Template:Irish nationalism edit

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more templates or modules. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the template's talk page or in a deletion review).

The result of the discussion was no consensus. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:04, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hijacked version of Template:Irish republicanism, so effectively double. Please salt after deletion. The Banner talk 13:52, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - Not at all. I initially went to broaden a separate template, {{Irish republicanism}} to include all the major nationalist parties, which was reverted; I've since gone to discuss this with the editor that made the revert.
Since then, I've created a separate template, {{Irish nationalism}}. I've already tried to explain that there is no reference in the republic template for example to e.g Fine Gael and the SDLP which are two major nationalist parties on the island of Ireland (reverted when I tried to add).
The republican template seems to be more focused on militant republicanism as opposed to nationalism in general. I'm open to discussions of course. Titus Gold (talk) 14:43, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You only started the discussion after being reverted twice and the template being nominated for deletion. But seeing your discussion, you miss the differences between Irish republicanism and Irish nationalism. The Banner talk 14:57, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep There is intersection between Irish republicanism and nationalism, but these are still different topics. One is a sidebar and the nominated template is a navbox. The first edit that I can see was the template was redirected to the sidebar to revert a vandal page move. This is a work in progress following the added material. I would argue possibly moving this into draft space so that whoever wants to work on this can and by the time all related links to articles about this topic are added and see if it warrants a navbox meeting the criteria of template policy but also if it merits navigating on articles related to the topic at hand. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 03:03, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: If Titus Gold would like to create an "Irish Nationalism" Navbox wholly separate to Template:Irish republicanism, I don't have a problem in principle with that, although I would encourage Titus Gold to become more familiar with the nuances of the topic of Irish Nationalism before creating said Navbox. I think Titus might be keen to fit Irish Nationalism into a uniform template of "Celtic Nationalism", but Irish Nationalism has many complexities that may fly over the head of those not intimate with it. For example, the difference between "Irish Nationalism" and "Irish Republicanism" is not simply degrees of militancy, it's a whole ideological difference of some significant within Irish politics, of which much academic work covers and explores.
WikiCleanerMan's suggestion of creating a draft before going live may be a good one. CeltBrowne (talk) 04:09, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The template in its current form was only reverted once but in hindsight, I appreciate @The Banner that I could've discussed at a talk page rather than explained in the edit description initially. I'm open to suggestions on how the templates should differ.
@WikiCleanerMan yes, you're right that there are significant overlaps between Irish nationalism and republicanism. Perhaps both templates should have more clearly defined criteria?
@CeltBrowne - you make a good point here in the differences between the nationalism of these nations. I am very familiar with Irish nationalism and how it has differed historically (and continues to be different) to e.g Welsh nationalism and agree that these differences need to be reflected in the template. Open to suggestions on that. Titus Gold (talk) 17:20, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you have missed that there was also a template move that has been reverted. The Banner talk 16:22, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Appreciate linking that. I simply removed the redirect and created an entirely separate template on Irish nationalism. CelticBrowne seemed to disagree with the changing of the republican template rather than the creation of the Irish nationalism template. Thanks Titus Gold (talk) 01:24, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unused insignia templates. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 21:34, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep for now: I created these, as the generic NATO country rank templates automatically created from the comparative template (see eg. Officer ranks) don't exactly fit the Finnish rank system in its actual usage (the source for the comparison is incomplete, slightly erroneous and has been supplemented by unsourced material and a proper STANAG 2116 revision including the Finnish ranks for a proper conversion has not yet been given out) - these are effectively a templated mirror of table on the page for the Finnish military ranks. While the aforementioned page uses the table itself for better editability, these are the only linkable template which have the correct division to general, senior and junior officers, omitting the incorrect OF(D) and officer student references (the Finnish Officer Cadet is an OF-1 rank, the Officer Candidate an OR-5 and Officer Student an OR-4 service rank); as well as the correct division to NCO and enlisted as well as omitting the actually nonexistent rank of Recruit. Until the correct conversion from the upcoming STANAG 2116 revision is available, the NATO template is incorrect and these templates created by me are more correct; the reason why I daredn't edit the NATO template is that it reflects the (however incorrect) sole source. XoravaX (talk) 15:47, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
XoravaX, am I reading your argument correctly that we shouldn't delete these templates because the other templates are wrong, but we can't change them, and we can't replace them with these templates? Primefac (talk) 13:29, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Probably too controversial to have for a sidebar or any other template format. All entries under the "Historical ethnostates" sections are just links to sections on the White ethnostate article which none have existed as they were attempts to do so but never came to be. Everything else is proposed states and just links to hate groups. Don't see the navigational benefit even when most of direct links to articles are already covered by other templates. • Delete. No transclusions. Many of the piped links are on the same topic (or even the same page) and do not match the visible text. It includes Southern United States as an ethnostate. All of the links amount to the kind on controversial statement that would need a citation. Putting "New Zealand" on the "Ethnostates" sidebar implies "New Zealand is/was an ethnostate." Per WP:WHYCITE, every link (maybe except Rhodesia) needs a citation. This doesn't work as a navigation sidebar for many reasons. Rjjiii (talk) 03:22, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
