  • Weak oppose parents are usually higher than children, so experienced editors are higher than novices? Kayau Voting IS evil 14:27, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
    • Where did the idea of parents come from? By children here I am referring to the fact that they are learning quickly about the world, somewhat more new to it, more optimistic and creative, more open to ideas. And thus, if we help them settle in, they will help change Wikipedia with their new ideas. It is true that it is sometimes necessary to "talk down" to children to explain things to them, but I don't feel that that makes us "higher", per se. (I actually think people patronise children too much, and I guess the same goes for newbies.) sonia♫♪ 19:33, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

    • OK, since my points were addressed, I guess I withdraw my second. I still don't like Wikipedia=America, even if it means new world. Kayau Voting IS evil 14:42, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Comment: The word "America" derives from the feminized Latin version of the first name of the Italian explorer and navigator Amerigo Vespucci (Amerigo→Americus→America.) America is also a synonym of "New World," "New Continent" (North America + South America = the Americas) "new Land" ... something new. Obviously I know the phrase is referring to the U.S.A., but I took the liberty to "extend" its meaning. This word (America, América, Amerika, Amérique) and meaning are in common use in many languages as well as in English. America here means the new world/thing, which surely is Wikipedia. Also, a link to Google or Yahoo! would make the idea more clear for linking "Turn left at Greenland," but I used WP:AWARE because I don't think it is a good idea to point to the Wikipedia main namespace. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 10:53, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose - I don't like the linking because I think WP:AWARE is a bad page to link to, its just full of statistics and isn't that relevant anyway. I would probably have Weak support if Turn left at Greenland linked to Google or Yahoo as Pjoef suggested - I don't think it's such a big deal to link to a normal article. • Support (both versions, there is not a big difference between them) + comment: I think that the Poet of Piano was not paid for his Étude Op. 10, No. 12. La Pianista, check out this link when you get a moment. I would like to know your opinion. It's not Richter, Ashkenazy, or Pollini... but he is studying this Revolutionary piece of Art, and IMHO he is making progress. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 07:49, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
      • Re Pjoef Yes, he's making progress (is that perchance you playing? :). It's better than many others' renditions I've heard - believe me, I've heard many. Sure, there are more than a few things I disagree with, in which I will indulge myself by speaking in uncomfortably large detail.
        • Better right hand legato - he has the hand for a 5-4 octave pair if he wanted to. He should relax the lower voices in practice and work on that legato between 5 and 4. It is supremely important to keep the other fingers relaxed, else the legato will not be natural, he'll hit wrong notes, and some notes won't even sound. Purely as an exercise, he could play the chord, play every voice but the top staccato, and keep the top molto legatissimo.
        • More voicing in top of right hand - he can do this by subtly angling his hand towards the smaller fingers, thus putting more weight there.
        • More carefully-planned resolutions - 0:40, for example. The D should be softer than the E-flat before it. If you were to sing this passage, you wouldn't do the opposite, would you? It is ungraceful (not that he was doing that - he was playing them at equal dynamics).
        • Better tone control by keeping the hand close to the key - this mostly applies to the right hand. If he put his hand on the key before playing it, he wouldn't have that wooden, physical bump that comes purely from a quick descent straight into the keybed. It's that "knock-on-wood" sound that's barely perceptible but makes a huge difference in the end. In addition, a lot of energy is wasted in the force that is rebound, per Newton's third law. If he kept close to the key, he could play loudly with a quick burst of energy and immediately relax (after all, what use is there for tension after a key is played? The sound decays immediately, there's nothing you can do) and prepare for the next chord.
        • Reduce the amount of extraneous movement in the left hand, especially the chromatic 1:07 section- it's good to keep the arm free, but too much movement is more of an impediment than a help. It throws the hand off balance and creates more tension as the pianist tries to keep things straight. Like Dr. José Feghali once mentioned in a masterclass I attended, capable pianists don't have to convince themselves of relaxation with unnecessary movements. Freedom should be felt within and observed through paying close attention to what their body is telling them. Of course, total relaxation is impossible (else, pianists would be reduced to a drooling, half-awake mess that has fallen off the bench), but we should strive for minimal tension at all costs.
        • Most minor thing of all - I would recommend not letting go of the right hand during the left hand "solo" passagework. For one thing, it is slightly unprofessional, and his body language shows that he is struggling. Inner dialogue: I'm so focused on this left hand right now. In the meanwhile, let's get this right hand out of the way.
      • Overall, relatively small things, besides that bit about relaxation - as you say, he is no Richter. If this etude has caused him any pain - even a tingly sensation in undesirable - I would strongly advise him to be careful and start some relaxation exercises, which he may find in Alan Fraser's book, The Craft of Piano Playing (which I cannot link to on WP, since it would be spamming :P ). —La Pianista 06:42, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Never fight a battle of wits with someone you suspect is unarmed.

This originated from a British Adult "comic" called Viz - it was used in an episode of "Sid the Sexist", when he was talking to Baz about dealing with blondes. However, I feel it fits Wikipedia in the sense of Not biting the newcomers and Assuming good faith - always assume the person you are dealing with may need things explaining, politely. Personal warnings are much friendlier, since if they're kept civil, they can encourage conversation and discussion. In short, don't assume you're talking with someone who knows everything, it's highly unlikely. BarkingFish Talk to me | My contributions 23:40, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

And the heart's secret was at once confessed

    • Since when did being rich kill people? He's saying that , when he is gone and all his actions are what are left to judge him by, he'd rather not be known as the richest man but the one who did the most for others. The same applies here; when we leave Wikipedia for whatever reason, I'm sure we would rather be remembered for (helping newbies/writing stellar FAs/being a good mediator) than solely for having one billion edits. {{Sonia|ping|enlist}} 07:02, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

  • Very-Very Weak Support because I do not like the last link. There are a lot more editors than vandals. Also, "single poet" is in the singular form. What about using Wikipedia:Long-term abuse (shortcut: WP:LTA) or Wikipedia:Most vandalized pages (shortcut: WP:MVP) for the last link? –pjoef (talkcontribs) 10:48, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
There are a lot more editors than vandals, but whenever I go out vandal hunting, it seems to me like there are far more vandals than editors; we just have the advantage of vandal-fighting tools. And yes, it is singular, but I was thinking of it as a ratio, which I would think still works. ~~ Hi878 (Come yell at me!) 05:30, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
