KB more. I have some reservations on the second file, because the changes doesn't look clear. I wouldn't want the second file to look exactly like the first one, meaning I just "update" the colours without showing which constituency has changed. Again, I would appreciate if anyone can provide a better way of representing this.
I'm curious about the project newsletter that Bejinhan mentioned. I looked for our cartography talk page, but found nothing inside. Please advise me on which project page I should approach regarding this topic. Of course, I don't mind staying here for a while, since there are more visitors looking around. No article?
I was suprised to find that there was no article on English Wikipedia about the Malay language version; Malay Wikipedia is just a redirect.
I noticed this bit of an attempt; I also had a look for references, but there is not much in English. I suspect there are news sources to show notability in Malay, but I can't speak it...
Wouldn't this be a nice little article to get going - and preferably >1500B so it could be a "Did you know"?

- Started the draft page here. And yes, it's difficult finding reliable sources, even in the Malay language. That would be a big problem. I can't even find the founding date of the Wikipedia, other than what was said in the Indonesian Wikipedia article. Even then, the ref was a link to the history of the Malay Wikipedia's Main Page. :( Anyone can edit the draft page, just make sure reliable sources are cited. News pertaining to Malaysia
This is an idea, since we're having a monthly newsletter and there's not much project news to fill it out, why don't we have news relating to Malaysia too? The big news, of course. Like if there's a by-election, general election, disaster, etc. Anything notable enough for a mention. If not, having a 3-point newsletter would be waste of time. A 2nd suggestion would be have it as a bi-monthly newsletter. And make the Collab of the Month bi-monthly too. Any thoughts/better suggestions? BejinhanTalk 04:25, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Recruiting users
Currently there are 21 active project members. However not all are actively participating in the project(ex. Collab of the Month) and I was thinking that maybe we could recruit users. They don't have to be Malaysians or anyone living in Malaysia. They could just be someone interested in helping improve WikiProject Malaysia(and Wikipedia). Standards of English
I noticed that there hasn't been any mention (and apologies if I missed it) of improving the atrocious standards of English present in almost all Malaysian articles. I have taken it upon myself to personally correct a couple of pages, but honestly just reading those articles was embarrassing. I suggest this be given a higher priority in revamping Malaysian wikipages. I will correct those I come across (and am open to counter-corrections, of course), but we need more active English-literate users to do this as well (it sounds like a mentally deficient llama wrote some of these).—Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.141.121.80 (talk • contribs) 03:48, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your comments and your contributions to improve the quality of pages related to Malaysia. I had to admit that this problem is quite widespread and cannot be completely eliminated due to lack of enthusiastic contributors on Malaysia wiki-pages. - Yeah, it's too bad. I want to get that tackled according to our plan page but we have a contributor problem. :p At this point of time, this project has 23 "active" members. - Unfortunately bad English is only one of a number of problems with Malaysian-related articles, after copyvios (three CCIs this year), POV-pushing and BLP violations. Proposal: Collab of the Month
As of now, there are three nominations with only one support for each. Should there be a "rule" whereby a limited amount of nominations is allowed so that instead of nominating what we want, we should also !vote for the other nominations? WikiProject Malaysia article edit drive
As I mentioned in an earlier posting here, it might be a good idea to have a competition with the purpose of drawing and encouraging editors to edit articles within this project scope. This is something that the Guild of Copy Editors is having and they have received a good response. I participated in their July drive and it was good. Barnstars were awarded to participants based on the number of articles they edited and the length of those articles. I am thinking of drafting a page based on that drive for this project. Malaysia articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Malaysia articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. Right now, we have 3 open collab nominees. All of them only received votes from their nominators. Since they're tied at 1, I guess that we can't take any of them. But that'll also mean another month without a collab. So any suggestions about a tied collab? Malay word
Hi Project Malaysia members, I wonder if anyone here is good in the Malay language or knows someone who is? At Project Gastropods some of us are trying to get the article Dog conch up to GA status. Apparently this species of sea snail is called "siput gonggong" in Malay, which seems to mean howling or barking snail. I am wondering if that basically just means "dog snail", since clearly the snail does not actually bark or howl? Any help would be much appreciated. Invertzoo (talk) 23:04, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
Hi all! I was recently in Malaysia and spoke there against censorship, and as a part of my research I read our entry Censorship in Malaysia.
One concern that I have about the entry is the list of banned movies, which is not well referenced. The list is referenced almost entirely to IMDB, but when you click on the link, the page at IMDB is blank. I suppose it used to not be blank, but it is blank now.
I am thinking that the list needs to be removed and then rebuilt with valid sourcing, and I suppose people here would have the best knowledge and resources to be able to do that.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 20:21, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Jimbo. I can't find any reliable consolidated list of banned films, although IMBD does seem to have some kind of categorisation: [1] But of course IMDB isn't reliable anyway. I agree it should be rebuilt, but it'll need to be done by ad hoc sourcing (ie individual sources for each entry, such as [2] for Schindler's list). This is probably the only way it can be done, especially because I strongly suspect Malaysia has banned many more films than are currently on the list (no value judgement there). The list would be better of as a prose account of notable examples of Malaysia banning prominent films. --Mkativerata (talk) 22:55, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
Dewan Rakyat SVG follow-up
Here's the archived discussion. I'm glad that the SVG is available now, after a week of fixing the thumbnail rendering. Of course, it's now placed in the appropriate article. I should also note that the image should not be updated to reflect changes, because it serves as a snapshot of the 2008 election results.
Another SVG image is planned for the current (and hopefully up-to-date) Dewan Rakyat representation, which might be uploaded soon. Regarding the state assembly seats, I have a test-image here. Hexagons are assembled but boundaries are not complete. In the near future, the EC might redraw the boundaries of constituencies based on the 2010 census, so that might add hexagons into some images. WikiProject cleanup listing
I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). Honorifics, titles, chief, etc.
A lot of Malaysian statesman articles are listed with their honorifics and/or titles, and the redirects don't necessarily exist. When I look for Malaysian names in en.wiki, I search for just the name, dropping tun, datu, and variants; however, I just went to clean up an article and found that most of the statesman names include the honorifics, explaining why I thought there were a lot of basic articles missing. While this may be culturally common, using honorifics and titles, it's not standard for wikipedia, and they should be removed.
And, yes, other stuff exists, the use of doctor, especially, when dealing with western MDs. And this should also be cleaned up.

- In general I agree, but we have to be a little careful here: there are some people like Tunku Abdul Rahman where the honorific title is virtually inseparable from the name and by far the most common way to refer to them, and WP:NCP makes an explicit exception for them. Probably the best way forward is to draw up a (short) "whitelist" of names that can keep their titles, and clean up the rest. Jpatokal (talk) 02:23, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
- This example is a little unfair, because this is both the affectionate vernacular name, and his given name is so common that it would make an important fundamental article with lots of hits one of en.wiki's infamous and non-navigable redirects. So, I agree not to argue for dropping Tunku on this article!
- I think, however, that most ministers of state, lower level politicians, and some other prime ministers can drop many of the honorifics and titles. I think a white list would be good. Sadly, I can probably help with very little of it, but I think it could clean-up the Malaysia articles. --Kleopatra (talk) 02:42, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

- For the individual state pages, I have no problem with either usage since a simple google search would show that the term "State Legislative Assembly" is quite commonly used especially by the local english media. However, for the main page "State Legislative Assembly of Malaysia", i think it should be renamed again to "State Legislative Assemblies of Malaysia" since the article talks about not one, but many legislative assemblies in Malaysia. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 01:00, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
