Improving the Devon and Cornwall County Division edit

Hello, I am currently working to upgrade the Devon and Cornwall County Division article. While I have the information to explain what such a division was, its background and how it ended, I have little information is either freely available (or easily accessible for me) to help expand what the division actually did during its brief existence (1941). I have been able to utilize a few sources to provide some examples, however a little more information would go a long way to helping to produce a more detailed article. I have identified the following sources that provide information, however brief, on the subject. If anyone is able to access these sources, can you either provide me with scans of the relevant pages so I can further update the article or edits yourself with the information at hand?

  • The History of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, 1939-45, Ernest Gordon Godfrey, Robert Frederick Kinglake Goldsmith; Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry (Regimental History Committee), 1966

The above source on p. 30 (and beyond) details the 6th Battalion, who were assigned to this division.

  • The History of the Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's), 1919-1945; George Noble Molesworth, Regimental Committee, Somerset Light Infantry, 1951

The 9th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry were assigned to the division. From Google's snippet view, I was unable to locate any precise pages (possibly p. 72) on the battalion but was able to infer that the book is split up into years and battalions, with the implication there could be some detail that could help flesh out the article.

  • The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry Chronicle: The Record of the ... Battalions in the Second German War, Volume 2; James Edmund Henderson Neville; Gale and Polden, 1950 - World War, 1939-1945

While the Ox and Bucks were not part of the division, p.127 makes it very clear that one of their battalions aided the training of the new recruits of the Devon and Cornwall division. There is not enough info on snippet view to gain complete context, or find out exactly what the battalion was doing to help the division. Additional mentions, in the same state, are located on at least pp. 137 and 175, with snippet view hinting at another possible page that it does not show. Again, any access to this would help to create a more clear and detailed account of the division.

Very kind regards, EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 00:34, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • EnigmaMcmxc, Resource Exchange does not normally handle books, so I'm afraid this is a non-starter. I suggest you perhaps obtain the books from BookFinder.com, which has the very cheapest prices and has most any book. The trick is to put the least amount of information into the search field: no subtitles, no opening article ("a", "the"), no author name (or at the most last name only). Good luck! Outline for a legislative program to rebuild our cities -- pamphlet by Urban Land Institute edit

http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/43557846 for Urban Land Institute and a translation into German

it only has 8 pages. Thank you, Doc Taxon (talk) 20:22, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Since it's only 8 pages but is only held in three libraries, you might want to utilize Artrieve.com. It is a pay-service, but if the item is a must-have, it may be worth it. Softlavender (talk) 07:17, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Softlavender: Thanks for forwarding to Artrieve, but they reply, that they do not cooperate with these libraries. So I am looking for a local Wikipedian who can help to get this resource. Thank you, Doc Taxon (talk) 13:05, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Doc Taxon: New thought: You might want to change your header (which I tweaked just previously but still isn't going to work) to read: 8-page item held only in NYC, USC, Harvard libraries, so it will get the attention of Wikipedians in those locations. -- Softlavender (talk) 22:54, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Doc Taxon: I'm passing through this page and I noticed only held in NYC in the above comment and seeing as I live in NYC... I've never used the NYPL before, but if there's no one else who can more easily make the trip, I can certainly make the trip down to Fifth Avenue (that seems to be where it is) to see if I could figure out how to get a look at it for you. It may take a decent while, though. ~Cheers, TenTonParasol 22:24, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@TenTonParasol: Good luck! I will be waiting patiently ... Doc Taxon (talk) 17:11, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Doc Taxon, although TenTonParasol's offer is very kind, it seems quite slow and tenuous. I believe EEng (or someone he knows) could get a scan of the 8-page pamphlet for you from Harvard much quicker. Softlavender (talk) 00:51, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Edited to add: I also notice up at the top of this page in the green-collapsed list of "Direct contact" volunteers that GabrielF will scan items from the Harvard libraries. He seems to be relatively inactive on Wikipedia at present, so you'd need to email him with the request. Softlavender (talk) 01:08, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately I'm away through August, so I'm pinging the tireless FourViolas. (4V, since it's only 8 pages I'd forgive you for using Scan&Deliver, Hollis# 3679757.) EEng 01:28, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

3D World magazine #77 (May 2006) - Movers and Shakers edit

{{resolved}} I'm working on Fish Heads Fugue and Other Tales for Twilight and have discovered, via this archived webpage [3], that an interview with the film's directors was printed in the above-specified magazine. Unfortunately, the actual interview doesn't appear to be online (at least, as far as I can tell). The publisher's official website only offers back issues from a few months ago, although it states that more can be found at the Apple Newsstand, the Google Newsstand, and Zinio. I'm currently stuck using a computer without i-tunes, so I can't confirm how many back issues are offered at the Apple Newsstand, but it looks like the Google Newsstand only goes back to 2013 and that Zinio only goes back to 2011. I've checked ebay, amazon, and abebooks, but so far, no luck. And HighBeam doesn't appear to have any articles by this publisher. Any other ideas? --Jpcase (talk) 15:50, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Per this site [4], it might be possible to access the interview if one had a subscription to the magazine at the time (so 2006). But it's possible that even this only goes back a few years. Anyone here actually have a subscription to this magazine and able to confirm on how it works? --Jpcase (talk) 15:19, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Worldcat shows 44 libraries hold physical copies of OCLC 51642394 (click Show libraries holding just this edition). Searches by ISSN or title return different lists of libraries. See if one near you holds the issue you want. If not, search the individual catalogs of the 44 libraries to narrow down the list (most holdings probably don't go back to 2006), then refine your resource request (i.e. "Assistance needed from Wikipedians who have access to the British Library, or Fashion Institute of Technology (Manhattan), or University of North Texas Library, or ...) --Worldbruce (talk) 16:46, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Worldbruce: Thanks for the advice! I'm still a bit of a novice at using WorldCat though, and don't understand exactly what the OCLC # is. I can see that there are five different "editions" of 3D World magazine listed on WorldCat, but don't know what the differences are between these - except that this one [5] is apparently digitized. Why should I only view the results for OCLC 51642394? --Jpcase (talk) 17:25, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If you wish to be thorough, examine all results by all search terms. My educated guess is that OCLC 51642394 will be your best bet. I know there are volunteers who monitor these requests and have access to the Britich Library, or who live in New York City. For all I know, you live around the corner from the National Library of Sweden, in which case OCLC 924716736 might be more useful, but I'm playing the odds. I doubt if the eJournal edition (OCLC 570375653) will be of any help. From looking at a sampling of the 141 libraries that have it, their access is through ProQuest Career and Technical Education, and only started with the March 2016 issue. --Worldbruce (talk) 18:08, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Worldbruce: Many of the libraries don't seem to specify which issues they have (some of them, when selected, won't even display information about the magazine at all). Still, several of the libraries appear to have issue #77, supposing that I'm understanding their catalogs correctly. None of them are near me, so I'll do as you suggested and open another resource request, along the lines that you described. Thanks for the help! --Jpcase (talk) 14:16, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking assistance from Wikipedians who have access to one of these libraries (3D World magazine) edit

{{resolved}} As outlined in my previous request, two sections above, I'm searching for 3D World magazine, issue #77 (May 2006), primarily for use in the article Fish Heads Fugue and Other Tales for Twilight (although, this source would also contain some information on another film that I'm currently creating an article for in my sandbox, called Le Building). The publisher no longer sells back issues from this long ago; meanwhile, no online retailers seem to be currently selling copies of this particular issue. But there appear to be several university libraries that carry it - unfortunately, none near me. Can anyone with access to one of these libraries help me out?

This may not be a complete list (some of the library websites were hard to figure out), but I believe that all of these libraries have #77:

  • If this New Yorker page has an article or review on Tokyo File, then it might be useful. If that's merely an advertisement then I don't think its necessary. Thanks, --Skr15081997 (talk) 06:22, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Skr15081997, the New Yorker page is just a movie listing, so of no interest unless you need documentation that it played in New York City. John M Baker (talk) 15:25, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Then its of no use. There are a lot of sources for its playing in NYC at http://nyshistoricnewspapers.org. Thanks for checking it out. --Skr15081997 (talk) 09:51, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

GoogleBooks download edit

{{Resolved}} Grateful if a USian would take a look at https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Labour_life_and_literature_some_memories.html?id=4wEPAAAAQAAJ and if a PDF is available, snag it and get it to me, e.g. by email or dropbox or skype. The book is out of copyright (1913 publication, 1915 author death) but unavailable to UK users. (And maybe there's no PDF for US users, who knows?) thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:19, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

GoogleBook entries never have PDFs, but you can purchase the book for less than £3 including p/p, so I'd suggest that: [9], [10]. -- Softlavender (talk) 01:01, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're wrong, Softie. PD works on Gbooks usually have a red Ebook - Free link allowing download in pdf and other fmts, though you have to sign in. See [11]. EEng 16:58, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • EEng#s I know how to get around those, but it may take a little bit. The main thing you need to know is the copyright laws for the country it was published in, and you can research it on the wiki by reading the page on Copyright laws in "country". What you need to do is go onto the Google Books page, and search text in the bar below the image, the "snippet view" thing; then hit "Wheres the rest of this book". There should be a Boldface word saying Copyrighted, and then a bulletpoint of "ask us to review it". Now, you are taken to a new email, where you simply type out your case to Google Books on why the book is out of copyright, and then they add the full view online. I have done this twice, and both times I was correct in my argument and Google Books released the full view. If you need help, respond on my talk page and I can go through it better, or I can do it for you if you provide me with the information about the book (country, date, author etc). IJReid discuss 01:01, 1 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That's very useful. How long have you found it takes for Google to act on your request? EEng 02:45, 1 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks. I've been using Gbooks for a decade and didn't know about this copyright-review process. Where on WP can we explain about this so that more Wikipedians will know about it? It might be something The Signpost could talk about briefly. EEng 20:58, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Bloody hell. You are no less than a freakin' copper-bottomed certified genius of the first water, IJReid. I'm completely and utterly gobsmacked. And very very grateful to you. Australian metrication edit

I am seeing a useful snippet [14] on page 130 of Metrication, the Australian Experience: Proceedings of the North American-Australian Metric Conference that would help improve Australian standard pallet. The complete paper would be good, but if not, just the full citation so I can cite the snippet properly. --SpinningSpark 22:46, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Spinningspark: Here is a link to a list of libraries that have copies of the proceedings.
From the table of contents, p 27 is the start to "Metric Conversion and Standardisation by Mr W l Stewart" -- perhaps the appropriate article? That seems confirmed by a citation "
Stewart, W. I., (1975), Metric Conversion and Standardisation, , Proceedings of the North American - Australian Metric Conference - "Metrication : The Australian Experience"., pp. 27 - 33." in Dr Lloyd J Pilgrim (1999) Metrication: A job to complete?, Australian Surveyor, 44:1, 11-19, DOI: 10.1080/00050326.1999.10441898 To link to this article: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/00050326.1999.10441898.
Completely besides the point, I ran into a listing of the Metric Conversion Board Archive, beautiful stuff here (especially look at the descriptions of posters) if there's an article on metric conversion in Australia.Jodi.a.schneider (talk) 21:49, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Spinningspark, is this resolved adequately? If so, please mark with the {{tl|resolved}} template. If not, please clarify what you still need. Softlavender (talk) 09:44, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • Sorry for the late reply, this got archived very quickly after that message and I didn't get a chance to see it so I am reposting the thread. The gbooks snippet says the page I am looking at is p. 130, so it does not seem likely that the article I want is on pp. 27-23. The only way to tell for sure is to see a copy of the article, but what article is on page 130? It is quite likely the paper contains more information that can be used for expansion so a copy would have value beyond just getting the citation right. SpinningSpark 15:59, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I believe the paper you need is: Acton, A. P. (1975). "Packaging and Packaged Goods". Metrication, the Australian experience. North American-Australian Metric Conference. Sydney: Metric Conversion Board. pp. 127–140.. Chances of getting a copy of the page or paper here are slim, however, since the previous six-month posting and a request for assistance cross-posted on Wikipedia:Australian Wikipedians' notice board (most of the holdings are in Australia) were both unsuccessful. --Worldbruce (talk) 19:28, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, now I know the name of the article I can confirm[15] that that is what I am looking at in gbooks. At least it can now be cited properly in the article. SpinningSpark 19:37, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Needing two sources from Newslibrary.com for article on animated short film edit

{{Resolved}}

I've been working on the article Fish Heads Fugue and Other Tales for Twilight, about a student thesis film made at Rhode Island School of Design. NewsLibrary appears to have two sources for the film: "Sublime and ridiculous intermingle in RISD student film festival" (Providence Journal, May 15, 2005) and "New name ... bigger game" (Standard-Examiner, March 25, 2006). For some reason, NewsLibrary has four different iterations of the second source, all published by the same newspaper and on the same date. If for whatever reason, there actually happen to be any differences between these, then I suppose that all four iterations could be of use to me. Otherwise, I just need the two sources. A subscription to NewsLibrary is required to access them. --Jpcase (talk) 23:30, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
