Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. Changing Hong Kong Categories to China

There are some major changes being made to the category structure of Hong Kong. User:Ksyrie is moving Category:X by country Hong Kong cats over to Category:X of the People's Republic of China. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] I looked for discussion on this, but could not find any. I'm leaving a note here because I don't know the background for these changes. just look at the article of Hong Kong,which clearly states that Hong Kong is one of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC),which cannot be considered as another country.I just changed all the categories relating the category by country.Ksyrie

I personally have no problem with that. But under this concept, you'd have to remove those Scottish ones also.

People in Hong Kong, Taiwan and China do not know the meaning of country. In my English lesson, I was taught that country is 國家. In early days, when I saw the country was associated with Hong Kong, I feel puzzled. I later found that the concept of country and 國家 are not equivalent. I really hope others can differentiate country, nation, state, sovereign state, nation-state, modern state in English, and 國 and 國家 in Chinese, not the empirical stuff taught in primary school. Your comments are indeed true. The term "Country" as defined by geographers, for instance, refers to just about any "collective society", irrespective of whether they are self-determining or not. The issue here, is that we cannot negate that fact the common usage in the world today does use terms like "country", "state", "nation", etc, interchangeably. Differentiation between these terms are important to academics in particular, and they do this to facilitate concise academic discourse. It is not in wikipedia's agenda to refuse acknoeldgement of this disparity in meanings.

This issue constantly comes to a head, because politically-charged individuals attempt to ignore distinctions between common and academic usage of words, to promote political POVs to the masses. Hence, by applying academic meanings of the word "country" to entities which would otherwise not be referred by that word in common usage, it seeks to confuse your average reader and portray acceptance of such usage, thereby advancing a certain political viewpoint. This has been a practise I have been voicing strong opposition towards, leading to a 3-year tussle which climaxes with several Arbcom cases.--Huaiwei 04:19, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

So finally Hong Kong are always classified as country?

First of all, define country. It means different things in different places. Like one would say UK is a country, not England/Scotland etc. But in fact they call themselves countries. UK is a union of countries. I'd call that a nation. A nation can be made up of several countries (in UK's situation) or just a single country with states, provinces, etc (in USA's case). In United Nations or international organisations they are treated as a single identity. But like the situation of UK is pretty rare, so the term nation and country has corrupted since and thus created much troubles.

Hong Kong is not a country nor a nation. according to HK's Basic Law it is a part of People's Republic of China. And I'm sure you know PRC is a country/nation. It is treated as a country/nation on certain levels based on it is self governing, having its own laws and regulations. So if you have to put it as a country/nation level you have to put Hong Kong, China at the very least. matt-(my page-leave me a message) 06:24, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Hong Kong is not a country, but like some other special territories (Macau, Taiwan, Gibraltar, etc.) that are not recognised as countries, it is treated as an independent entity for certain purposes (e.g. it has its own Internet domain identifier, postal administration, "national" sports teams, etc.) I think the confusion comes when, for this reason, it appears separately from China in what is called for convenience a list of countries, but which should really be called a list of "countries and territories".

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. HK wikipedians' notice board?

I joined; but I (and am sure, others) notice certain similarities between this WikiProject Hong Kong and the HK wikipedians' notice board (of which I am also a member). Is there any scope for cooperation between the two groups? E.g. the Notice Board ALREADY has a COTW (collaboration of the WEEK) -- Wikipedia:HK_wikipedians'_notice_board/HKCOTW --mintchocicecream 08:15, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

You will notice that the COTW from the HK Wikipedian's notice board is currently inactive and has been for some time. I too am also a member of the HK notice board. I stumbled upon the WikiProject Hong Kong project page a while back and found it to be quite dead in activity. As a Wikipedian from Hong Kong and for a love for Hong Kong, I sought to revive this WikiProject effort. I had revamped the project space to fall in line with other international WikiProjects. It is my hope that the HK Wikipedian's notice board will become a subset of this WikiProject - an informal discussion forum for our efforts. Over time with the help of other interested editors, I (as I'm sure others do as well) hope to introduce all the workings of a full WikiProject. It has also been noted that the notice board does not serve the same function as a WikiProject. Notice boards have traditionally been used for informal discussions. So far it looks like most of the votes are for keeping it. Do you know of any specific WP rules on the notability of places and/or roads? I've argued that it is notable for being the location of the first Magistracy in HK and that it is a popular tourism site. And it is mentioned by the HK Tourism Board, so I would think that is enough unless there is some specific WP rules on the notability of places that contradict that assertion. Thanks so much for your quick response. The request to delete is absurd, of course. It seems to me that if there's not a rule against proposing an AfD for an article that's already been "claimed" by a project (i.e., there's a template on the article's discussion page stating it is a part of this project), there ought to be. Expansion of a small article is always great. But that an article is small is not criteria for deletion. Assuming that the subject of the article is indeed notable, the small size of an article calls for expansion, not deletion. Having said that, as far as your average HK person is concerned, I'm not sure he would know more about this road than what's been already mentioned in the article, without actual further study, that is. Some of the HK editors might have access to books and such that might have more information, but otherwise, I think most editors, including HK editors, would basically be doing what you yourself would do to expand the article - google for information.  :-) Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 01:29, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Not sure if there is enough information out there for these two topics, but I added two article requests - Stanley concentration camp, and Gurkha Brigades in Hong Kong. The first was a concentration camp that the Japanese occupying forces set up in Stanley during World War 2. Well, I think there's already a link in the box, it's just that an assessment page has not yet been created for WPHK. I imagine it should be pretty similar to the assessment page for WPChina. Anyone can create the page, so some help would be much appreciated.

Criteria for rating importance

I did some more copy-editing and correction to the Assessment page. I noticed that other WikiProjects have specific criteria for rating their articles for specific importance ratings. Take a look at WP China or WP Cities, for example. We need to come up with these criteria ourselves. Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Hong Kong/Assessment#Importance scale. Some articles have already been rated for importance, but I'm not sure what criteria was used. Maybe they were just rated according to how other WikiProjects have rated them. Anybody have any suggestions? I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of the scale of global recognition and domestic prominence of the subject matter. Something that is recognised globally and highly prominent locally, that would be a Top importance article. For instance, Hong Kong, Jackie Chan, etc etc. Then we go down the scale to, maybe, international recognition in various parts of Asia, but not necessarily outside of Asia. So on and so forth. That seems like a pretty logical method of organizing them. However, I would see how it can get subjective and relative as not every Wikipedia editor will have the same exposure to Hong Kong and Hong Kong-related articles/subjects. Perhaps we could consider:

• • Top: Overall reaching Hong Kong related articles (such as Hong Kong, Geography of Hong Kong, Economy of Hong Kong, Hongkonger, etc.)
  • High: International and local historical events associated to Hong Kong. International organizations (Cathay Pacific, Peninsula Hotel, etc.)
  • Mid: Actors, actresses, transportation hubs (HKG), harbour ports, Octopus Card, etc.)
  • Low: Generally those meeting local notability guidelines. Local in interest and notability yet little known outside in the international community. Hong Kong roads, MTR stations, etc.

I like your suggestions. Now that I'm re-thinking about it, I don't think even a celebrity like Jackie Chan ought to have top importance. That rating should go to articles that are about HK overall. And I also think that HK celebrities that are not well-known outside of HK should probably get Low importance. But how about articles for neighborhoods/areas of HK? Should an article like the one for Central get Mid importance, if Low importance is reserved for specific roads and MTR stations? Arguably articles for areas and districts are more important than articles for roads and MTR stations. And how about the articles for specifically Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, and New Territories? I've suggested that all actors, actresses, and celebrities (like Jackie Chan and alike) be rated as Mid importance only. I have to disagree with you though on "HK celebrities that are not well-known outside of HK should probably get Low importance." My rationale here is that Hong Kong as a territory and cultural influence almost always far exceeds its recognized territorial boundaries. Almost always after solidfying their foot-hold in Hong Kong, Hong Kong actors, actresses, singers, and celebrities almost always go after the Mandarin speaking market via Mainland China - which in effect would place them in Mid importance.

I suggest that neighbourhoods and areas in Hong Kong (such as Lan Kwai Fong, Kowloon, Shau Kei Wan, Central, etc.) be given Mid importance only. Whereas Hong Kong roads and MTR Stations (such as Hollywood Road, Arbuthnot Road, Central (MTR) etc.) be given Low importance because of their relatively low notability as per WP:LOCAL.

On the issue of over-arching Hong Kong area articles such as Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, New Territories, Lantau Island, I am inclined to give them Top importance because of their over-arching physical scope. This would differ from the Hong Kong areas and neighbourhoods since those are mainly created for administrative purposes and are not physical like Hong Kong Island, Lantau Island, etc. Luke! 18:54, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Category:Districts of Hong Kong

I have a question about Category:Districts of Hong Kong. Currently all the districts are actually listed in subcategories in that category. For example, Category:Wan Chai District is listed in that category, and in return, the article Wan Chai District is listed in Category:Wan Chai District. My question is, should we also list all the district articles themselves in Category:Districts of Hong Kong, or should we just use the subcategories? I think it would be best if we list all district articles (Wan Chai District) in both the district category (Category:Wan Chai District) and the overall district (Category:Districts of Hong Kong). Does anyone else have any other rationale? Luke! 04:13, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Whip Octopus Card article back into FA status?
